Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Burren Mount Hotel, Salthill

Does anybody know anything about this place? I always remember it being there back when we used to collect my older brother from school in St. Enda's. I always get an eerie feeling every time I pass the place.
Has anyone ever been inside it?
This has been a fact-finding mission for me for gawd-knows how long!

    Mod note:
I've been approached by friends of the owners.
The hotel may or may not reopen at some point.
The owners DO NOT want anyone knocking asking for a tour or a look inside.
Feel free to discuss the hotel, memories of it and Salthilll etc but the hotel is to be considered a private residence from this point on and I ask you to not disturb the people living there.

Doubt that place has changed much since the 70's, those manky net curtains have probably been there since it opened. Biggest eyesore in Salthill, and that's an achievement. It does look really spooky though, like somewhere a serial killer would live.

Well, I'm fairly certain it's closed anyway.

I can remember going to the "Club" there, a long long time ago. Everytime I walk past, I wonder what's happening in there. but, if you walk by in the dark, you will notice that the lights and TV are on in the lobby ! ! ! Spooky !

Just for the peeps that don't know the ugliest hotel in Galway.
It kinda has a Soviet 1970s "charm".

You can actually see inside the rooms from certain angles, they remind me of the photos you see of houses in Chernobyl. Kinda eerie. Saw a bloke going in the back door a few weeks ago when I was down at the podiatry clinic by the side of it.

One day I'm going to have a pint in there. I don't care if it has a bar or not, I'm having a pint.

As an aside, in a few years time will this really be any less architecturally offensive than most of the other ****e that's sprung up about town in the last years?

I actually think its really cool.

It should be done up and turned into a retro hotel or club or something, serving classic seventies cocktails and disco.

Like the hotel at the far end of the prom. Can't remember the name of it at the moment but it totally captures a moment in time as well. Was in it once for a quick drink a while back and all it reminded me of was the hotel from the Shining.

My grandparents were interested in buying the property years (more than 30) ago for development, but the owner wasn't interested. That place must be worth a good few quid.

    Great location for a bar.

Ha! walking the prom the last day and said it must be a brothal or some it - seedy looking place!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,790 ✭✭✭cornbb

I think there was a long thread about this place a while back.

Agree that its eerie, spooky etc. But in 20 years I bet that sort of thing will be considered retro and stylish again and the place will be considered an architectural gem. And Galway/Salthill will be full of Celtic Tiger-era eyesores. E.g. The Bal in Salthill, most of Knocknacarra, etc... :pac:

I'd love to take a look inside. It's actually a pretty huge building if you walk down the alley between Burren Mount / Baily Point you'll see

Ahhh the auld Burren Mount, Pints+Curry & a few slaps off some lad, entertainment at its best in the 70's...Some spot back then, made the Castle look up market :D

The face of the building looks like it's about to fall off.

It is a big eyesore in my opinion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 315 ✭✭galvianlord

i think it is quite an attractive building in its own right, of its time etc If we were in the UK the 20th Century Society would be smacking listed status on it straight away! Something retro about it alright, shames its in such poor nick. Remember when it was common enough to get a room in there after the warwick if ya had scored, couldnt go home and the rain was heading perpendicularly into the shelters on the prom...

    Sounds good!

Someone on page one said they saw a guy going in a side door. I did too. I wonder if some of the building is apartments?

As for the lights and TV on in the lobby, I've never seen that. I just walked past it at night last summer and saw nothing of the sort.

Can anyone confirm if it's open or closed??

I steer clear of the place! It kinda creeps me out, often wondered about it though! Prime location for .... well anything really. Nice Restaurant maybe!?

I reckon you confused the above with my post about the RIO in Lower Salthill.

Ohhhh, you were on about The RIO!

That place doesn't look overwhelmingly bad. It seems to be somewhat well kept compared to Burren Mount.

Went past last night dead slow (much to the annoyance of Mr.Passat behind Sorry) and nowt was happening. Totally dark... But eerie all the same. Bound to be cold as well with them big windows ...!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

I had forgotten about The Rio. While the Burren Mount is creepy, The Rio is just plain greasy. Gotta love the giant mirror and sexy yellow mood lighting at the front counter. Would love to see inside the rooms, they probably have shag pile carpets, stained velvet sheets and some nice 9 carat gold fixtures, greasy!

Sounds like an awesome place for middle aged adultery.

Why am I reminded of the video for Suede's "Animal Nitrate"?

They guy who owns burren mount, he inherited it off his parents, its his car thats under covers beside the hotel. Story is when bailey point was being built the developers were trying to buy a bit of land of him to the rear of the building. He refused to sell and got really pissed off at the bailey point development. He set up cameras pointing into the sky and threatened to sue the developers if cranes came over his building. When they were resurfacing the road beside the burren mount he was asked to move his car so they could get on with the job. He refused so the lads raised the level of the road and now his car is stuck forever in the lane way.

Think you're on about the Eglinton. Just further up the road, past Kilorans and Lonergans.
