The Super Van was re-built for the movie “Super Van” in the early 70’s. It started out as the Love Machine in the late 60’s, made out of a Dodge Sportsman Van. Super Van was example of the ultimate in futuristic motoring with solar energy.
The 318 cubic inch engine and automatic transmission were not changed, but the undercarriage was beefed up with Bilstein Shocks, for added stability and performance. The body was modified to establish a basic belt line from which fore and aft dual vertical arches (that house quad mercury tubing safety roll bars) act as air foil spoilers at the very top, which provides added high speed control. The grille bars are of “V” type to accent the body line, with K.C. quartz lights for full flood road illumination, behind the outer bars. The rear grille-bumper assembly is unitized with chrome face and colored offcast to match the front grille bars. U.S. Steel sheeting was used to from the aerodynamic sculptured body panels. Polaroid charcoal tinted glass is used at vision areas throughout the vehicle except for the center rear section, in which adjustable louvers were installed, matching the louvers along the very top of the side windows. The right side master door glass lifts like a gullwing and the body door section at that points lowers for easy entrance as well as to unveil the elegant plush interior.
A six foot U shape boudoir sofa is the center of the entertainment console area, using a new flamboyant blue and orange burnished cotton material. The interior utilized Van Stuff accessories, with Perkins seat panels and Cole snack trays for added luxury pleasures. Musical sounds from a Craig stereo flow through quad speakers and dual 40 channel CB units. Wild music bars transform the tones to visual colored lights. A plastic servateria slides our for easy access to refreshments. The number two compartment contains a monitor phone with intercom system. In the center, a Panasonic colored television and video units offers another choice of entertainment. Another compartment houses a Panasonic recorder for all taping and playback. Solar Power and electric panels by Sensor Technology, Inc., and PDC Labs, have solar battery and electronic system. A unique computerized lighting circuit with switches, actuates the electronic system to provide more battery power from the solar cells.
The exterior finish color is coordinated by the concept of Burnt Orange Sunset Pearls of Essence, and then blended to a bright sky blue candy, sprayed in 40 coats of lacquer. Then hand rubbed to a high lustre. Lazer stripping beams in prisma tapes and metalflake extends up on the fore and aft arches. The final touch are the G60 Formula Stock tires mounted on 10” Appliance wire mag wheels.

I vaguely recall something about that BMW M1 crash. My uncle worked at Ford in Stillorgan at the time and was involved with the Motor Show that year. I think the M1 had something to do with the Show and was crashed by an employee.

Actually perhaps it IS the Frank Keane one, he may have had to buy it instead of making a claim and upsetting BMW.

Just a thought, could be totally wrong, but hey...........

I also love the Mk1 Transit, havent seen one for so long. I know the early ones were V4's, I assume you could get the V6 aswell, I seem to recall a few Ambulances were v6 petrols. Many were transformed into rally crew vehicles.

That blue Escort Mk2 is stunning, as are the Alitalia colours.

That's great as I know I have a good memory, I take some stuff for it and it works very well. It's unlikely you would remember something that never happened. So all someone has to do is talk to the guy and maybe get him to do a live re- enactment of the scene. I don't remember any blue/white stripe and have no idea if it's original.

I saw that transit in action in Goodwood a couple of years ago, it was some yoke to go. As far as I remember it's got the Jag chassis and suspension fitted too!

That Transit was the TWR development mule for the XJ220, it can actually accelerate quicker than the car, it was used as a works delivery van etc

I was wondering where someone would get an XJ220 engine and other components, they are not exactly a car that you'd see in a scrapyard too often! :D

it's a 93-94 body shell, position of the fuel cap gives it away...

That RR is made out of so many non-period bits it's of indeterminate age.

Well the registration number dates to around 1977,not sure about the rest of the RR though!!

This is an 85-88 body shell, which can be determined from the 'outside' visible door hinges and integrated door mirrors. However, the grille and left side wing panel are of a later date...

The Range Rovers have a seperate chassis with a bolt on body, so it's very easy to take the shell off and replace it.
Also, the Chassis never changed significantly through the years (with the exception of the 91-94 chassis when it received Air Suspension. But the size never changed, so you could literally put any body shell on top of any Chassis.
Since there is no legislation in place, that forbids putting a 'younger' body shell on top of an old chassis, it is perfectly legal to fit a 1994 body shell to a 1977 chassis, even though the old Range Rover would have been 3 door. Also, again because there is no legislation in place to fit a new, even more modern engine to the car (as long as you pass on the changed engine capacity to your insurance company (:-)) ) it is also perfectly legal to change the old 3,5 litre lump with a fuel injected 3.9 or even 4.6. I mean engine conversion have been done in past in many, many cars, the likes of throwing in a Nissan, Mazda, or Perkins diesel engine, and nobody would blink an eye. On the other end of the scale, people have put RAcing Tuned TWR engines in a Range Rover

Here is Holland, driving a modified Range Rover tax free is very popular, so Ireland is not alone in this. There are quite a few for sale here, that would have a late (or as the ultimate, the 94 Soft Dash!!) body shell, on a early seventies chassis, a modern engine with an advanced LPG Gas version and underbody gas tanks (so you dont loose boot space!!). All legal and above board, as long as you don't do it the easy way by welding in the chassis number, that is highly illegal!! So, if you see a modified Classic Range Rover with an old registration number that has Air Suspension, then the owner will have some explaining to do, since switching over the air suspension is a very difficult modification on an old chassis (although I have seen it being done)

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 2,913 Mod ✭✭✭✭macplaxton

In the UK there is a points system in order to determine what's original and what isn't. 8 points required and a chassis is worth 5.

Now the chassis bit goes like this.

    a) original unmodified chassis - 5 points.
    b) brand new chassis with receipt to original specification - 5 points.

Unmodified allows chassis shortening, but not welding things on like brackets for alternative steering arrangements.

From that, even having a chassis alone isn't enough to retain a registration mark, it has to have some of the original suspension / axle / steering / tranmission or engine to push it past 8 points.

If it doesn't score enough and all the parts are over 25 years old. It's classed as a re-constructed classic, which is dated on the youngest component and given an age-related registration mark.

Otherwise it ends up on Q-plate.

This system also allows kit cars to carry over a registration mark providing enough of the donor vehicle is used.
