Anyone try the Asus N10J - 10.2" with Atom N270 processor?

    Seems a decent spec.
The Asus N10J is a bit bigger than what I would consider a netbook and as the price is approximately €500, it's nowhere near as tempting, especially since you can get a more powerful 15.4" laptop for the same or cheaper price.

I dont fully understand you - are you saying the the Asus is nowhere near as tempting.

I have read some great reviews of the Asus.

I put the wrong model number in my post; I've now edited it.

Although the specifications of the N10J might be technically better than the NC10, with regard to graphics capabilities, you have to weigh up the price to performance ratio and decide whether it's more important to pay the same price as a 15.4" laptop for the N10J, or pay less and buy an NC10.

I don't find the N10J offers enough to warrant paying the price of a 15.4" laptop for it, considering what you're paying for is simply better graphics.

Is the NC10 still up there with the best? Bought one for my sis a while back and she loves it, didn't have time to play with it myself though.

Does anyone know if the release of the NC20 might push down the price of the NC10 a bit in the near future. I'm looking to get one in the next few weeks.

Yes, it is still currently the best netbook on the market. The Register just reviewed it and gave it an Editor's choice award.

    Certainly it is.
There is a whole new review about the NC10 posted on The Register today.

Hi, got an nc10 two weeks ago and loving it. Just wondering about installing Microsoft Word which I have on a CD from an old laptop. I'm using Open Office which is fine but ideally I would like Word. How would I go about installing it? I've been reading about external optical drives, are they the way to go?

Why not copy the contents of the CD to a USB drive?

Going to buy an NC10 and was thinking of going with the blue one as the white one might be a bit girly looking, but if I'm going to put a skin with it, I reckon having the white case would look better. Might just go with white so!

Okay, having been following this thread for ages, I finally caved and bought the blue NC10 from Elara so I figured I'd give a bit of feedback along with my help questions! First some questions and thanks to anyone who can help!

    Questions:

    1. How do I go about putting Ubuntu or whatever other OS on it? I got the XP version and partitioned it as suggested (50:50 between C and D drive or about that I think). Does anyone have a dummies guide for putting another OS on or is it too late now?

    2. I paired a Nokia 6280 with it as a modem but am only getting a steady 115Kbps speed whereas with the USB dongle (Huawei E220 on 3) I've gotten up to 1.6Mbps on it. Is there any way to get a faster speed from my phone as a modem?

    3. I plugged a (mains-powered ) set of desktop speakers into the green port on the right side because of the really poor sound levels. Is there any way to make them a bluetooth device so I can connected to them wirelessly and if so what is the cheapest such device and will it affect the sound levels connecting via bluetooth? Or will I just have to buy bluetooth speakers?

    4. It gets quite warm on my lap. What is the best thing I could put under it to prevent me feeling the heat? Are all netbooks like this?

    5. Should I get rid of the free McAfee trial and if so can I get as good a solution for free and what would it be? I really want the best posible anti-virus/rootkit/other assorted nuisances protection on this and am willing to pay if that is the only way but would prefer not to!

    6. Is there any way to increase the sound levels apart from clicking on the sound icon and turning everything up to the max?

    7. Can I stick a vodafone RTG sim card into this E220 modem and what do I have to change to get it working if so? Will I have to download drivers or anything for a vodafone sim card to work in it? I want to be able to use their Vodafone Live service if 3 collapses which it frequently enough does. I asume it won't be a problem using vodafone live via my phone as a modem but haven't tested it yet.

    8. I am having problems using gmail. It keeps giving me pop-up blank windows (with a gmail inbox address in the address bar) and repeated questions if I want to connect to the internet. When I say yes up comes another blank gmail window! Anyone know what's going on there? I never got any pop-ups from gmail before on any computer. I got it working by switching gmail to the basic html option but that's not really satisfactory. I am wondering if it's anything to do with McAfee.

    Feedback

It really is a neat looking machine and I'm sure I will be glad of all the features on it as I go along compared to other netbooks. However, there are a few negatives I would like to point out.

Price: €368 with Elara and that was with me collecting it. The black was a few euro dearer but I prefer the blue and am glad I chose it. It's getting kinda pricey there! Btw, it was available for collection the day after I ordered it which I was very happy with. Now if only Elara would give a discount for boards members. ;)

Weight: Not being used to a laptop, I find it a little weighty on my lap. I was debating getting an Asus 7" job for this very reason as they are lighter and also would take up less of my cabin baggae allowance when travelling. I'll probably get used to it but still.

