I never trusted this guy from the beginning with all his BS election manifesto. After he promised about pulling back on military power has now concluded that the United States should maintain the “strongest military on the planet”,

Obamas rise was built on his opposition to the Iraq war, delivered this message that could have well have come from George W Bush.

Mr Obama said: “To ensure prosperity here at home and peace abroad, we all share the belief we have to maintain the strongest military on the planet.

“We have to bring the full force of our power, not only military but diplomatic and political, to deal with the threats,” he said, also vowing that the US would stand with India

With the responsibilities of office just seven weeks away, he added that his administration was “absolutely committed to eliminating the threat of terrorism”.

Looks like things have not changed at all from George Bush.

Maintaining the strongest military on the planet and pulling out of Iraq aren't mutually exclusive.

Wasn't his stance that they'd actually try diplomacy as opposed to reacting to everything with military force?

    Wait, it's runny, never mind.....

Note his use of the phrase "the planet".

He's just got his first military briefing about the aliens.

Edit: Cue the usual "I for one welcome our new lizard overlords."

I doubted him the minute he came out with this clanger "Isreal is a good friend of Israel". Americans can't do international issues

Exactly right :) Thankfully some people can see that!

Without a massive military America would instead have massive unemployment. As a President what would you rather be remembered for?

Bit childish to think the army would be reduced during the "war on terror". You do remember Obama promising a troop surge in Afghanistan don't you.

He is dealing with those matters, he has already promised employment for 2.5 Million Americans, now we see where.

America is just one big giant bullseye, they have no choice but to maintain their military powers. He isn't declaring war ffs!

If you ever read his election manifesto he clearly stated that he wanted to drastically increase military funding. The media simply focused on his policy on the Iraq war. Time magazine did a piece on this specific topic about a year ago if you want to look it up.

What exactly did you expect? You want him to go and decomission thousands of billion dollar aircrafts and arms and put hundreds of thousands of soldiers out of jobs?? Get a clue man, of course he's going to maintain their military power, they are the "superpower". It doesen't mean he's gonna attack half the ****ing world.

Bullsh1t posts like this don't belong in AH, in fairness they don't belong anywhere...

"Speak gently, but carry a big stick"

Indeed, Obama would do well to maintain military spending. The US military is not seen as invincible now, whereas it was 8 years ago. Keeping spending on various strategic weapons provides not only jobs but has massive repercussions 20/30 years down the line that no-one can predict

e.g. Military programs kept in place by the Ford/Carter presidencies in the 70's such as the B1 bomber program, Trident missile system and submarine programs, as well as providing research for stealth technology, even when it was seen as foolish to be spending money on such programs, these all helped to bankrupt the Soviet Union as they tried to keep up with america in military spending in the late 80's when these programs bore fruit.

RunToDaHills you don't trust anybody. I've read your Conspiracy Theory forum malarkey.

What did you expect. Obviously the US would maintain the strongest military on the planet. How naiive do you have to be to suggest that because Obama was elected that he'd start discharging armed forces personel and dismantling weapons. They ARE in the middle of a 'war on terror' you know.

Because there are some good ones on boards!! :p

Anyway, I have to agree with those that are wondering why you're surprised. I completely agree that his campaign was a bunch of hype and Americans should prepare to be disappointed, but he never said he was going to get rid of the military. And it isn't like America retaining the most powerful military in the world is difficult...honestly, who's the competition? He's just talking out of his ass, so what?

Ah damn it! I was hoping Obama would surrender to the terrorists, welcome Bin Laden with open arms and help Al Qaeda implement their policies of barbaric, medieval Islamofascism worldwide. I was even going to give up drinking and grow a beard. :(

He has said a lot of employment will come from his commitment to researching alternative fuels.

I don't see anything wrong with his comment. It's simply acknowledging that if America lets other countries gain military control of the planet, things could be very dangerous.

And although I'm against the war in Iraq and all that, and that America has been too quick to use their military in the past....I do think a world without America as the military leader would be a lot more dangerous than it is now.
