I know favourites has been done before here, but I was just looking for some recent opinions on games to get and avoid for any platform.

The best 5 I have gotten back recently would have to be ..

    1. Speedball II on the megadrive (Amiga version failed to work)
    2. Super Cars II on Amiga
    3. Defender of the Crown on Amiga
    4. Cadash on MAME
    5. Would like to say Airborne Ranger but the C64 version I got was pretty poor and could not find an Amiga version .. so maybe Times of Lore.

Anyhows, there is so much out there, I was just looking for tips or recommendations of anything that really is worth getting or avoiding.

    Cheers,

    JAK.

Escape Velocity/EV Overide - 2d Elite on the Mac and feckin brilliant.
Frontier - Crappy on the amiga but great PC port.
Mario All Stars - nuff said.
    Mario 64 - see above
    Zelda 64 - see above
    Zelda 3 - see above
    Yoshi's Island - see above
    Chrono trigger - SNES
    Seiken Densetsu 3 -SNES
Shining Force -MD/GG/MegaCD get them all
    Earthbound -SNES
Front Mission - SNES good but al lot of patience is required.
    Tales of Phantasia - SNES
Sensible Soccer - Amiga still the greatest footy game of all time.
    Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike - MD
Micromachines(all versions) - MD v3 on the playstation was the best but try dl that :)
    Flashback - MD
Puyo Puyo - All formats just dont play dr. robotnics mean bean machine. it sucked more than a dyson.
Another World - MAC that was the best version.
All old Lucasarts SCUMM games - MAC so much better than their pc counterparts.

As for bad ones, well i dont really know NARC - arcade what a pile of poo. the only good thing to come from that game was the version of the theme that the pixies done. Sonic Spinball was also another truly sh1t cashin from the sonic franchise. oh the horrible memories if that game....

Does anyone remember burnin rubber on the old amstrad 6128???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭TinCool

Not on the Amstrad, but I had burnin' rubber on my C64, didn't like it all that much as I preferred spy hunter.

Must have games. Well here's my list.

    Bubble Bobble (arcade)
    Puzzle Bobble (arcade)
    NBA Jam (arcade)
King of the Fighters '94 (arcade)
    Super Sprint (arcade)
Double Dragon I + II (arcade)
    Outrun (arcade)
    Impossible Mission (C64)
    Beach Head I (C64)
    Spy Vs Spy I + II (C64)

There are others, but the above are some of my all time favourite games. I play Puzzle Bobble regularly, along with quick blasts of Outrun, Bubble Bobble and Impossible Mission.

I've seen an ad pop up some place, I think on vg-network.com for an arcade controller with two controllers, it looks the dog's preverbials. Seriously thinking of getting one of these bad boys.

    ugh.... Must have games.... mmm

    Speedball II (Icecream! Icecream!!)
Uridium (horz scrolling shooter, ahead of its time and classic)

There was another game where you took over robots and scooted around various levels of a ship with the best robots being the 999 ones, and other had various 3 digit codes. Anyone remember it? You took the robots over by playing a sub-game again them. cant remember the name though

I will give my left testicle if someone can find a copy of Colonial Conquest (I think it was on the Atari ST, could have been the Amiga though).

    Bubble Bobble, all time great.
Gauntlet (if any of you ever played Gauntlet on the machine in Eden Quay and wonder where it is now... I bought it :) )

    DeV.

Does anyone remember burnin rubber on the old amstrad 6128???

Yep - I had it *shudder*

Sonic 2 - Like Blisterman so rightfully said, the best in the series. Anyone remember Sonic 2sday (Tuesday)? And the legendary lost levels?

Mario 3 - Again, Blisterman is right - best in the series. One of my fondest gaming memories.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

You do know Mario allstars included a far nicer version of mario 3(updated for the snes) As for sonic:) all the games where great, but prehaps too similar

    California Games - NES
Even if it's just for the BMX round and the funky music.

V on the C64 is terrible!

Indiana Jones on the Atari2600 has to be THE worst game i have ever played, the killing thing was that i actually paid for the original cartridge!!!

