ummm straight outta cherbourg anyway;) those northern french port towns tend to be horrible imo(calais, le harve)

ive done it twice with the family, first we went down through brittany, and eventually we went as far as La Rochelle

second time we went inland and went as far south as lyon.

I presume it's your first time, or you wouldn't be asking.

With a week, I'd head for Brittany. There are many attractive destinations that you can easily reach in a week. I list the first few that come to mind, but on another day I might come up with quite a different list.

    North:
    - Mont St. Michel (pretty well required)
    - St Malo
    - Dinan
    - The coast generally for scenery, beaches

    Inland:
    - Rennes
    - Fougères
    - Vitré

    South:
    - Concarneau
    - Quimper
    - Carnac
    - More beaches

Get a map and plot a route to hit a few of them. Driving in Brittany is generally easy: good roads, traffic not too heavy. In May, you should not need to book hotels ahead unless you plan to stop in Rennes.
