I just want to draw some parallel's here and I think they are very fair (for anyone raeding it from what I have seen the young everton Gosling has bags of potential) butjust hear me out.

Gosling has just scored a goal to win a merseyside derby, and a cup tie to boot. He can now have as many bad games as he wants without significant criticism and the full support of every Everton fan.

Lucas Leiva came on with 20 minutes to go against everton on the 20th October 2007, he replaced Steven Gerrard, he changed the game, and winning goal was scored from the spot by Dirk Kuyt, does everyone remember how we got that penalty? Lucas was firing the ball into there net Phil Neville made a phenomenal save, pity he wasn't the goal keeper.

Lucas has yet to have a single break in a red shirt, he scored a screamer in the Carling cup as far as I remember, only a few games ago player probably the best pass and Liverpool player has this season to set Gerrard through. Infact he has 5 or 6 direct assists this season.

Time, he needs and just a little support. I don't really think the terrible reaction of some Liverpool fans will phase him. but all the same, if you support Liverpool you support - you can be a critical constuctively. But do not ever lambast a Liverpool player, especially a young one who may well have a a big part to play in our future.

Have you considered that maybe Rafa couldn't buy anyone in this window - regardless of what happened with Keane ? The club is skint - that should be obvious to anyone (considering the loans, extensions on loans, etc..). We got very little in cash back for Keane (the bulk of the initial fee was paid by canceling the money we still owed to Spurs for him) and there's no guarantees that money would have been made available to Rafa but even if it had - a couple of m wouldn't have gone very far. Sure he could have bought in another bit part player but then people would have slated him for buying more dross.

I'm disappointed we didn't get anyone in on loan but I'm not in the least bit surprised that we didn't buy. From what I've seen & heard we did make enquiries about Quaresma on loan but obviously that didn't work out. That we didn't go for anyone on loan earlier in the window makes me wonder if the wages bill was an issue.

If you think things were bad during the January window you'll be in for a shock in the summer unless there's significant 3rd party investment in the club.

tbh - who gives a flying f$#% what Utd are doing ?

On the Quaresma thing I read that his agent was looking for wads of cash which put paid to Liverpool's interest. Given his previous statements I'm glad we didnt get him - of course me saying this probably means he will start playing brilliantly for Chelsea.

I'd agree that there seems to be very little cash around and unless we get new owners in I would expect an even worse situation come summer time.

Also Alonso and Torres doubtful for Portsmouth
RAFA TO LEAVE IT LATE ON SPAIN DUO
    Jimmy Rice 06 February 2009
Rafa Benitez will wait until the last moment to decide if Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso are ready to play their third game in a week against Portsmouth.
Alonso picked up a knock during the extra-time defeat to Everton on Wednesday, while his international teammate lasted 101 minutes despite a lack of match sharpness following his hamstring troubles.

Benitez will put his players through their paces late on Friday afternoon before deciding if the pair have recovered sufficiently.

He told his weekly press conference: "Torres is fit but tired. We will see if he can be ready for tomorrow. When you have some players playing a lot of games in a row - normally two games in a week - it is difficult for them to manage. You have to rest players and, if you cannot, there is a big risk.

"It depends on him. We will talk with him in training today. All the players are a little bit tired so we have to make decisions - Torres will be one of the big decisions.

"Xabi had a knock on his ankle so we will have to see. We are also without Lucas (suspended) and Degen is injured."

One man who definitely won't be fit for Fratton Park is Steven Gerrard, who limped out of the Goodison defeat after 16 minutes with a hamstring injury.

Benitez is confident Liverpool have enough quality to cope without their 15-goal captain.

He said: "It will be around three weeks. It depends on each player if they can be ready sooner. The doctors and physios are working really hard with him and you never know.

"We have enough quality. Kuyt, Babel, Torres, Ngog - we have a lot of different options up front. Benayoun played as a second striker the other day.

"They have the quality to play against Portsmouth and win, and we'll think about the other games after that."

Meanwhile, Benitez spoke of his respect for Tony Adams, who took over as Pompey boss following the departure of Harry Redknapp earlier in the season.

"He's doing a good job and working hard in a difficult situation. They have now signed some players with quality. Maybe they'll need time," said the Liverpool boss.

"Always with a new manager you need experience and it's not easy, but I think he has a great future as a manager.

"He has experience as a player and assistant manager. He will need more time. This year he is under pressure but if he can cope with that then he'll be a very good manager.

"He is clever and calm. When you talk to him, he tries to think in a different way, and that's positive."

As I personally remember it we were undeniably lucky to win that game given the antics in the other box. It really is reaching IMO if a shot that led to a peno is what you have to resort to to defend the player. That screamer was against non-League Havant and Waterloo.

This thread is amazing, you have people who are far too simplistic-'grrr Kuyt is crap because he is not Ronaldo- and then you have other deluded fans (I am sure they would refer to themselves as the hardcore though) who will not listen to anything negative said about the team-justified or not.

