Edirol UA-25 + Shure SM58 input signal problem...

    Hi folks,

    Just a quick query.
    I have no probs recording guitar plugged straight into the edirol UA25, but I'd like to record an acoustic and place a mic in front of it rather than plug it in.

    However, when I go to get a level before recording, the signal is VERY faint.
    Is it the mic?
    In theory, I know a condenser mic would be better, but I have recorded with SM58s on a different set up before with no problems..
    I'm not sure what I'm missing...

    Even when I turn the input up to the max, the signal is faint.
    I tried it through a DI box, and then into the edirol, and still the same result...

    have you made sure to switch from a line input to a mic input?

    There's a guitar lead going from the DI to the edirol (shouldn't this in theory act in the same way as if a guitar was plugged in), and a regular mic lead from mic to DI box. I checked the settings at the back of the edirol, but should double check this again. I'll report back...

    Looking at the unit online it seems that there is no Mic/Line switch...but Input 2 is marked Hi z so make sure you are using Input one.
    Does your mic cable terminate with a male Xlr or is it a jack? If its a jack the unit might automatically select a line input. I dont know the unit but its worth a try.

    yep, I have it in input 1 as well....
    I did have a mic lead with a guitar type input on one end (sorry I can't remember the exact terminology for the ends of leads), similar to this one:

    so I was thinking, hmm, maybe a mic lead with that type of end on it won't work. I was advised to get one of these to try and solve it using a regular mic lead:

    I thought a DI might do the trick as well though...

    Just use a normal Mic cable and I reckon that might solve your problem.

    I'm thinking the same thing. I'll just have to get an adaptor to plug it into the edirol..

    Why do you need an adaptor? The inputs accept both jack and mic cable by the looks of them.

    Does the mic need phantom powering? or the DI box?

    I know a mate of mine in England used a Rode condenser mic, aren't they battery powered? My DI box also uses a battery, so I'm at a loss for now....Hopefully I can right it...

    This is the unit you have, yes?

    If so then both inputs 1 & 2 accept XLR cables. It could be that the cable you are using is broken (one-legged). Try a different cable and see.

    To plug the SM58 into the Edirol you just need one of these:

    unless I'm doing something REALLY wrong, my mic lead won't fit, and I'm putting it in the right way :confused:

    Now it was late so maybe I wasn't paying attention and it needs to almost be forced in....:confused:

    I'll try a different cable...

    Why not go back to the shop you bought it and the lads there will sort you in 2 mins?

    Not at all! It's a perfectly good question, nothing at all to be ashamed of.

    It's just a forum isn't really the medium for sorting a problem such as yours - when 2 mins at the shop is!