Heat: it gets quite warm on my lap! At the moment I have the cover provided for it as a buffer but I can still feel the heat!

Sound: this is the worst part. The sound level is really low on it! One site I went into it was practically useless for as the sound was barely audible even with everything turned up to the max! I have temporarily solved this by plugging in desktop speakers. Youtube is just okay but forget about blasting it up unless you plug desktop speakers. Unless I am missing something.

Trackpad: not being used to a laptop, I find this quite slow to use and the tapping thing is driving me nuts. I know I can turn this off, though. I have temporarily solved this by plugging in my desktop infrared mouse and am much much happier with the result. I will probably buy a bluetooth infrared mouse so I'll have one less wire connected. Probably a full size one, mind, as I am worried the mini ones might be too fiddly to use for everyday use though I might get one of those for travelling. However, I'm not sure I will be bringing it with me travelling on planes as it would take up too much of my cabin baggage allowance!

Battery: On 97% charge it's telling me I have 4 hours 45 mins left. Not quite the 6 hours I'd read somewhere. Now I do have it on max performance but the screen is too dim for me if I go to the normal. Hmm, it's just changed to 4:35 as I was typing this. I wonder is this a relativistic netbook! Will have to check the actual time it lasts on max performance with a normal non-relativistic time device!

I got the Huawei E220 modem from 3 working on it though it didn't recognise it through the set-up wizard and I had to go into the modem and eventually after messing around a bit it set itself up. Then I paired the nc10 and phone but when I tried to connect from the netbook it wouldn't work. Then I discovered that you have to connect from the phone to the laptop first by selecting the laptop from the phone menu and pressing connect after pairing it. Then you get prompted on the netbook for your XP password etc. (You also have to put in a pairing password to begin with when pairing the devices which is apparently 0000)

Ok, I think that's all for the moment! Thanks to anyone who can answer any of my questions and I hope my feedback will help anyone trying to decide whether to take the plunge. So far I am happy I got it though the heat issue and the crappy sound from it without plugging in speakers are quite annoying and disappointing in that order.

I just took the plunge too and went ahead and ordered a white one for collection from Elara. When I looked at videos online I liked the look of the white one and if I do decide to put a skin on it, I'd say the skin will work well against the white case.

Yep, it ain't the cheapest at €366 total but it does seem to be highly regarded by users so I'm sure it'll more than do the job of keeping me connected in airports and watching Divx files on planes etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 344 ✭✭vodafoneproblem

Wow, they seem to change the prices on elara every couple of days for it! You got it a couple of euro less than me, then. It was €366.something the other day before adding on the €1.something collection charge. (Don't get why there is a collection charge, btw!)

For the sound levels make sure you have both the master and the wave volume levels turned up. Double-click the volume icon in the systray to bring up the full volume controls and there'll be levels for a few things (or you should be able to get to the same thing through the sound option in the control panel). The sound won't ever be fantastic but it should certainly be usable and a lot better than you describe.

Also do remove the McAfee trial and use something like AVG Free, Avira or Avast.

    Ok i'll try to help:
1.You'd have to get an external CD/DVD drive of a big usb stick install that way,if you google something like "ubuntu/xp dualboot" it should give you a tutorials on how to set up the boot.ini file so you get a choice

2.Are you paired by USB or bluetooth? Are you using the nokia suite? Also 115kbs is the max edge speed i think,is your phone 3G?Is it in 3G coverage?

3.This should make your speakers wireless i think,As for the sounds mine is OK on wireless speakers you've pressed "FN+Right key" till the volume goes to the top?And also switch off the digital audio adjusting(something like that in the volume manager,Can't tell you because i'm on windows 7)

4.PCworld have things like this,if you do abit of searching you might find a netbook style one on ebay

5.Yeah scrap mcaffe avg is meant to be good!

6.FN and the right key on the directional pad will adjust the volume

7.Think you'll have to pay 99c for 50mb data which will be fine for checking email,You may need to set up your modem for vodafone live,it should have the software on there,If its an unlocked dongle if it's locked to three you won't be able to use vodafone unless you unlock it

8.Try it in mozilla firefox?Work's fine for me anyway on the newer version

The maximum connection speed on EDGE is 236.8 Kbps, but on average you get about 160-180 Kbps.

I'm posting this tonight from my beautiful new pink NC10. It's a lovely kinda dusky rose colour rather than lurid pink. It set up very quickly, connected to my home network in seconds, and seems to be going well so far as I begin to customise it. I expect I may look at getting extra ram fr it in the future, to make the most of it.

