a great engine. My wife had a 00 one for a few years. she was easily getting over 40 on it, but she drove easy enough. a little flier it was.

what about the 1.3 ones, are they as nippy ? MPG, which one has a timing chain ?

The 1.3 is a pushrod engine so it has a chain, but that also means it sounds like a bag of nails. I get about 30MPG or less around town, 35-40 on long journeys. I don't think mine's a particularly good example - they don't take well to a lack of oil changes and mine had about 5 years of unknown service history.

1.25 has a timing belt, supposed to be changed every 100,000 miles according to Ford.

Does the mazada 121, 1.3 have the same engine, suspension etc as the ford
    or just the same body

Exact same car, just with some different plastic.

No, that's because the tappets aren't adjusted correctly. It's normally caused by neglect and infrequent oil changes because all these cars ever do is short runs, but is actually relatively easy to adjust manually.

For a 40-year old+ engine design it's actually not bad at all, I had one as a runaround about six months ago and it was a great banger. Sure, the 1.25 16v is a nicer engine but if you can convince someone their engine is fecked when buying ye olde HCS/Kent block isn't that bad at all.

Mine is a lot quieter than most, especially any Mk. III's I hear, but it's still pretty harsh sounding compared to the Zetec-SE or any other modern twin-cam engine and idling makes the gearstick and everything shake just like an old diesel. I've driven my friend's '05 1.25 Fiesta and the engine's so quiet in comparison I wouldn't know I'd do without the rev counter - my own car doesn't have one nor does it need one :)

I've a 1.3L Escort (same engine), and I get around 45mpg I reckon out of it.
