Using keyboard shortcuts with VSTs (Cubase)

The mouse pisses me off so I try to use the keyboard as much as possible. It seems that if I have a VST open and try to use the keyboard that the keyboard is still connected to Cubase (does all the cubase shortcuts). I was wondering if it's possible to change this?

im lost, what vst's use keyboard shortcuts?

you should look at midi-controllers for that purpose.

I have a step sequencer that uses them to record/play/shift octave but can't link these to CC messages.

Won't have a MIDI controller for another few months (broke:().
