Cork footballers threaten to join strike

The Cork senior footballers have confirmed their support for the hurling players in their dispute with the county board over the appointment of manager Gerald McCarthy and have announced they too will strike “unless a resolution is found” is to the satisfaction of both panels.

In a statement released late this evening, the football panel said they are in "unanimous agreement" to withdraw services after the National Football League "unless a resolution is found to the satisfaction of the 2008 hurling and football panels".

    Cork team against Dublin

Cork look to team of league rookies for Dublin tie
    By Michael Ellard

COULD this be a first in the 81-year history of the National Hurling League — 15 players from one county all making their competitive debuts on the same day?

That is the story of the Cork team selected to play Dublin in the first game of the Allianz NHL at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday.

County champions Sarsfields have five players on the side in goalkeeper Alan Kennedy, left corner back Conor O’Sullivan,. centre-back Ray Ryan, left half back Craig Leahy and right half forward Tadhg Óg Murphy.

Championship runners-up Bride Rovers and St Finbarr’s have two representatives each. The Bride Rovers duo are Barry Johnson and Michael Collins. Johnson is named at midfield, with Collins at full-forward.

The St Finbarr’s representatives are Eoin Keane, named at right half back, and Glen O’Connor, chosen at midfield.

Six other clubs have one representative each. Chris Murphy of Blackrock is the new full-back. Eoin Clancy of Fermoy is at right full back; Aidan Ryan of Midleton is on the 40 with Darrren Crowley of Bandon on the left wing. Adrian Mannix of Kilworth and Eoghan Cronin of Glen Rovers hold down the two corner forward positions with Mannix on the right.

CORK (SH v Dublin): A. Kennedy (Sarsfields); E. Clancy (Fermoy), C. Murphy (Blackrock), C. O’Sullivan (Sarsfields); E. Keane (St Finbarr’s), R. Ryan (Sarsfields), C. Leahy (Sarsfields); B. Johnson (Bride Rvs). G. O’Connor (St Finbarr’s); T. Óg Murphy (Sarsfields), A. Ryan (Midleton), D. Crowley (Bandon); A. Mannix (Kilworth), M. Collins (Bride Rvs), E. Cronin (Glen Rvs).

Subs:C Cronin (Lisgoold); A Kearney (Midleton), J Moran (Carrigaline), G O’Driscoll (Newcestown), Tony Murphy (Carrigaline), R O’Driscoll (Sarsfields), Paudie Lynch (Kilworth), C O’Leary (Blackrock), Cian McCarthy (Sarsfields).

Its going to be a tough weekend for the County Board.
The footballers upping the pressure with there statement last night, The supporters march tomorrow and the inevitable beating on Sunday by the Dubs.

Is this the end for Frank Murphy?

from an outsiders view whatever the rights and wrongs and all the internal wrangling that is going on there is a much bigger story here. The antics of a few - maximum 100 people - are jeopardising clubs the length and breadth of the country.
If the players who have withdrawn their services succeed and get the manager removed then what is to stop other clubs and counties doing this? Can you imagine a good u-16 club hurling team in Limerick, Kilkenny, Antrim saying they are not going to play because of the manager for that year? This is what will happen. Some of the Cork hurlers were playing legends, O'Sullivan, O'Hailpin etc... and now they have disgraced themselves and their sport over their antics.
And now with the Cork footballers threatening to strike Cork GAA is in a mess and it will take a generation to sort it out.
First of all - and I may be wrong - how can you go on strike? these players are simply withdrawing their services - they don't get paid for playing for their county.
So the Cork GAA should simply treat them all as if they've retired from playing from their county and take in the next batch of players. AND STICK TO THIS POLICY.
Secondly does their "strike" run on into club games as well? If not then it should
Thirdly - I can understand if the players were not getting their GAA agreed entitlements e.g. mileage, gear, meals etc... but they are getting these items and I'm sure a lot more. If there were problems with the manager/management throughout the year then why didn't they bring it up with the county board at that stage - perhaps they did.
And Lastly - they need to take a long look at themselves and ask themselves "Am I doing the right thing for Cork Hurling, Cork GAA, my club, my association and my family". Unfortunately the GPA is stuck in the middle of this and in the long term some of the players may dellude themselves into thinking they are right. The manager is selected by the county board and the manager selects the players. they all train together, they win together and they lose together.