Fan of Kuyt, can see what he offers but I would take the opposite view of one or two of the more recent posters and suggets Lucas will not make at the club in the long-term. I think he will go the same way as Warnock, Le Tallec, Sissoko and Pongolle. The Premiership just seems to fast and physical for the boy.

you can argue that Cech, Casillas and Buffon might have done better etc. but if you can't except that was an excellent goal then I have no doubt who the dilusionally blinkered poster is here.

Never been a huge fan of his but Balague reckons there were advances made in discusions relating to Rafa's contract at the weekend.

    http://www.guillembalague.com/rumores_desp.php?titulo=Positive Advances in Benitez Talks&id=168

EDIT: And on a less than positive note - it's 2 years to the day since Moores sold his stake in the club to Gillet & Hicks

I don't know if this is a good or bad thing:
It has been suggested that the Liverpool owners have even consulted with Randy Lerner, the owner of Aston Villa, and are now satisfied that the level of control over football matters that Benitez is demanding at Liverpool is no greater than many other Premiership managers currently enjoy.

If it results in the issue being put to bed, I guess it can be interpreted as a good thing.

Afternoon folks. Ive decided to remove the 'serious hat' for the afternoon as was wondering if any of you think we could learn something from the NFL............Would this kind of thing distract you from dirk kuyt flying down the wing?;)

Reading Keane's comments there about his time at Liverpool. Have to say, he has handled the whole thing with a lot of class and dignity. Can't understand how some on here believed he had an attitude problem.

Riera was taken off as much as Keane was, possibly more..

If you have time to look back or even remember, note the difference in their respective reactions to be substituted.

Just cause you want some ****ed up porn it isn't a reason,
you haven't used it a sentance either so I can tolerate it.

but nothing, not anything annoys me more than someone who sees some sarcastic or coincidental, or in this case see's something they think is stupid (benitez not buying a replacement striker) and calling that irony.

I never give people a hard time about spelling or grammar (cause I fail there big time) but Irony, nobody has any excuse, if you don't understand the word, don't use it. Everyone wins.

Talk of Torres being out injured for the Portsmouth game.

    Kuyt, Babel and Ngog .

Im sure Distin and co are quaking in their boots at the minute.

Is there any word on Nemeth at the minute? Wouldnt mind him getting a chance ahead of Ngog and Kuyt up front when he recovers from his Fractured cheekbone.

either way he's on loan for a month anyway. I would imagine if he wears one of those masks he might be able to play a few games for them before that loan spell is up - not sure tbh.

have noticed lately there seems to be a divide now among liverpool fans their either with rafa or against him.
i can understand peoples frustration and this is a great platform to air your views but recently people have gone crazy in their lambasting of our manager.
and poor lucas has came in for a lot of abuse a lot of which is undeserved wasnt to long ago people were eulogising him after some good performances now he is the focus of some peoples criticism.
if i had to criticise any liverpool player at the moment it would probably be kuyt who i believe should make way on the right for benny because he has been poor of late although his work rate is always good this is not a good enough reason for him to be a permanent fixture his ball retention is dreadful and his passing is astray.a rest could revitalise him.
hopefully stevie wont be out to long it is impossible to stress how important he is to us.

if you had of said to me at the start of the season coming in to febuary and you will be only 2 points behind utd i would have took hand and all of you

Keane reacted "badly" to being substituted once. And this was after 5 months or so of subsitutions on the 55 minute mark. I recall he said to Steven Gerrard "I bet it's me" when the board went up.

    You're such a drama queen.

Keane reacted badly every time that he was subbed off. I would too with a price tag like that, particularly for your childhood club :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,396 ✭✭✭Ardent

Whether he did or not, I'd rather see a player reacting badly to being taken off than one who doesn't give a rat's ass one way or the other.

Keane did NOT react badly everytime he was substituted. Stop looking for reasons for his departure other than Rafa being an idiot.

Jesus the man himself was at great lengths to say how good he was in training.

Even today, at the Spurs press conference, Keane showed his class by rising above taking a parting shot at Rafa.

On a sidenote, I heard Voronin is being recalled.

Bringing back somebody else who had a similar scoring record to Keane. No loss then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,317 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Scratch that-Voronin got 6 goals in a season at Liverpool. Keane Got 7 in what many view as a terrible half a season.

Rafa's solution to selling a quality player without any time to buy a back up.

He will provide something different up front.

Given a season long loan was agreed I would be very surprised if that happened.

Was talk on some other forums of Pacheco possible making the squad tomorrow, was also a rumour he travelled as an unnamed sub for the Everton game. Apparently he has been one of the best players for the reserves this season but he's still pretty young - turned 18 on the 5th of January, so would be a bit of a surprise.

saw it all live this mornign on sky sports news - he was very fair, I'm sure there's more to it than he let on, but he composed himself really well. Unlike a certain Jermain P. no no that's too obvious J. Pennant.

I woulda thought Nemeth might have got a chance this season in liverpools lesser games akin to the way Delfounso has been for Villa, if he was given a chance maybe now people would consider him an option.
