Pod users.....

This is a bit of a departure for me. I decided to get a Pocket Pod recently so I could play into the early hours of the morning and learn certain solo's while having the backing track playing on an mp3 player etc. I have to say I am very impressed indeed with this little pod.

Recently I have also been trying to locate a decent place to practise without having to lug Guitar amps and a PA with me each time. The quality of the Pod has me thinking of a Pod X3 Live through a PA. (No guitar amp required)

Is this all I would need, as in POD X3 and a decent PA? Does anyone else use this setup?

Ste there's a guy on here called "Thomas from Presence" who uses something like that. I saw him playing in the Porterhouse before and he had a great sound. Might be worth sending him a pm. Do a search for "Edwards" and you'll see he made a comment in my thread "Do ishi still sell Edwards?" if you want to pm him.

I know Tom. Hopefully he'll reply as he does check in every now and again.

Just looked up this Pocket Pod. Sounds like the Korg Pandoras Box I used to have. Must pick one up for practicing. Started playing electric again recently and have to wrap up by 9pm so I don't piss off the neighbours again. Whats it like as an effects unit in front of an amp? I'd imagine it's not the best but still handy for practicing with headphones

Might be interested in one of these actually, have had less and less time to play plugged into my Blues Deluxe, and even my Champ 600, these days with my neighbours/brother and the likes. Had been considering a pod X3, but it's probably overkill for my usage.
    What's the quality like Ste?

What's it like in front of an amp? Haven't tried it enough to really give an opinion.

Quality wise I have to say I am impressed, but there are 2 caveats to this. 1) I have a pretty good set of Sennheiser headphones. 2) I am easily impressed :pac:

In fairness I had a Vox Tonelab and the Pod is far better. The Tonelab made me think that I wouldn't even bother with Digital simulators for practise, never mind anything else, but this has me thinking twice about that. The PC software is great too.

    Hi mate,

I play my Pod XTL straight through a PA in my room and its great, i only use one of the PA speakers (because thats all i have!) but its pretty cool. Then if you hook it up to your computer the pod acts a a soundcard and will play your music on the computer through the PA and its so much better to play along with!

The PA i use is called "the box", its cheap enough and its on thomann.

I assume as the X3 is the next pod it would have all the same features!

I saw a band in dundalk recently called 'Over The Edge' and the guitar player uses only a Line 6 Pod XT Live. Guitar into the XT Live and then into the band PA. Obviously you need a monitor to hear yourself, but the sound was not bad.
Many amp choices to choose from. Fender and Mesa cleans to Marshall rock and up to metal amps like Mesa Rectifier and Diesel. Not the real thing, but does the job.

You can hear them live on their Bebo page if you search.

Just as an afterthought, has anybody tried using a pod into a cheap PA power amp then into some cabs? 2x300w power amp is roughly around €150, beats paying €1k+ for them new warwick hellborg poweramps and nearly same again for the preamp (unless it sounds crap of course, in which case its a costly experiment)

Stephen I'm using a Crate Powerblock and two generic 12" speaker cabs. This is solely to monitor onstage with or to push out the Pod X3 Live at gigs where the venue is too small to put it through the PA.

I like the Crate because it has an XLR out on the back which allows me to control my fron of house volume. I was the only POD user at the Vibe for Philo in The Button Factory and the monitors in that place where enough to hear myself gloriously.

If you can't get a Crate there's no need to get a big silly valve poweramp. That defeats the purpose. A powered speaker or keyboard amp could do the same thing or a powered wedge monitor. Anything but a guitar or bass amp that has a line in really. If you're just going into a rehearsal studio then plug it into the desk, pan it left, rob the left speaker, put the vocals in the right speaker.

As with all things you should try it out first to check the sound. At home I use the TOneport UX2 into my Hifi for recording and it sounds valvelicous.

Check out this for an example. It's demo but guitars, bass and vocalswere done using the POD X3 modelling direct into Cubase. Drums from BFD, Keys are NI B4. Same with the second track.

Guitars: My Edwards LP108CD, Republican Resonator and an ancient sh1te Squire bass.

Match the rating of the amp with your speakers and you'll be fine. 2x300w (at 4ohm?) sounds like a guitar speaker destroyer though.

Guitarists are so comfortable with their excess of manhood that they do not need to compensate girth with big speakers and big strings. :P
