Best route Dublin to Knock (Mayo)

I will be travelling from Dublin to knock in a couple of days. Previously I would have gone M4/N4 to Longford, N5 to Charlestown and down the N17 but it has been quite a while since I have travelled this route and I recall the N5 was poor and slowed the journey significantly.

Would appreciate from those of you that do the route more frequently, with the improvements in the road to Athlone, is it better to go on the N6 to Athlone and on from there, or any other suggested route?

I'd still use the N5 route - the N6 is good to Athlone yeah, but the linking roads back north aren't anywhere as good. The N6 is keeping you far too far south.

I'd second this route as well. The road via Athlone as far as Roscommon is good but after that it is rough at best.
