Trying to connect Vodafone USB to using Linux??

I'm trying to help a friend out here, he has a net book that runs Linux Debian and I'm trying to connect to the internet using a Vodafone Mobile Broadband E169 Stick Modem. Its a CnM Book and its details are below, if anyone could help me out here I'd be very grateful as I never used Linux before. A link to the net books manufactor http://www.cnmlifestyle.com/
I've tried a few different things to get it going but keep getting "Time out, Link down" when I try connect it??

I'd suggest checking with the USB dongle's Manufacturer [Huawei] I remember hearing that they did Linux drivers on their website a while back

I am not expert but a quick search shows that it can be done, but... it does look to bit a little tricky.

and then lastly there seems to be some instructions here:

but it may not support your modem

I haven't a clue about Linux but this site maybe of help as it deals with getting THREE and Linux to work, all the companies nearly use the same hardware so what works for the likes of Three shouldn't be too hard on Vodafone or O2.