Yup and it looks dreadfull;) But i think by far the most famous rubbish game of all time is this CLASSIC!
    Atarithree.gif
No it IS actually a game... ET on atari2600:)
Well enough atari2600 bashing, I'd better mention some games worth getting....
    Galaxian
    Frogger
    Centipede
    Dig Dug
    Pole Position
    Pit Fall

mm, Jeff Minter's stuff was nice enough :)

Anyone remember Saint Dragon? Used to play it (well, the pirate version of course) on me old Atari ST (hence the pirate version, along with almost everything else in my collection and that of my 2 st wielding friends... though I did have the nice enough Grand Prix by Geoff Crammond), then got the mame version later on.
Catchy music :) Pox hard though

Gotta love the SF2 games, now that I can freeze the arcade machine with guile and stuff all the better... too much spare time on me hands eh?

Sly Spy was pretty slick on the C64... incredible music for 3 channels (whee, Tim and Geoff Follin)...
Anyone remember Mad Nurse, now that I think of it? ;)

    Regards games that suck..
DOUBLE DRAGON 3.... the Rosetta Stone ;) *looks for a sick bag*

....too lazy to think of any others.
Except Rtype for the Snes! Nice music on that too :)
Ahh and Super Metroid, even though it was kinda depressing...

And let's not forge-*slap*.. oh.. yeah, sorry :P

Can't believe out of all those games, no one even bothered to mention International Karate (IK+)? The true mother of all fighting games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,894 ✭✭✭TinCool

Yes IK+ was indeed a classic. The best beat 'em up of its time. Well, Way of The Exploding Fist (C64) was the dogs bits until it came out.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

IK+ was the first game i ever owned on the Amiga It's a class game but i played it to death! then i got speedball 2 and Ik+ was doomed ;) I also think that "KUNG FU" on the speccy was excellent and came out before both IK+ and Way of the exploding fist. I'll see if i can get a screen shot. Tin Cool did WOTEF come on two tapes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

saint dragon possibly the hardest game ever except for commandos

This is class. I found a live C64 radio station :) Check it out:

    http://c64.org/radio/

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

Holy Sh1t! where you find http://c64.org/radio/ ? nice link Tin Cool:D The last ninja tune is an all time classic;)
I love commando and still play it on the spectrum instead of the arcade:) Other classic's are the rambo serious on speccy there every bit as challenging as commando but you can get a few different weapons(Bow&Arrow Etc)
I remember playing Saint dragon on Amiga but what about these bad boy's....Project X by Team17 on the Amiga. The version i have is trained which is a good thing cause it's almost impossible. The other game is Assassin also by Team17 again rock hard but excellent. Both these games came out before Team17 decided they'd milk Worms for all it's worth:mad:
    ProjectX

    Assassin

Yeah, though there were a few on the C64 that made me break the joystick... when I got to me atari st I could just load another game in 20 seconds or so, rather than like.. 5 minutes on tape :P

Still can't beat stdragon on mame, with save/load states...

Bout the C64 music thing, anyone know the Sly Spy soundtrack and like it a lot?
    Ghouls and Ghosts?
Gauntlet on the Amiga? Led Storm? Black lamp.. Gauntlet III... All Follin brothers soundtracks..
What else has nice music... RType for the ST/C64? Zynaps? :)
Night breed on c64... Chimera, Snare, Thundercats..
That Rob Hubbard guy rocks :)
Wizball.. (Martin Galway! kickass), Times of Lore.... Terra Cresta...
And on the st, Exolon, Puzznic, Led Storm again... No Second Prize (amiga version is more realistic, but they're both great)..

And the SNES! The stuff they made it do with songs that were all 64k :P Donkey Kong Country, Equinox, Chrono Trigger, the FF series... Axelay, Super RType, Super Castlevania 4... Spiderman VS Xmen, Super Metroid (depressing, aye), Super Mario World (!), Phalanx, Zelda... the Turricans..

And so on! End of drool :P
Wasn't it cool how they could force relatively poxy hardware to do such great stuff though... like 3 mono channels on ST and C64, and shag all memory :)

    ...Anyway

    zynaps

Here's a few real classics for ya:

    For the humble '64:

    Creatures 2
    Mayhem In Monsterland
    IK+
Last Ninja 2 (best of the series by far IMHO)
Defender of the Crown (plays better than the Amiga version if you can bear the multiload)
    Power Drift
    Daley Thompson's decathlon (joystick-wrecking fun)

    On the Amiga:

    SWOS
    Syndicate
    Hostages (Rainbow Six's great-grandaddy)
Zombi (admittedly more of a fun little curio than a great game)

    And The Snes:

Zelda: A link to the past
    Secret Of Mana
    Street Fighter 2

    As for the real stinkers:
Hard Drivin' (all formats, gawd that was awful), Dick Tracy (c64)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,529 ✭✭✭zynaps

