Oh, another spectacular saving I made ... still can't quite believe this one! The game DVD Scene It of Harry Potter, which we priced in H*mleys at €49 3 days ago, I got for £6.97 in Sainsburys .....

On the day that I found something cheaper in Harrods I came to the conclusion that Hamley's was a ripoff. I can't imagine their Dundrum store being any better.

We have been up to Enniskillen and Omagh shopping a few times this year, but the wife wanted to go further up into the north to see if the shops were any bigger.
So we headed of to Derry (from Galway) at 7am and arrived at about 11ish because the roads were very bad with the ice it took a little longer than expected.

She said the shopping was much better but still not what she had expected as she has been over to the UK a few times and misses the BIG shopping centers that i hate so much.

She wanted to know if it would be worth the trip to Belfast next time, any body help her make her mind up please as she is starting to drive me mad.

WE still got a few things in Derry and overall was a good day (if a long) out.

My lad got a few things like PS3 games were £20 and €60 down here.
Chart DVDs £6.99 instead of the €17/€20 here
    Magazines were also cheaper.

I got some CAT work boots for £50 at Barrats shoe shop, same thing down here €135

My wife filled the car, well what else did i expect.

We did a full shop at Sainsburys in Derry and was very happy with that,
The car was very FULL on the way home.

Please let me know if Belfast would be worth the trip.
    Thanks.

You poor guy :D Aiming to please the wife!

Ah belfast isn't much better - It has Victoria Square but it's nowhere like London / Manchester.

It's got a lot of the shops though but they aren't massively big.

Really dissappointed with my latest shopping outing up north :( - Well moreso with my own planning and execution:

Booked a night in the Radisson SAS in Belfast for me/missus for Sunday 28th, lookin to shop all day yesterday as I didn't fancy the circus that Newry potentially could've been, and saw it all there last time too.

Was aware that most of the banks were not open to exchange money having taken a load of Euro cash up north to get the 97p that M&S quoted me last wednesday, only to find them offering 88p(!!!!) - To be sure I had called on 2 seperate occasions to get a total conversion amount on a €:£ sum. So I went to the post office and got 89.8p or something as a last resort, as i didn't want to take the same out of the wall again in Sterling at 92p or so, and have to carry it all around. Would've used C Card but it was maxed, and not paid off yet due to my own laziness.

What ensued was a really frustrating half day (spent first 2.5 hours trying to find a camera that Jessops told me they had in stock via phone, only to disappoint me in person - No luck) of trapesing through the crowds around streets I didn't know, and didn't really have that great a set of shops. Didn't get anywhere near as much as I wanted to, but a good few changes of clothes nonetheless.

Ended up stopping in Sainsbury's in Sprucefield at 9pm and trying to eek out whatever value I could on stuff like Miller x 15's 2-for-£15 deal. Got 150 bottles! The bill was £215/€240, which is actually worse than the deal I got in PO, unusually enough for Sainsburys (offering 89.5p when spot rate is 97p is a bit ).

Ah well - learning experience n all that - Still made a killing n suppose I only really lost out on £50-60 in the For-Ex.

    H*mleys

On a Bargain Alert thread, you should know better.

Shops In North now don't need to offer a good rate for ROI shopers as they know they will go up anyway, they only needed to get them up there pre Xmas.
There are costs them money to change the ccy back to GBP so I'd say use your CC going forward.

I was in Newry for the first time yesterday and thought it was crap tbh. Myself and my girlfriend spent our entire time rushing from Newry to The Outlet to Banbridge and back again (several times). Traffic was thankfully not a problem and it took just a few minutes to go between them. We found that the shops are well used to people from ROI travelling up and have adapted their business strategies as such. So this €1 = £1 lark is a joke, as they have just increased their prices in the shop. We could clearly see in many 1 to 1 shops that only people from ROI were shopping there and their prices (despite the glaring banners all around the shop attempting to instill financial benefits) were not that attractive at all. Don't get me wrong there are bargains to be had, but my partner and I had Euro cash on us and found that most of the shops were offering appalling conversion rates. Fat Face in the outlet for example was (just yesterday) charging €1.34 for £1. So before buying anything we went to the Bureau de Change in the Buttercrane centre and got 93p for our euro before heading back out to the Outlet. We also found that there was a lot of rubbish in the shops too.

