People who are highly intelligent are usually the ones with no social skills.I rather have a social life and cram for my first class honours rather than sail thought it and have no friends.

joined it once many years ago
    was entirely pointless, subsequently left

iq is also rather meaningless in a practical sense I'd say

I'm sure most of you know what Mensa is. Those who don't, Mensa is an organisation made up of extremely intellegent people with a high IQ. The the organisation is said to be the largest, oldest and well known organisation and it goals are
(1)To identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity
(2)To encourage research into the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence
(3)To provide a stimulating enviornment for it's members

Here's my problem. We have an organisation mad eof of some of the smartest minds in the world and yet what exactly do they do. You would think that an organisation like Mensa would put their brainpower to good uses like researching a Cure for Cancer, Aids or developing othe types of cures. They discover new scientific wonders, or they could very much help mankind any different ways. But instead they rarely do anything. I mean it just seems like a waste of intelliegence and to be honest it's quite disappointing to see the lack of interest they have in other things other then themselves

Then again i may be wrong, if i'm wrong then please let me know where i went wrong. But my point is, Mensa for all it's smarts dosen't have the intelligence to put their minds together
My understanding is Mensa is and has been networking for intelligent people, before networking was popular (myspace, facebook, monster)

Mensa is more a group or community than a company or an organisation. Think of it more like a directory for high IQ persons. Been meaning to join for a while now but im too lazy to get re-tested. Lost my old results a very long time ago: I only know im somewhere in the 120-150 range. I imagine a good few people here are tbh.

Possibly because if they are in that IQ bracket they would maybe have been approached by a teacher in school or a friend at some point may have suggested Mensa to them therefore have an opinion on the subject which is why they were drawn to this thread in the first place. I think you'll find in a thread relating to handbags the majority of posters will be female. It's the same kinda thing, ya dig?

he's just sadbecause they won't let him join a club us samrties feel above

    Wrong - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_the_Wealth_of_Nations

Wrong - Ireland's average IQ of 93 ranks 36th in the world by country (drink kills brain cells) behind Bulgaria, Romania, Isreal, Slovenia etc, 7 points lower than the global average.

The rest of your statement is basically just presumptuous conjecture based on an unquantifiable sample.

    1 thats wikipediea
2 its a contraversioal book with little or no peer review
3 its iq estimates (how does one estimate the iq of a nation)

To obtain a figure for South Africa, the authors averaged IQ studies done on different ethnic groups, resulting in a figure of 72. The figures for Colombia, Peru and Singapore were arrived at in a similar manner. For People's Republic of China, the authors used a figure of 109.4 for Shanghai and adjusted it down by an arbitrary 6 points because they believed the average across China's rural areas was probably less than that in Shanghai.

Sounds like a very well researched book:rolleyes:

i think youll find that wiki page says Ireland's iq estimate is 9365695896595 to consultech it's called deductive reasoning, perhaps you should try it. you doubt the possibility that 2 people with iq's over 140 iq use boards...if so you're a moron, im sure there are people on here with 170's or higher, infact im sure there are hundreds of people on boards with above 140 iq. To whoever said it doesnt matter a ****e is completely right, i can fix a computer, play 3 instruments, im pretty good at hurling. To the best of my knowledge paris hiltons iq is 127 and george bush's is higher again and david beckham may seem like an idiot but he has a crazy subconcious knowledge of physics, thats not taken into account with iq tests, neither is social skills, musical skills, artistic skills, emotional skills, physical and sporting prowess, decorum or many other aspects of our lives

Should probably point out to people that "online IQ tests" are usually a load of ****e.

In AH you have to suffer reading tripe posted by everybody from the least inteligent amoeba to the odd erudite post by those who have mastered joined-up writing. In Mensa there are far less oportunities for interaction with the lower orders. Boo to Mensa, Hurrah for AH.

To quote Groucho Marx "I wouldn't want to join any club that would let me be a member".

Mensa tends to be more of a drinking social club in Ireland and the UK. You'll be sadly disappointed if you turn up and expect to walk into a debate on symbolism in the works of Dostoevsky.

Mensa are actually an evil organisation who are trying to take over the world.

Dead right Overheal. With a Boards subscription you can be an official nerd for just €50 or $63.60 a year. Do Mensa let you into the Sexytime forum? Didn't think so.

Yeah I'm not reading six pages of this. I'll just assume it was very witty in the context and move on.

Is it me or do you have little grip on reality about iq points you claim to be 150+ that would be officially classified as off the normal testing charts and above genius.

made me giggle to see other people too saying they're around the 150 mark, almost on a par with einstein and stephen hawking who are said to be around the 160 mark, although there are others who are higher

    anyway bahahahahahahahahahahahaha:D

I gave it a shot - and going by your attitude - I can reasonably deduce that you're playing with one of your instruments more regularly than the others.

OP's ideas don't make sense because the people who are interested and capable would be already doing that as their job(or should, anyway). Mensa is more of a support thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭ZorbaTehZ

To say that mensans should be getting together to 'cure cancer' instead of doing number wheels or anagram puzzles shows that you know zilch about mensa. It isn't a ****ing research institude, it's means for people with high IQ to get together and socialise, and that's it, nothing more nothing less.

Maybe you should look up what a normal distribution is and then reread that second part.

What's your point?, its something like 0.1% of a population would have an I.Q score over 145, but they all happen to be on AH eh:rolleyes:

haha this turned into a dick measuring contest waaaay too fast, dive in with the new witty comeback and w00, you are the thread king. Ok so i lied, my iq is 40. I can bearly go out on a windy day for fear of being blown over, infact im not even typing this, my helper monkey who is trained to read my mind (yes folks a bulemic monkey) is typing it out, his iq is much better than mine. Threads on this board get so pointless after a while...anyone up for a game of roshambo?