I couldn't figure out how to play hostages at all... plus the version I had was in french I think :P
    Super Huey was weird too.
Bubble Dizzy on the ST was annoyingly addictive :)

How about Shadowrun on the SNES? Nice rpg, though I drifted out of playing it halfway through...
Shadow Warriors.. nicest beat-em up I remember on the C64.. okay in arcade.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs now, that was a proper arcade beatemup... cooler than Final Fight.
    Gotta love Capcom!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

I love commando and still play it on the spectrum instead of the arcade

i meant the frustratingly difficult pc game.
super huey, how the feck do you turn on the engine? i think i will stick with microsoft flight sim 2002.
first samurai was realy good on the amiga/atari st shame about the dodgy sequal on the snes second samurai. me thinks winuae has trouble running first samurai and i cant find the atari st version and my disks of it seem to have demagnetised over the years.

Commando on PC? Anyway you'll find Fisrt Samurai (Vivid Image version I presume:) ) at http://www.atari.st/ If i remember correctly they've got an FTP server with 2000+ games and it's where i got a fair few atari ST games (Strictly so i could show my mates that Amiga versions of games ARE better:D )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,147 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Pole Position 2 on the atari 7600, ahh the memories, actually plugged back in the atari a few dyas ago, not as god as it once was. However reconected the old NES, and had so much fun with duck hunt once again...

    /me gets all sentimental

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

Duck hunt! I remember playin that on a mates nes:) he had another game to but the name escapes me at the mo....I had a light gun with my C64 along with a few games. Altough the games are emulated and support the gun I'll be damned if i could find it in the attic( and of course where would i plug it into my pc:( )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,118 ✭✭✭LoBo

    Speccy:

Bak 2 Skool (never played predecessor Skool Daze really)
    Manic Miner
    The Hobbit
    Lords of Chaos
    Bards Tale

    Amiga:

Speedball II (still play the PC port of it)
    Super Cars II

may think of other ones later. Bak 2 Skool was excellent: "I cannot tell a lie, sir, it was Eric"

I need help. Literally. I am completly obsessed with emulators and roms. Come help me get crazier. Fuel my obsession by directing me to a no-bull****/porn website that allows you to download roms.... And delete them 24 hours later, of course....

How bout' No. Read the rules. Ask again and your banned

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 Xander

Is there some kind of rule against roms, cos I'm sorry - I just soined today. I will fully abide by those rules set before me - no insult was meant by the message posted and wil not suggest the download of roms ever again. Phew....

    Unless....
Maybe you have taken my badly phrased message out of context

    "no-bull****/porn website"

That means no Bull**** AND/OR Porn

It's totally gross, you know which one I mean. I repeat the fact that I didn't mean any offense when posting this message.

    http://www.idsa.com/

this is a very nice organisation whose sole purpose for existance is to track down and shut down software pirate organisations. they are very good at what they do and dont have any quams(sp?) about acting against site outside the us. now these boys also have a very low opinion of emulation even though 90% of the software is no longer on sale and noone loses any money except the owner of the site on bandwidth charges. So they also enjoy shutting down emulation sites.

Now lets imagine one of their operatives comes across boards.ie. "oh look boards on emulation and games, i'd better take a look in there. tut tut tut, 0-day warez, and emulation rom links. deary deary me looks like its time to get the lawyers involved" do we like lawyers here? no they are the reason insurance is so high here in ireland so we want to do everything in our power to make them starve. so in short DONT ASK FOR ROMS.

Well, of course it's okay to have roms if you also own the original boards/cartridges/etc etc.

And I'm sure EVERYONE here who happens to have any roms also has the originals. I mean of course.

Anyway back to the topic...I've recently gotten hooked(Again:D )
on the C64 (CC64) In my opinion these are must have games for any emulation fan..
    1. Groysor (Went by another name in the arcade can't remember what:confused: )
2.Ikari warriors (Excellent, similar to commando)
    3. Rainbow Islands (All time classic)
    4. Wonder Boy (really great game)
    5.Gauntlet 1,2
6.Head over Heels! ( Another all time classic)
    7. Booty (graphics are sh1te but one of the first games i ever played)

I had both of the above on the Amiga and i'd say monkey Island 2 was better:) BASS was still an excellent game just not as funny;)Does anyone that owned BASS remember getting a free comic in the box?

How many bloody Leisure Suit larry games did they make:D? I had at least 3 along with Police Quest. I'm sure it was sierra that published them all....*me wanders off to investigate*