Finding it generally cool to use, but the mousepad and keyboard definitely do take some getting used to. I keep hitting the \ key instead of shift, although I'm training my little finger to reach a wee bit firther for that one. Also, because there's very little to discern the edge of the trackpad (because it's almost flush to the surface) I find I'm occasionally touching just above it and wondering why the mouse isn't moving.

That said, I still think it's lovely, and I'm glad that I made the decision to buy a samsung, and a pink one at that!

    Hi,

I think the N10 is a nice machine - would be ideal but I was hoping one of you could direct me to a reliable and "cheap" N10 supplier. They are more expensive in the retail stores. Do you know any other avenues, or advice on a similar product?

    Thank you

Ive been using a little laptop mouse that I had lying around work. I avoid the rudder type mouse on it because I honestly think that i'll break it with use. Other than that no complaints from me, excellent battery life and i even use it on buses.

Ok, thanks, missed the wave thing so turned that up to the max too along with everything else. It's...still just ok for youtube, even when you turn youtube's sound icon under the video up to the max as well. I mean, it's listenable to, at what I might describe as just about 'ordinary level' (and that's with everything turned up to the max!) but you can't get it to what could be described as loud and the sound is quite 'tinny' at that.

I have AVG free on another computer but it just scans your computer at whatever time you choose and doesn't seem to give 'real time' protection. A bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted...or the virus/rootkit/whatever has done it's damage. Do any of the other suggestions give 'real time' protection and why would they be considered better than McAfee if so? Am just trying to get the best possible protection as I don't want to pick up any threats on this computer which I want to use my credit card on etc.

    Thank you! Okay, here goes.

    1. Thanks. If anyone has any recommended links for same, would appreciate it.

    2. Paired by bluetooth and getting exactly 115.2 every single time I connect. Wasn't using nokia suite. Just pairing the two devices first and then doing the dial-up connection via the bluetooth icon. Yep, phone is 3G (nokia 6280) and in 3G coverage.

    3. Thanks for that link. Are you 100% sure you can plug desktop speakers into it? It's just that I see that it comes with its own set of headphones and am wondering if speakers will work too. Tried the fn+right key but it was already up to the max. Can't find anything called 'digital audio adjusting' but did adjust everything by right-clicking the sound icon in the sys tray?

    4. Thanks. Will have a look for a netbook version.

    5. The thing is, I am looking for justification for scrapping McAfee. At the moment it seems fine and I like all the options it appears to offer for adjusting security settings and the real time protection etc. Unless someone can point out why I shouldn't use it and why something else is better?

    6. Yep, already maxed out when I tried that, but thanks for the handy shortcut tip.

    7. Was just wondering which settings to use and where to input them and how to know if it's unlocked or not?

    8. Yeah, I know I can do that, and probably will get firefox, but was wondering why it was giving me problems in IE and was it to do with XP sp3 or McAfee or what. The good news is, it was just that one email so far and the others seems to be opening fine now!

Thank you very much for all your help!

Avast Antivirus gives realtime protection. As for why use it over macafee, it's free and from what i've heard much more effective than macafee.

Yep. Just open the contents of the disc in Windows Explorer, copy everything to a blank USB drive, plug it into your NC10 and reboot.

Should begin installing Vista automatically, as if you were using a CD (DVD). If not, check your bios settings are set to boot from USB drive before hard disk.

Doh! That'll teach me to not pay attention.

Still, procedure is the same. Just no need to restart before inserting USB drive to NC10.

I just collected my white NC10 from Elara today and I have to say I am loving it so far. It looks excellent and is the perfect size for my needs and I can touch type on it no problem with the great keyboard it has. The touchpad mouse isn't half as bad as I was expecting. The white case looks very well and isn't girly so I'll put plans to buy a skin for it on hold.

I've never seen a PC boot up so fast, even considering that I don't have many apps or services installed yet it's pretty impressive.

I've just installed Windows 7 beta in a very snappy 30 minutes, will play around with it tomorrow (what antivirus are people finding works well with it?).

I followed the instructions on this site for installing via USB drive as I had found other steps to do the installation didn't quite work and this site gives explicit XP steps to ensure the USB drive is bootable. Worked a treat.

All in all I'm delighted with the NC10 so far, thanks again to the poster that first tipped me to look into it (can't remember his username).

I was using avg but on a few occasions I've noticed it goes ape shít and starts hogging my cpu (over 60% or something like that). I've been using avira since then and it seems to be fine.