I am not denying that there are bargains to be had, I could see that there were but I think we need to be more careful about making a trip up North. I would recommend you make sure that what you want to buy is available first, and possibly reserving items before you leave, bring sterling (or use cards). I went up to buy a TV and came back without anything. They have a 10 week waiting list for some TVs and many were simply not available. Also Currys exchange rate in the shop is 85p!! (was there yesterday). Then again Newry isn't that big of a place, and in all fairness over the last few weeks has had to service locals and half of Dublin (if not the country) so understandably this is going to impact the shopping experiences for everyone. They are simply not able to keep up with the levels of demand.

    In summary...
Know what you want and that is is available before you head up
Know the shop's conversion rate (phone ahead on the way) if you are using Euro
If you are not using Euro, know where you can get your cash changed without them taking half of it. (I got 93p per euro in Buttercrane SC BdC), other places offered me far less, well below 90p.
Don't let marketing ploys suck you in to thinking you are getting a bargain just because you spent a few hours in the car.

All in all I think you will make a saving by travelling up North but plan ahead and give yourself limits on what you think is a good deal on certain items. The way I look at it, your time spent travelling, fuel, etc all amount to something and if you don't take this on board on just head up there without any prior research you could end up regretting it.

I suppose my argument would be, considering the time/effort/cost of travelling up there and the item you are reffering to being unavailable, is it worth it. Newry is not able to keep up with the levels of demand, so by looking in Irish shops, doing a price comparison and being willing to make the trip up does not automatically mean you will succeed.

Phone ahead and reserve, especially on larger expensive items.

I think you have learnt a valuable lesson. Always pay with a credit card or use sterling cash. Accepting euro is all about robbing the freestaters blind as they are often too lazy to use a foreign currency. They are being made pay dearly for their laziness.

Unfortunately the banks down here will also bend their own citizens over by offering the same (was quoted 88p last week by BOI), so ATM or plastic is the obvious choice ftw. I just found myself in a bind n didn't wanna be carrying €/£2.5k around. It was M&S's fook-up that left me hanging out to dry.

On the "robbing the free-staters" thing; I was in JeanScene (£=€1)and put a £20 top on the counter. I was paranoid (I think rightly so??) that the guy behind the counter was deperately trying to get me to say something so he could make a guess on what currency I was planning to pay in before ringing it up. He asked for £15 saying there was a (unmarked) discount and I then spoke and said I would pay €15 in Euro, to which he got all hum n haw-ish about. Was funny (or maybe not). I'm probably nuts.

Is it easy to find given last time I was in Belfast about 4 years ago I got lost coming back to Dublin :o
Reading a bit on this is my best bet besides smyths to go to Banbridge or lisburn- how much further are they- are the shops good up there? Any help appreciated

I just cringed reading your post, your cc is maxed out, you spent €240 in order to feel like you got a bargain on buying 150 bottles miller which works out €1.60 a bottle!!
you admit it was a worse deal then you got in PO.
Throw in hotel & petrol cost & your trip to save a fortune backfired (& you didnt get the camera you wanted)
and we're meant to be in a recession

Perhaps I didn't give you the lines clearly enough to read between:

    - Credit Card has a limit of €400 (a relic), which was used on hotel, nice romantic meal on Sunday night, presents prior to travelling north.
    - €240 was total bill in Sainsburys. Miller was £75 for 150 bottles. You obviously need this forum badly if you think anyone would pay €1.60 a bottle up north. I probably won't have to even think about an off licence until Easter. Got a lot more shopping for the £140 balance.
    - I paid for shopping in Sainsbury's in £, as I was savvy enough to be able to do the maths on the .5p difference there and then.
    - I'll get the camera online, delivered, for about 40% what I'd pay for it on Grafton st.
    - Petrol was 35 quid return. Per time, I saved more than that taking a dump yesterday morning.

I'm gonna have to insist on your head being out of your smart arse for any discussion going forward.

Well that post makes it more clear, for your camera use pixmania.com, can get 48 hour delivery & if you are a member of pigsback.com you get piggy points for buying on pixmania (make sure you use pixmania link on pigsback) you can then use your pigsback vouchers for restaurant vouchers etc...

Kudos on your magnanimity in the face of my cattyness. ;) I'm in work for a few hours today after three 5-hour night sleeps back to back!

    Will check your tips out!

EDIT: Pixmania looks pretty pricey compared to some of the online UK-based retailers, or same with physical stores (i.e. Jessops) up north.

Heard today there was a three mile tailback to reach Enniskillen yesterday, I am only guessing Newry will be the same especially with the schools closed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,283 ✭✭✭Rowley Birkin QC

Was in Enniskillen today for a few hours, headed up around 2:30pm, traffic was grand until about 2km outside Enniskillen. Got in a bit closer and used free parking about 15 mins walk from Erneside, bought nothing in Erneside.

