It only counts if your jigsaw globe gets knocked over.

Clearly , an observation on my part.

How can people like this still exist?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_Society#Organizational_Challenges

Clearly the fact nobody has fallen off the edge would convince them its a sphere..

If you read more about it you'll find they usually have an explanation for questions like that. It's really funny because the Earth was proven to be a sphere hundreds of years ago with very simple experiments. Even looking at the curvy horizon should tell you something is amiss with the flat earth theory.

I don't care what they believe in as long as it doesn't impact me or they don't want it taught as a legitimate scientific theory in schools. What really troubles me is what the hell is the motivation for believing something like that? It's not like it undermines any religious beliefs in any serious way so what's the problem with accepting what is clearly scientific fact? It seems to me they picked a stance and then bitterly defend it no matter what in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. That's all well and good if we're talking about religion or some other intangible unproveable concept but this is just a plain physical fact. It's not even like evolution where you can't see it in action. You can actually fly into space and observe that the Earth is not flat.

I wish the people who are so zealous about defending the indefensible would divert that attention to something more useful.

The Greeks knew the earth was a sphere 2,400 years ago. They could calculate the equator correctly too.

A number of years ago when Shell had to dispose of the Brent Spar Oil Rig, they were going to drag it out to sea. Environmentalists were up in arms over it.

As a joke I wrote a letter to the Irish Times suggesting that Shell should tow it out to sea and simply drop it over the edge. signed The Flat Earth Society. It got published. :D

About a week later they had a load letters inquiring about the whereabouts of the flat earth society. :D

Flat Earth is a state of mind, not a geological fact.

Have to pay for it because it predates the internet. There definately was a letter on the topic so I will choose to belive RTTHs.

Gladly. The Earth is flat. We all know this. If the Earth was a sphere, then the people on the bottom would fall off.

Sure, people can take photos from space, circumnavigate the "globe" but we all know, inherently, that the Earth is under our feet, is flat. It has to be. Otherwise there'd be no up or down.

So they are just arguing their believes even though its ludicrous. Is this just a society of trolls?

Trolls traditionally live under bridges. Bridges are built on the ground. The ground a bridge is built on is flat. And another name for the ground, is the Earth.

    You do the math.

Yeah I know. I was hoping somebody here might have an account or access to an account. I'd love to see it.

Are you trolling/posting tongue in cheek or are you being serious? I don't want to bother my arse writing a big long reply about how flawed your reasoning is if you're only messing. Thanks.

I don't know what to say to this, I sincerely hope this is your sense of humour and I'm just too tired to get it, please let it be so :)

Ok for a start you say "The ground a bridge is built on is flat". The curvature of the Earth may not affect your calculations drastically if it's a reasonably small bridge but you fire a laser level across any bridge more than a couple of hundred metres and you'll start to see some deviation.

The ground is effectively flat for most of our daily business but the Earth is not flat.

    Please tell me you're trolling.

I'm a little bit offended actually at the tone of condescnsion exhibited towards Flat Earthers on this thread. Plus, the flagrant use of the globular smiley :) is an attempt to get a rise out of me?

On Flat Earth message boards, we use the smiley :] It demonstrates that humour can be delivered by a non-globular ie flat icon.

Yes its trolling, do you not get the irony? thread about a ludicrous topic and some poster agrees with it? Come on, your making it too easy:D

It's late. That's my excuse for taking the bait. Plus it's not like there's nobody out there that believes this stuff so it's not that far fetched that someone on boards would.

:| <- That's the real flat earth smiley btw

    it predates the internet.
Which only got me thinking: Is the Internet flat?

May be due to many things. Perhaps it is the laser that curves and not the earth. We all know that light bends when moving through a medium interface. Air is a medium, therefore the laser radiation bends when it moves through it. The geography of the land has ups and down and hills and mountains, but ultimately, it is a vast expanse like a carpet.

The ground is effectively flat for most of our daily business but the Earth is not flat.

I'm glad we agree on some common ground, but it looks like you are unable to grasp the whole concept?

    Please tell me you're trolling.

It's quite evident from below that I am not.
