Remove Gearstick Knob VW Golf Mk 4

The gaitor around my the Gearstcik in my golf was worn so I bought a new one at the weekend. I bought a one size fits all one in Halfords, but now I need to tuck it under the gear stick knob. Has anybody had experience of removing the gear stick know in the golf? I don't want to break it.
