Blu-Ray Overkill

Just seen an ad for Tommy Tiernan's new Bovinity DVD and it's available in Blu-Ray. For feck sake who takes a stand-up show and say's,
"You know what? I can't subject myself to this in standard definition. I need to see all the effects in glorious HD!"

People said the same about DVDs...and yet, a few years later, DVD is more than a "must-have"-it's standard at this stage. Likewise, in 4-5 years, all TVs will have to be HD, and all DVD players will be HD, and like the idiots we are, we will have to cough up and switch over to the new system (costing lots of $$$$$)

Oh, and you'll need a box on your TV as well to pick up a sh*tty range of channels from RTE (paying for the privilage of the box, satilitte dish and also paying for the TV licence).

there was a thread somewhere about the Wall-E blu ray disc. The gist of it was - why is there a second disc when the first disc should be able to hold the data.

I think blu ray is simply the next thing for them to sell. DVD's work fine for most things. If you happen to have a 42 inch tv you may consier getting blu-ray, but if, like me you have a collection of 200+ DVD's, the idea of replacing them with blu ray hurts the hole where my wallet used to be.

TBH blu-ray players should be able to play standard DVDs anywho. But I guess we're gullible enough to buy into the must haves...

Which is wholly not the same logic every comedian will end up applying within two years.

The same as people who had loads of songs on LP or tape felt when changing over. Or when the latest greatest console pushes your poor old megadrive to the background.

It's not like those 200+ DVDs aren't going to work anymore anyway so what's the problem?

Thats because you have to put lots of other little words in between so that you make a fully formed sentence.

Got a BR player as part of a deal on a 42 inch screen - the player also plays DVDs, while the BR picture is noticeably higher definition, i woudn't be replacing my DVD collection any time soon. Especially because DVDs are dirt cheap at the moment, especially old releases - it's just like VHS before DVD took off - but this time DVDs will play back on the same box so you have the best of both worlds.

But yeah - It seem ridiculous to be bringing stuff like that out on BR.

Personally it looks like Mr Tiernan had to make up for his lack of humor and just concentrate on putting more effort into the technology of his releases.

Higher def is great and all that, but I'd rather not have a tomato stain on my nice LCD tv tbh.

Exactly. Unlike the VHS to DVD situation people's Blu-Ray players still play regular DVDs so you could buy the regular disc knowing its future proof and cheaper*

Just found it odd.

* Im lazy. No research was done on prices. Assumptions are easier.

The thing is that there are format snobs out there who will refuse to buy a DVD and will only buy BluRay from now on. This release is just catering for those people.

well i would buy the blu-ray if it was the same price as the dvd, but knowing ireland it's going to be more expensive so i wouldn't buy it.

worth it for movies etc, not to see some gob****e stand on a stage.

nothing snobbish about having a big tv, thinking a dvd looks bad stretched out over the larger screen and having the money for blu-ray. that's called having a big tv and having money..

sigh. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with having a big TV and wanting to make the best of it. I watch my movies on an 80" picture so I can appreciate the inadequacies of DVD.

What I'm saying is that there are people who will not buy a video (even a comedy one where picture quality is not important) if it's only available on DVD. Those people are format snobs.