So to go back to opening statement - club players all over the country are seeing what is happening and they are starting to dictate who trains / manages them. And if this Player issue gets into clubs the GAA would have a crisis on its hands that would probably cause a split in the GAA.
Play your sport and love your sport - never discredit your sport.

So Cork is now responsible for the destruction of GAA in this country? Is this the first time a team has refused to play for their management? Of course it ****ing isn't.

As for that team, absolutely nothing up front. Nothing.

I predicted a Dublin win by 26 points, I fear it could be worse now. :o

No its not and it isnt the first time this particular group of players have done it either they really just need to face up to the fact thay they aint good enough anymore to expect to just walk into AI finals as the old saying goes ''Father time waits for no man''

The sooner McCarthy f**ks off the better now as far as i'm concerned. I had some bit of respect for him up until about a week ago but this charade has come to a head with the footballers getting involved.

Can I ask what's happened in the past week thats lessened your opinion of one of the greatest legends in Cork GAA history, apart from footballers coming out in support of the players against FRANK MURPHY

But who in their right mind is going to take the job under these circumstances?

My opinion of Gerald Mac took a serious dent when he leaked the O'Reilly Document and made some pretty nasty statements about Sean Og's personal life in the papers. Right then was when whatever trust existed between him and the players was irretrievably shattered. If he stepped aside for the good of the County he'd win back a lot of respect.

this is a power struggle and no-one is winning. If the manager steps aside then its deemed the county board lost and the players win. If the manager stays then the county board wins and the players decide to withdraw their services or not.
The best option to end it all would be for the entire Cork county board, all managers and all players involved to withdraw their services and then start again. its clean and it removes dead wood. Clubs should stand up and be counted. Perhaps the clubs county delegate(s) are going there too long and aren't putting up the fight but are playing politics.
In any case it doesn't really matter because neither team will win too much this year as they are not good enough anyhow - "Father Time" has caught up with some of the players. Perhaps the county club hurling and football champions should represent their county until this is all sorted out.

Massive show of support today for the 08 hurlers in Cork City Centre.

Estimates range from 10,000 to 13,000 of a turnout.

    The Cork public have spoken.

The turn out tomorrow for the developement side will be interesting. If might be the first time in the history of Cork GAA that the County Board will actually inflate the "official" size of the crowd.

Well were many of ye out marching today??? I heard me father saying that Ger Mc and Donal Og were on Marion Finucane today getting their points across.

What do people make of the Footballers threat of strike action?

Personally I can't for the life of me see what such action will achieve. The French would be proud of all this striking:D

ger mc can't possibly win in this situation.

he'd achieve a lot more and doubtless gain more respect by standing down for Cork hurling.

I heard that alright. Thought Ger Mc came across very well on it and Donal Og very poorly.

Having said that, it was all very childish sounding. You said, he said, etc.

Some massaging of figure going here, RTE estimated the crowd yesterday between 7-10k, the official attendance today was over 2000 cork hurling supporters. About average for this time of year, against a team like Dublin.

Not a bad result, Cork will obviously be building for the future for the next year or two

There were more people at the Cork-Dublin match than the Waterford-Tipp match, just to let you know.

1000 is nearly an average league gate for us anyway.

most of cork fans are bandwagoners who go to championship games only.

I was at the Dublin game today but not the march yesterday as i dont support the players.

I think those who boycotted the Dublin game today are a disgrace.

I dont know why Ger is staying on as manager as he is not wanted but at least support the players wearing the jersey.

Id rather a team get beaten who want to play than a team whose ego has gotten the better of them.

Wha other team in the world picks their manager, none.
