Check out Memories, 3 short film collection with some of the best anime talent out there.

Perfect Blue has been mentioned - great thriller. Although Satoshi Kon's other film - sci-fi thriller Paprika - is astonishing.

I'd recommend all Studio Ghibli too - if you are looking for action and sci-fi, Nausicca of the Valley of the Winds and Laputa: Castle in the Sky are good Ghibli choices.

All the good ones have been suggested so I would like to just add Street Fighter II The Animated Movie.

The only Street Fighter movie ever made...

    I myself loved Princess Mononokee.
But then again I am a bit left of centre:)

just an FYI, manga refers to the comics, anime is commonly used to refer to japanese animation

    Yeah, try Studio Ghibli movies:

    Some good ones:

    Spirited Away
    Princess Mononoke
    Howl's Moving Castle

You might also check out Paprika

Head over to the manga/anime forum and do a search for what people over there recommend as good anime movies

+1+1 for Legend of the Overfiend, the entire series of movies. Not every ones cup of tea and in my opinion very misunderstood.Sure there's loads of tenticle rape in it but the story is an epic spiritual journey that makes more sense than the whole Bible.
Always liked Fist of the Northstar,Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing is amazing and Devilman is good for an olde laugh

Agree with this, really is the only street fighter movie.

Nothing mentioned will top Akira though.

The two Patlabor films are excellent.

The first one plays out like a mystery detective film and the second one plays out like a political thriller and they both have big kick ass robots in them.

+1 Ghost in the shell (Love this one. The art, music and themes)

+1 Legend of the Overfiend (which im surprised to see) but be aware its pretty f***ed up e.g demons raping women and they exploding as the demon comes

wish i could give more but i mostly watch series.

Street Fighter Alpha animated movie was also excellent, very japanese of itself, and not quite as good as the SF2 one, but still quite excellent.

Also all of the Studio Ghibli films, Patlabour films (especially the series, they were incredible), Ghost in a Shell (and its series, Stand Alone Complex, also excellent), and the Evengelion films.
