Canon 1D firmware updates

Canon has released firmware updates for the 1D MkIII and 1Ds MkIII cameras.

Available from Canon website.

Also, Canon has produced some further updates/information about the 1D MkIII AF system here.

Does everyone update their firmware as soon as it comes out, even if the camera is ok??, Is there any risks envolved ??

I always update mine.

Firmware updates are designed to fix problems. Of course, you can always re-install a previous version if a fault is found.

In general, it is fairly safe and simple procedure, as long as you have a full battery.

Are you sure you can go back, I always thought firmware were always an upward movement?

it usually is for most electronic devices, but considering i've never dealt with firmware with DSLR's before, i shall pass a bucket of salt with that.

From my experience in the world of IT, you should carefully check out the 'read me' document before upgrading the firmware, often the upgrade will fix a problem that doesn't or probably won't affect you.

Unless the documentation highlights an issue that directly affects you, you're better off leaving a period of time to elapse before you apply the upgrade.

The principle is this: If there's a problem with the new level of firmware, let other people find it first - caveat emptor!

Some companies have the ability to allow you to reinstall previous updates/versions so not necessary only upwards.
