Harrington is actually a top class performer in an international sport. Thus he wins.
    Except golf isn't a sport.

A soccer player. He plays centre midfield for City. You might not be a soccer fan. I just happen to like all types of sports.

Joe Gamble?!?!?! Hahahahahaha. He isn't even the best League of Ireland player.

Where's Tadhg Kennelly btw? Far more successful than most of the muppets on that list.

Just didn't make the cut but a great sportsperson in this country no doubt. I am no Kingdom fan but

I want to win an All-Ireland with Kerry

Great quote. He passes the big money in Oz to get back to his roots.

Another ignorant comment here, and totally unfair to Joe Gamble. If he went to another country in Europe lets say a team in France would he be a poor player just because he didn't play in England?

I will have you know Gamble could easily be playing in France now but he wants to get into Champions League with the Rebel Army.

Going by the fact you think Joe Gamble is a 'phenomenal' player I can only deduce you're from Cork and are of course no fan of the Kingdom.

Lol no he doesn't. He's already made a fortune and is approaching 30, which is when most AFL players start to retire anyway.

harrington gets my vote, but there's a few dubious names there OP

Well I can only assume you have an anti-Cork City agenda because you don't think Gamble is a highly talented player.

I would like to know who is better than Joe? Paul Keegan? Gary Dempsey? Gary Deegan? Stephen O'Donnell? I honestly can't think of a better midfielder. Colin Healy would be the best player if it wasn't for his injuries, as he would be playing for a top European team if he had stayed clear.

France is wat below the English standard of football.. the French 1st diviaion is about Championship level. And the Eircom league is League two level at best

He's already tried and failed at some top, and not so top clubs tbh

Ok that is wrong. The top teams in League of Ireland would be mid-table Championship sides no doubt about it in my mind.

Sure teams like Bray would probably struggle in League One and just be upper-table average sides in League Two but there are a good 4 teams who would more than hold their own in the English Championship.

However that is for another time.

He's already tried and failed at some top, and not so top clubs tbh

Who would this be? And while the point could be made it could also be said to be irrelevant. Kevin Doyle wasn't even the best player in the LOI, and now he is the best player by some distance in the English Championship.

    Anti-Cork agenda? Me? Never!

You have on the list of Greatest Sportmen/Women. There is no way he is greater than Richard Dunne, Robbie Keane, Stephen Ireland, Kevin Kilbane, Shay Given, Damien Duff or any of the other Irish national team players.

If anyone has a bias going on it's you.
I would like to know who is better than Joe? Paul Keegan? Gary Dempsey? Gary Deegan? Stephen O'Donnell? I honestly can't think of a better midfielder.

Ah but you never said midfielder. You have him basically as the best League of Ireland player. Up until two weeks ago Keith Fahey was a mile better but now he's in England.

Brian Murphy is better, and probably half of the Bohs defence too given their defensive record.
Colin Healy would be the best player if it wasn't for his injuries, as he would be playing for a top European team if he had stayed clear.

    Good God you're delusional.

Are you from Cork? And be honest.

Harrington also gets my vote,im not a golf fan at all but it is well known he is one of the best in the world.surprised by kevin doyle being included, wouldnt have been my choice at all, wouldnt classify him as world class myself but thats my opinion. Also never heard of Joe Gamble:o

I don't know half of those people. Does that make me unpatriotic?

Keith Fahey a mile better than Gamble? I've heard it all. Fahey is overrated, and this will be shown now with Birmingham City. Sure he's got the talent but he just doesn't have the heart of a player like Gamble. He hasn't got what it takes and I can see him in the Sporting Fingal team within a year and a half.

Brian Murphy is a very good goalkeeper, but I just felt Gamble merited a place over him tbh.

I honestly believe Colin Healy had everything to be a real genuine top class player.

And I live in Dublin because my parents moved here, but my heart is in Cork.

Oh and Stephen Ireland hasn't proved anything yet. Perhaps in a years time when I make another poll he could make the list, but only if he continues his current form.

I don't watch much of the English league but from what I know Duff is not playing as well as he did with Blackburn.

No. It makes you not interested in all the sports from where half of the people you don't recognise are selected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,159 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

    my heart is in Cork.

That's all I needed to hear. And now we know why the likes of Gamble and O'Hailpin made the list when they aren't even near the best players in their sports.

The Colin Healy thing still has me laughing.

...., but my heart is in Cork.

And you included a Kerry footballer in your poll?

Why are you constantly posting in bold? It's not necessary and very annoying.

Anyway, as for the poll itself - two soccer players, both of whom happen to have played for Cork City. Bit dubious that, no? If you wanted to include Ireland's best footballers where's the likes of Liam Brady or Johnny Giles. The pair you've picked aren't even remotely in the same class.

Let's look at some of the others:

    - Kenny Egan, Olympic silver medallist is there, but Michael Carruth, Olympic gold medallist isn't.
    - Seán Óg Ó hAilpín appears to have had a sex change, but even forgetting about that for the moment, he's not even the best GAA player to come out of Cork, never mind the country. Where are Cristy Ring or Jimmy Barry-Murphy in that list?
    - Colm Cooper has 3 All-Irelands to his name. That barely gets you noticed in Kerry ffs. Where are Pat Spillane or Páidí Ó Sé in the list. Btw, I should mention that I don't even like Gaelic football or hurling and I can come up with better candidates.

Judging from your list I suspect that you're quite young and have no real clue about Ireland's sporting history. So how about you go off and do some homework and then come back to us with a proper list?

Well we will never know anyway so its a moot point. But let me ask how do you know he didn't have that capability? I think you are drastically passing over Colins injury problems.

Now you've got 50 posts I definitely think you should request access to Soccer. You will be a breath of fresh air to the League of Ireland debates.

EDIT: Why can't I thank you Zaph?! WHY?!?!?!

The OP needs to be here two months to get access to soccer forum

And won't last long there :p

Sorry if I offended you but in my opinion these are great Irish sports people of the current time.
