Its a mad world we live in.

A British advertising standards authority has to adjudicate if God exists or not!

When the Advertising Standards Authority began, it probably did not envisage ruling on that most fundamental of questions - does God exist?
The regulator's dilemma has been caused by an atheist bus currently being driven around Britain.

A Christian pressure group have asked the ASA to rule whether its slogan, "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life", can actually be substantiated.

If the regulator decides to investigate and says the slogan can't be proved it would effectively be saying God Exists.

Surely for them to argue against it would require them to substantiate their claim that god exists thus shooting themselves in the foot...

They don't have to adjudicate on whether God exists. They only have to decide if the statement "there's probably no God" is true or not. Or if it's overly inflammatory etc.

The obvious solution to me would be to suspend the ad until the people who placed the ad can back up their claims. Since there's no hard evidence on which to base an estimate of probability, imo the statement can't be proved true.... depending on your definition of God of course. If you think the Higgs Boson is God for instance, then you can reasonably estimate the probability of God's existence.

Why suspend the ad? The christians have been allowed to plaster crappy passages out of their book all over the place for years and it was never suspended because they couldn't prove it. They are kicking up a fuss about this because they know it makes people think, and we all know how organised religion views free thinking. Do they really find it so hard to believe that some people really just don't give a **** about religion of any sort?

Because they're making claims without evidence. Any religious/booze ads doing the same should be suspended too imo.

You're describing the core reason I don't buy into religions. None of it can be backed up. However, I don't feel adverts like the atheist one should be suspended. As much as I hate religion, the concept of free speech is enshrined in the constitution.

Of course lately, this world is just gone PC mad over fears of offending people. A sad state of affairs really that instead of being encouraged to think about things ourselves, we are pretty much told what we can and cannot think for fear of being outcast as a racist or similar labels.

People from all creeds, races & religions should really take a very long ****ing look at themselves and what offends them. The human race is turning into one big assortment of easily offended bitches.
