Strange error message

About a week ago my computer started to freeze at seemingly random times, I would press ctrl+alt+delete and the after a few minutes the screen would go black for 10 seconds and then it would appear with the error message:

"Logon Process has failed to create the security options dialog."

From there the only way to do anything with the machine was with a hard reboot and everything would be fine once it started back up. I tracked the problem down to occuring when my anti virus (avg) began it's automatic scan and with a bit of googling the only information I could find on the error message was that it appears to affect a range of anti-virus software (Bullguard, Avast, McAfee, etc..). None of the forums offered a solution other than to uninstall the anti-virus software and then reinstall (this worked for some not for others). That would lead to believe it was some sort of virus kicking in to prevent the avg from running.

Ended up doing a system restore and everything is running ok now but I was just wondering if anybody else had encountered a similar problem?

This problem reappeared again this evening. I'm wondering if it's tied to Windows defender. I received an update to Windows defender last night and I checked it there and it was running a scan about the time the computer crashed this evening.

if your computer is crashing when your anti virus is running it may be caused by a virus detecting the anti virus scan and defending itself preventing the scan to complete, try running a scan in safe mode
