    hey people
i have noticed on you-tube that there exists the option to give a comment a thumbs up or a thumbs down...

this is quite a nice feature as post which are designed to be blatantly provocative/ rude/ spam etc are "thumbed down" pretty quick and are subsequently not shown unless specifically requested to be by the user.

here at boards.ie we have the "thanks" button. which is also useful as when someone has genuinely helped you, or has made a good or valid point or if you wish to second their post without bloating the thread with a "+1" post, you can click the "thanks" button

i know this site is pretty busy (just look at the users online at the bottom of the home page!) and that they have to do their best to keep threads on topic and reasonably civil! so it may be a while before an unsavory post is spottted by an admin , at which stage it could have muddied the thread beyond repair! sooooo.....

would it be possible to have a "thumbs down" button. and if a post is thumbed down beyond a set threshold (say -4/-5 on aggregate) it will be hidden but not removed?

i know this would be open to abuse, and that minority opinons do count and are valid no matter how many people disagree with them. maybe a "blatant ba5tard" button might be more appropriate.

just a thought! (feel free to thumb this suggestion down! :D)

We should never make it easier for people to be discourteous.

I don't want this place to be anything like youtube in all honesty

A thread generally isn't 'muddied beyond repair' if people use the report post button, which works far better than a thumbs down option ever would.

Maybe we should have a button for each possible response and do away with all this pesky typing altogether.

If some one is derailing a topic then you already have a "no thanks" button. Its this one report.gif on the left hand side of the relevant post.

Dude...I've already reduced my keyboard to only three keys - Music, Porn and Thanks.

The introduction of a fourth 'Un-thanks' key would just be too confusing.

If Boards discussions ever begin to resemble Youtube spamfests, I for one will find an alternative medium.
