(IFMMA / UFR) MMA Officials Course in Dublin

Peter Lavery, UFR Ref/Judge who does a lot of work for Charidy but doesn't like to talk about it... ...is organising a course designed to recruit officials for upcoming and sanctioned MMA events in Ireland. A course is shortly to be held in the North and we're now looking to hold a course here in Dublin.

Due to continued controversy over judges and referee's calls, it is time to organise so that there is a pool of judges and referees to call on if needed.

At present there are less than 10 referees in the country and only five that are sanctioned to ref at a high level. The UFR have two refs that can officiate at title level fights.

There are only a handful of guys that will take the risk to act as Judges so the IFMMA and UFR are looking for more guys/girls to step up to the mark.

This is an officially sanctioned UFR/IFMMA course. It would be great if we could get a member from every club, or even a couple from every club, to sign up for the course either as a ref or judge or both. Hopefully, bringing the course to Dublin will make it accessible to even more clubs and increase the pool of available officials.

The course will take place on a weekend soon (date to be confirmed).

Could all interested parties please email their interest to; we'll firm up the date as quickly as possible.

    Cheers.

I like this idea. I think it's a step in the right direction.

    Some questions:

What about those who've reffed at the MMA League? How do they fit in it to this mix?

It would a good idea if UFR/ROT/etc made their criteria more public. I'm just being lazy but maybe they have them on their sites, but I'm not sure exactly what they are.

I think there'll always be dodgy calls as viewed by fans, as is the nature of the sport, or indeed any sport. A cert won't guarantee that refs/judges will be proficient or biased, although it's a start.

Would everyone who shows up get 'qualified'? If they f*cked up on the job would there be a review?

Like I said, I think it's a good idea. Let's make it a great actuality.

I would like to think that everyone who showed up would get the chance to ref/judge at some level.Thats the only reason I personally am giving up my time to try to do this.David Patterson spoke to me about it a few weeks ago due to the controversy over the last show and after a frank discussion we arrived at the fact that there are too few officials in Ireland to cover all levels of this rapidly growing sport.
In my post on fighttalk to announce the course,I mentioned that there are maybe only five guys qualified to ref at a high level [ Dave you were one of the five!!!! ].With so many new shows and levels [ amature, semi pro ' b'class, pro ] you are going to need more guys to ref'/judge to a high and fair standard - it goes without saying!
I think that with regular courses and assesments we can have enough people here to cover every event and be experienced enough to carry out the job.
I will cover on the course, not only the basic rules of each show, which I think are more or less standard now but what a ref should be looking for during a fight, how he should prepare before a show, how to control a fight and above all fighter safety.
I would like to think that as we move toward a proper sanctioning body here in Ireland that if a ref or judge makes a wrong call or bad decision then he should be able to explain himself and if he cannot then he should be stood down or dropped a level or two. This way every official should be constantly monitoring their own position and try to be the best at their job.
I will also be looking for promoters to back me on a call that if you have the best refs/judges on your show then they should be compensated.
Anyhow,Im open for questions if you want to ask .
    Peter

    Dave is an aMiNal ref.

He reffed one of my fights and made calls I wish he hadn't but was totally right to do so.

    Go Jonesy!

I'd also be interested in doing this course.

    Peace

    I second that.
Dave has been proven right by video evidence from previous disputes, and stopped my fight with Tom Haddock when I couldn't defend myself or signal to stop.

Can anyone sign up for this or would it be the view of compeditors/trainers that it is only for those who have trained/competed to call a match?

This is an old thread that AFAIK has been forgotten about.
If i remember the IFMMA was the irish federation of mixed martial arts.
I only know this cos wen i first started reffing it was stitched into my shirt.
But i dont use that shirt anymore. I dont think there is an IFMMA anymore (although i could be wrong) and sure the UFR isnt the UFR anymore either.
Like alot of ideas in the country.... ran out of steam.

Best off starting a new thread asking for info. It pee's people off to read through a thread to find it's 2 years old.