Headed up the town to Boots, they were giving .97p for €1. Got 2x Brylcreem, 1 x Fusion Shaving gel, 10 x Fusion Blades and 1 x Fusion Razor for the grand total of €26.

Picked up some stuff in DV8 and Burton too on the CC. Traffic was mental at this stage so we went for a lovely Indian meal just off the main street, came to £32 or €47.90, very glad of the CC at that point.

On to Tesco then. Litre of Smirnoff £14, Litre of Jim Beam £21, 12 Miller £8, 24 Condoms £10.50...Giggidy.

Grand drive home then after leaving off the traffic by going for the bite to eat. Will be back again.

Newry was an absolute zoo today.

    +1:D

Still got there from D15 ( across the M50 and to Quays Car park ) in 1hr 25mins so pretty easy trip.

Left D15 at 10.15am - across the M50 and out onto the M1. A tad busy approaching Newry with the usual traffic and the single lane reduction due to the roadworks ( Basically, the last 2-3km took approx 20mins ). Getting a car space at that time took me another 15mins although her indoors was out of the car like a bullet and raping Sainsburys by the time I was parked up.

ADVICE: Sit and wait for a space; dont bother driving around like a gob****e. The spaces will come ;)

Again, good deals still to be had. Marginal price increases evident when compare to pre-Xmas but the ever weakening pound offsets this I would say.

Walk, dont drive, elsewhere. Buttercrane parking mental during the afternoon.

    Enjoy :)

Rip off merchants!! That should have been about €34 at yesterdays rate...

They'll still be charging us higher rates even when it hits parity or higher at this rate. Greedy feckers!

Just back from Enniskillen. 3.5 hours from Limerick approx. Went up via Claremorris and cut across country to Manorhamilton just when I got to the Dublin / Sligo road, thus avoiding Sligo town. Major traffic getting into EK. Took an hour from the edge of town. Came home via Cavan, Athlone, Gort. Took almost 4 hours but it was dark so there is not much in it.

Tip for today: When parking in the ASDA carpark, par as close to the exit to the public street as you can and reverse into the parking spot. The traffic getting out was mental and we were parked down near the back. After 20 minutes of not moving I reversed back into the spot and walked up to Curries (luckily it was close) The guy in Curries told me they have been sending trucks across to their Sligo branch to pick up all the stock from there as nothing is selling (I wonder why)

Anyway, back to EK, lots of shops are within walking distance M&S, Dunnes, Tesco, Asda, Lidl. There ar lots of smaller shops around the area too but I didn't get to them, due to traffic delays.

We did groceries in Asda, a few prices, Pringles 71p, Coke 2L was 80p I think. Steam Iron £3.37, sandwich toaster £5, weightwatchers biscuits 88p rather than €1.65 at home. 4 pint glasses for £2, kids clothes £2 / £3 /£4

If you are into weightwatchers food, like the missus, its waaaay cheaper AND there is more variety.

Black Grapes: 2 punnets for £3
    Punnet mushrooms £0.63
Supernoodles £0.44, think they cost about €1 around here.

There is an awful lot of stuff thats now about 40% less than Dunnes down south. I don't think anything costs more at the moment.

This was our first visit and the next time we will be hitting the north earlier in the day.

Its a long trip up but if things stay as they are I will be going every couple of months armed with more pricing info. on what stuff has the biggest difference and longest shelf / freezer life etc.

Word of advice folks.... stay clear of newry unless you are going up first thng in the morning,i'm relatively close(dundalk) and take the back roads in and around the city but for anyone not familiar with it you are in for a nightmare. traffic was chaotic especially around the caparks of quays and buttercrane and on my journey home there were tailback of about 3 miles from the roundabout in newry to the carrickdale hotel.once you are in the jam there is no exit on the motorway.

Imho for the amount of time spent looking for parking in newry you are best travelling about twenty mins further to lisburn or portadown, even to belfast, even better bargains there and less queues and hassle.plus a lot of shops are displaying £ for € further north, plus a sat nav might help to avoid the awful bottleneck and tailbacks as the M1 enters newry. head for forkhill and bypass newry from there

The Golden Rule now seems to be arrive no later than 9am.

    I'd say so.

The Golden Rule now seems to be arrive no later than 9am.

Or arrive late if you are just doing groceries. EK was quietening around 6pm yesterday, my guess is that this is because all the smaller shops Curries etc. close at 6pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭whatsupdoc?

So long as the Eur/Gbp rate stays over 90p, I'd guess the traffic will remain mental for the next few months as more and more people start going up.

Definitely not. We were coming out of Newry yesterday at 5pm and the traffic was still mental coming into the city.
