    All numbers divisible by 9 also add up to 9 or another multiple of 9
    e.g
    18 = 1+8 =9
    117= 1+1+7=9
    423= 4+2+3=9
    693=6+9+3=18

    The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

    Spiral staircases in medieval castles are running clockwise. This is because all knights used to be right handed. When the intruding army would climb the stairs they would not be able to use their right hand which was holding the sword because of the difficulty of climbing the stairs. Left handed knights would have no troubles, except left handed people could never become knights because it was assumed they were descendants of the devil.

    (Useless fact for some people but I found it brilliant)

    A gaylord, bulk bin, or corrugated pallet box is a pallet size box usually made of triple wall corrugated fiberboard. These are used for bulk packaging and were initially produced by Gaylord Container Company of Gaylord, Michigan. A gaylord box is often 48" x 40" x 36" (approx. 120 cm x 100 cm x 90 cm) and fits neatly on a standard shipping pallet

    Vikings used to use ravens to find new lands. Ravens can't land on water so they would throw one up and it would fly very high. If it saw land it would fly off towards it, otherwise it would land back on the boat. According to stephen fry iceland was discovered that way

    In other news, a parsec is a unit of measurement (The distance between the Earth and the sun).

    The distance between the earth and the sun is an astronomical unit (AU)

    The parsec is derived from the AU, but is not equal to it.

    A parsec is 3.26 light years.

    The parsec is defined as the length of the adjacent side of an imaginary right triangle in space. The two dimensions that this triangle is based on are the angle (which is defined as 1 arcsecond), and the opposite side (which is defined as 1 Astronomical Unit, which is the distance from the Earth to the Sun). Using these two measurements, along with the rules of trigonometry, the length of the adjacent side (the parsec) can be found.

    A boring fact is that knowing things like the above leaves me no friends.

    Having 'teaser' thread titles doesn't generate more interest in your thread. Sure, people will still click through (or hover the cursor over the title) but they file your user name in their internal cunt file.

    A giraffe can clean its ears with its tongue

    Flatfish (halibut, flounder, turbot, and sole) hatch like any other "normal" fish. As they grow, they turn sideways and one eye moves around so they have two eyes on the side that faces up

    There are more than 150 million sheep in Australia, a nation of 17 million people

    The oldest breed of dog is the Saluki

    Incorrect. The rule is year's divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are divisible by 400.

    Hold on, surely if 2000 was a leap year then 2100 will be? 2000 +(25*4yrs):confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 30,772 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

    No because years aren't exactly 365.25 days. They are slightly less and the skipping 3 days every 400 years makes up for this

    If a year is divisible by 400 it is a leap year.
    If a year is divisible by 4 but not by 100 it is a leap year.

    All other years are "common" years.
