I classify Dunnes and Tesco in the same league/direct competitors.
Similarly, I classify Lidl and Aldi in the same league/direct competitors.
And im sure people who shop in either Lidl/Aldi, shop in Tesco/Dunnes (Supermarket) too.

If that's the case, where did Aldi & Lidl get their 7.4% market share from?

Poll should reflect all the major supermakets in Ireland inckuding Superquinn and Supervalu.

Dunnes , Tesco has gotten much dearer.

I rarely get to Dunnes, but refuse to shop in Tesco. The fruit and vegetables are of rotten quality, unless you go for their "finest" range, which brings it up to the level you get in Lidl for a quarter of the price.

The amount of out of date food on the shelves is appalling, the shelves are often dirty, the icecream is always rancid when it is bought in Tesco, like it is let melt, and then deep frozen in the freezers. And this is the Tesco in Dundrum, possibly their flagship store.

Add to that, their constant price increases on the majority of items, while taking out full page spreads in the papers to highlight their few special offers. I call bullshít.

It was always Tesco until the last 2 or 3 years... I worked in Tesco for 5 years and my ould fella managed Quinnsworth/Crazy Prices/Tesco stores for 25 years so I know how things should be done.. Tesco seem to forgotten that actually having stock on the shelves is a big part how things work. Tesco Dundrum, Stillorgan and Nutgrove are all within 10 minutes of me and all three shops are a disaster. Dunnes Sandyford, Cabintely and Balyogan on the other had are extremely well run and stocked stores.

Tesco also seem to have developed the habit of introducing new products that appeal to me and then just withdrawing them a few weeks later. O'Briens Coleslaw is the most recent example of this.

I am also accutely aware that Tesco pull the piss out of the Irish in terms of pricing, especially when it comes to their non-food section. €25 for foot spa down here and £7 up north just can't be explained away.

whats the deal with self service in tesco?

Why do they let you serve yourself, if they're going to keep looking over your shoulder, and every second thing you scan something goes wrong that they have to come over, scan their card, and just walk off. It's fúcking stupid.

"unexpected item in the bagging area"

Or they won't let you take the basket out of the shop into the car park, just otuside the door - coz if you do that you set the alarm off. That highly pisses me off.

    Dunnes ftw.

Also the standard of hygeine in Tesco stores is disgraceful, shelves aren't cleaned, freezers and chill cabinets aren't cleaned on a regular basis whereas Dunnes do Deep cleans on Freezers and Chill every 2 weeks.

A lot of that is down to local management.
    Tesco Artaine Castle is well-maintained
As for Tesco Ballyfermot *shudders*. The store is a kip and any attempt I've made to engage the manager she walks away. Even simple things like collecting baskets so customers don't have to go hunting for them. Management don't care but the staff are friendly to be fair

I'd got to Tesco due to interia and pure laziness. It's on a bus route and nearby. I don't own a car and I don't buy much, nothing you can't fit in a basket

I don't even know where the closest Dunnes is to me actually

I much prefer Dunnes, but the nearest one is quite a ways from me, whereas I'm 5 minutes away from a Tesco. So, unfortunately, Tesco gets most of my business!

Tesco, because the food and range is so much better.

Tesco is the nearest supermarket to me and I can do my weeks shopping for €15 there, so Tesco. I occasionally buy fruit and veg in the english market which is more or less the same price but a bit better quality and family run (or run by a bunch of aisians anyway, I assume they're related). But I'm a lazy bitch so I generally just grab the lot in Tesco

shop in dunnes stores (besides the odd trip to asda)

don't like tesco, self service counters - they don't like me for some reason something always goes wrong

an odd time supervalu but i find them the most expensive.

Aww. Look at you acclimatising already. :)

I generally shop in SuperValu because it's closest to me.

I'll be paying tesco a visit tomorrow to buy lots of cheap beer.

Lol, I can't lie, I was pretty happy to be able to contribute to this discussion!

And you're right, Tesco does have cheap beer. But I bought a 6-pack of Brooklyn Lager from them last week, and either it tastes much different in the bottle versus the draught, or it had gone skunk. Wasn't happy, either way.

Tesco, Cleaner, nicer, quicker (esp self service).

Girl in Dunnes tonight took 15 mins checking out a co-working with all her vouchers and crap... AAAARGH!!!!

You'll find lots of things taste different here.

You can actually eat beef without the accompaning growth hormones. Edit: How do you spell that word? I'm half shot.

There are plenty of ingredients (read chemicals) banned in the EU that are readily available in the US and vice versa.

Tesco ... cause I hate Dunnes - but that may be down to the fact that my mammy loves it.

Not to get too OT, but I've noticed there are far fewer hydrogenated oils here, which is wonderful. They're nearly impossible to avoid in the States. Also, Irish tastes seem to be sweeter, which I've noticed in tomato sauces and curries.

Good for you, being half shot! Drink one for me!:D

A mix of M&S, Superquinn and Aldi.

Tesco solely due the fact the wexford Tesco makes up half of the town whereas the Dunnes in redmond sq. is roughly 2 feet by 2 feet

    Thanks anyway.

    Can I have three?
I'm trying to limit myself to eight, but if I drink three for you, then I can finish all the beer in the fridge.

As for the food, sometimes sickeningly sweet.

Prefer to make my own sauces. :)

Meh, whichever is closest will do fine.
Centra is grand too. I avoid SuperValu if possible - they do NOT have super value!

I love Dunnes in Cornelscourt, but they're so expensive compared to Tesco, buy as much as possible in Lidl but there are some things you just can't get there.....
I love supermarkets, love Tesco in Wexford, and I love love love going to the Supermarkets up north, they have yummy food.

Tesco..mainly because I work in Dunnes so can't face going in there when I don't have too, the place gives me nightmares :( plus the rest of the family shops there so it's handier all round!

bad memories in dunnes, back to school clothes was one of them (shivers).
Always knew summer was over when mam and me go to dunnes, even looking in depresses me!

Tesco all the way, especially the combination of tescos and bargain alerts!!!

    Tesco.

    Reasons:
Brother works for their head office.
    Closest Dunnes about 10+miles away.
    Open late.
Can add on you clubcard points at a later date if you forget to bring your clubcard.
    Have great educational english/maths workbooks.
Great for picking up childrens prizes for school.

Definitely a plus point, Dunnes used to it but they stopped. Don't know why  Customers get really annoyed when they realise they can't..usually at me
