Guys, do we need to be suited and booted for both the registration day and 1st Feb, our first day??

Also, am I right in thinking we are in uniform all day and need our own clothes for evening times? The main staple of my wardrobe is rugby shirts (Ulster, Ireland, British and Irish Lions, various other clubs), can I wear these?? Or is it better just to get some plain t-shirts? I don't want to offend anyone, or get into trouble.

Yes, wearing a suit on both days in question is pretty much a necessity. Gives off a good first impression.

For your first four weeks in, you'll need your own clothes after the day is over. You'll want to be keeping these as neutral and non-offensive as possible. Any kind of Football shirt/Rugby shirt is generally frowned upon, you'd be best leaving these at home! Same goes for t-shirts with risque slogans, etc etc.

    Hope that helps.

Well?? Anyone else joining us?? Or is it too late for phone calls now? Some people for 28th December intake only seem to have got a couple of weeks notice, so don't give up hope.

na i reckon our intake is full, its usually 6 weeks notice, think dec 28th intake was exception to the rule as they were maybe unsure whether the intakes would be going ahead due to the budget hoopla.

only 31 days to go! :D

    COME ON THE GREENS!!!

It tells you in the training pack to contact recruitment if anything has changed. That's also the first thing they ask you, before offering you the job when you get "the call".

Griffer and I have got quite a bit of gear so far, just working off the starting garnerville thread, still lots more to get though!

anyone looking an iron, check out tesco, i got a great one for 20quid down from 45. i will also post a link in the coming days for "military socks" at an excellent price, i've ordered mine but want to see if they're any good before anyone else buys them!

I thought all we needed were socks, some single bed gear and a ream of paper.

I appear to be very very wrong... lol

So far I have, here goes:

shoe brush, tooth brush for boots, polish x2, iron, ironing board, starch tins x2, spray bottle for iron, tights/stockings for boots, silicon shoe shine pad, parcel tape x2 for uniform, padlocks x2, pen knife, wooden clothes hangers, black pens-lots, jotter pads, highlighters, cif, mr sheen, duster, army issue socks x5, black belt, suit covers x2, flip flops, washing powder/tablets, pillow case, sheet, duvet cover, sewing kit with black and white thread, hair spray, hair nets, hair clips and a hair dryer!

These are all things I got from the other posts! I am gonna be SKINT

laura you can leave out the toothbrush and silcone shoe shine pad, you wont need them, however get a good quality duster and a pack of 100% cotton wool balls. get an ironing cloth as the uniforms cant be touched directly by an iron, there are irons and ironing boards up there which could tide you over for the first week until you see them decide whether to get you're own.

panda.......oh dear.....assuming you are who i reckon you are, and not to put your name on the board! i'll make a copy of my list and give it to "your nurse" on sunday at football ;)

    make sure the pen knife
    a) is not a lock knife and
    b) has a blade less than 7.62cm (3inches) long. otherwise it's an offensive weapon and you will get into trouble!!
tooth brush for boots - not needed, use a good yellow duster on your number 1 boots and the shoe brush on your other pair, dont put a toothbrush near your number 1 boots or it will destroy the bull!!
they have ironing boards down there
silicon shoe shine pad - just polish them
Army socks will sweat your feet and give you blisters if you arent used to them, ordinary sports socks in black are just right
they provide you with a black belt for you uniform
drill staff know someone who will make alterations to your trousers for a few quid if you dont fancy taking them up yourself

It's better to have too much than too little! However, I did think that I had a little too much on my list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 Toben

    wot is a lock knife?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭MORRI

A lock knife is not a folding pocket knife and therefore it is illegal to carry around such a knife regardless of the length of the blade. A lock knife means a knife which is similar to a folding knife, in that there is a spring holding the blade closed. However, a lock knife has a mechanism which locks the blade in position when fully extended, the blade cannot be closed without that mechanism being released. A lock knife is not an offensive weapon per se (because these knives were made with a specific purpose in mind and not as a weapon). However, possession of a lock knife in a public place without reasonable excuse is an offence.
It is illegal to carry any sharp or bladed instrument in a public place (with the exception of a folding pocket knife, which has a blade that is less than 7.62 cm (3 inches)).
