I think the best way to sum it up is: if you go in expecting another COD4, you'll be disapointed. If you go in expecting a WW2 game, you will come away having played one of the best ever made.

I bought into the whole "omg its treyarch" thing, and I'm happy to say that the game completely proved me wrong. I enjoyed it immensely, all of the missions had a great pacing to them and the set pieces were superb. I've already started a new campaign on Veteran, which is something I never ever do with games unless they have really grabbed me in some way.

For anyone who is having doubts about purchasing it because of the developer or because its back to WW2 again, then you will really be missing out on a quality gaming experience.

Hi Jonski, im just playing on random server at the moment.
Add Efioanaes to your friends ingame :)
I meant to say there are a few really hateful features following on from cod4, the artillery and dogs are just silly imo.

Like you Jonski ive been a COD player since day one, remember heat of battle mod for the first ever cod? great mod :)
Im glad to see a ww2 COD again, dont know much about trayarch except i heard they fooked up cod3 and kept it on console only which is enough to make me want to puke but as some have said already, dont let that put you off, they have done a fine job on this title.

Yeah , the accuracy of some of the big so called support guns is a bit overkill aswell .

So which would you pick for online play cod4 or waw?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

Played the game today at a lan cafe with a few buddies and enjoyed it.

Especially co-op campaign mode, it was cool and some of the scripted scenes were awesome.
Then had a go at nazi zombies and had a blast playing that with 3 others :D

Only thing that annoyed me about multiplayer was the hilarious and retarded 'dogs' you get, in the place of the helicopter.

    Its just so ....dumb

    COD4 by a mile.

Actually they are the same game pretty much. Different weapons and perks...

Have to say - I think its rubbish.

Playing on the second hardest difficulty - I like a challenge but the amount of times I've been randomly killed by grenades is just frustratingly stupid. Also, its just too linear and the re-spawning enemies annoys me.

    Generic dumbed-down consoley shooter.

Have only briefly played SP so I won't really pass judgment on that but it does seem good.

MP is quite excellent, especially in the maps on the Eastern Front. They look spectacular.

The only thing horribly broken in the game is the spawning system - quite literally every 2nd spawn whenever I'm playing plonks me right in the middle of a group of enemies, it's so incredibly frustrating.

    360 version:
Haven't played that much multiplayer. As far as I've seen, the spawns are broken and the boot camp playlist doesn't work properly. Lvl 1 vs Lvl 50. Completely fair.

The campaign was better than I expected it to be. Not as good as CoD 4 but I enjoyed it. The main issue I had with the campaign is the grenade spam.

Stay behind cover and you get grenades thrown in at you. Stand still and get grenades thrown at you while being shot. Move around and walk into grenades. Sometimes I survived due to pure luck.

The epic feeling of the final missions in the USSR campaign was pretty cool though. :pac:

Played a lot of MP tonight. I have the say the game is brilliant, much better then COD2 ever was. I don't see the point comparing it to COD4 as they're different genres (I much prefer the WW2 theme) and I honestly think World at War has a distinctly different feel despite a lot of people saying it's only a skin job. It has a genuinely gritty feel to it, COD4 is decidedly arcade in comparison. The levels are awesome, playing the maps based on Battle for Seelow Heights and the fighting around the Reichstag are exceptionally impressive in my opinion. A lot of work has gone into this game and I honestly think it's an out and out winner for the franchise, not just Treyarch.

That said I love my WW2 shooters so maybe I'm a bit biased, I did love playing COD4 but I rather wished it was set in the traditional era as well. I have to give the SP a proper go yet, but to be honest I'm not pushed. I thought the SP in COD4 was pretty crap apart from a few select missions in Eastern Europe, I buy FPS titles for their MP and judge them on that. If I had to criticize anything, after playing the game extensively online the last 2 days, it would be:

    1) The spawning at certain times
    2) The Sound is good, but weapon sounds are a little tinny and small for my liking. The worst is the STG44, it sounds like a Scorpion gun...
    3) I don't like the Dogs, they're just annoying, nor do I like Martyrdom, I wish they'd left it out. Instead of the dogs, something like a blanket bombing like in Company of Heroes would be cool, and infinitely more realistic. Even something like a platoon of CPU controlled soldiers to fight on your side until their death and briefly make the sides totally uneven would be more fun to both use and fight against.

