Do you have a wifi connection?

A USB stick is probably the easiest. I got a 2gb one off ebay for €10 inc shipping recently.

The PS3 reads memory stick or usb drive and looks for the PS3 mainfolder and your relevant subfolder as seen below. NB.All subfolders and PS3 main folder must be in uppercase.

    [Memory Stick/USB Drive]
    -PS3
    -VIDEO
    -PHOTO
    -MUSIC
-SAVEDATA (put your save games in here)
-UPDATE (put your PS3 firmware update in this folder)
-THEME (put your PS3 themes in here)

eg.So if you just want to be able to use a SD card to say show your photos when you want, you would want to put all of the photos in the PHOTO folder, do the same for music and videos. However, you can use subfolders if you want but you will need to view it by using the Display All option on the PS3.

On the PS3, go into your photo or music area and highlight the ms/usb drive and hit your Triangle button and choose Display All, you can now browse all of the folders on the drive/memory card.

NB: SAVEDATA, UPDATE & THEME subfolders need to be created within the PS3 mainfolder for the PS3 to view them. Unlike the video, music and photos.

Patches and updates for PS3 games can only be downloaded from the PS3 that the game is being played on.
You can't download them from developer or Sony directly, presumably for security reasons and more than likely because most patches are online related issues and you would be connected to internet anyway.