I don't particularly care much for the Pacific side of things either but that's more because of my personal interest in European military history and a relative disinterest in the war in the Pacific.

As for the comment earlier about the graphics being unbelievably bad, that's the most blatant bit of treyarch-bangwagon-hating I've seen yet. This shot doesn't do it justice but I took it in the middle of an MP game, I was astounded by how dark, atmospheric and convincing the map/backdrop was.

All in all a top notch game, I love it.

I enjoyed it, alot of people seem to be takin it way too seriously. I enjoyed the flame throwers and that sniper rifle on the level where you kill the nazi high up dude (russian level) that will pop peoples legs/arms/heads off :) i recently (within the last week :o ) discovered the zombie level so have been gettin loads of craic from that, think the highest level i have gotten is like 8 or 9

The graphics to me are almost like a cod 3.5 as in cod 4 was amazin and cod 3 tame in comparison but i didnt mind, playin it was fun and got my monies worth from it

    360 btw

    My opinion(PS3):

Its ok, but the dogs idea Is quote annoying as they respawn. With the chopper in cod4, it was either it survived, or it didn't

The artillery strikes are USELESS. If you have a recon plane, and use the artillery, you're better off aiming a mile away from the enemy, because maybe then they will be in the strike zone.

SP? I've found it quite gripping. Its very hard on veteran though (but I'm crap tbh).
The co-op idea is ok, but I think the "co-op" challenges are very good. You can level up your MP rank in co-op mode. I have found one disappointment though. In certain levels where there is a cutscene at the start (ie. Their land their blood) you all see through one guys eyes, then you morph into 4 people, and you get pushed sideways.

All-in-all, replace the dogs with like 2 special extra perks which are selectable during create a class, one for vehicles and one normal one. And for artillery? How about a throwable mortars instead of grenades for you and your teammates for 30 seconds?

Got it over Christmas, single player is not as good as COD4, multiplayer is fun, but COD4 was better. 2 major gripes online with COD WAW:
    1. The sound is C - R - A - P.
    2. The stupid "Call in the Dogs", I HATE THOSE F'ING DOGS!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭Feelgood

One word for you - ZOMBIES....

Bloody brilliant, so simplistic yet a completely addictive game. Its worth just buying COD5 for that alone.

I seriously hope they realise a dedicated Zombies game soon, best game I have played in a while...

I prefer COD4 it is a fantastic game. This ones tired in my opinion.
Zombie bit is entertaining for about 20 minutes though.

This is one of the worst games I have ever played online. The sheer amount of bugs that Tryarch have managed to put into a working engine is insane. If you don't believe me Google "Call of duty" and any of the following keywords

    "No or bad challenge"
    "Server authentication failure"

    or even

    "Online problems".

I can safely say for the rest of my life, no matter what the game I will never ever buy off of that developer again.

I got CoD5 for Christmas, but still haven't completed the single player. I find I'm still playing CoD4 more. I suppose I find CoD4 way more challenging when it comes to multiplayer. The zombie mode could be good fun, but again I play a bit of Left4Dead so am in no rush to try it out just yet.

It's still not becomming any clearer given that people are still not saying what format they are playing it on . I am still enjoying it on the PC , found a good server with the different game modes rotated and having a blast .

Well I hate it on PC (anyway I could rarely ever connect online due to issues on NTL's side apparently...) and what Treyarch did to the Call of Duty series is unforgivable IMO.

I haven't played it on console for the simple reason that, again IMO, FPS games shouldn't be played with a gamepad.
