I just blew up megaton last night. I'm developing a tendancy to blow peoples heads off as well, if I don't like them. Just exploring and doing the side quests, leaving the main quest to one side (I hear it's very short).

I think this may be my personal GOTY. Really, really enjoying it.

Hmm, I seemed to have accidentally furthered the main quest just by talking to someone outside of the current active quest:
My current quest was to search out the Galaxy Radio station, but was just exploring randomly. Came across Rivet City & spoke to Doctor Li. It turns out she knew my pa & got a "Quest Completed" for the Galaxy Radio quest. boo!

    Ah, as I guessed.

Vance would have been one of the guys on the receiving end of my flamer at the time.:D

    probably picking this up later.

What skill level should i play at to get the most enjoyment? I don't want anything too challenging but also don't want it to be a walk in the park.

Also, are there any skills/perks to pickup/avoid?

Keep it at normal, its still quite challenging on normal. Ammo can still run out fierce if your not careful.

Besides the actual perks when you level up you can recieve additional perks from doing quests and such. There is no real perks or skills to avoid, it basically comes down to individual tastes but what advice i can give you is if you come across a quest that also has 'opintional' things to do in them then do them also as you usually get better rewards at the end. Personally iv found having high intelligence and the educated perk is great for getting your skills up very quickly

I love this game! Its hard to call whether i prefer this to oblivion yet, we'll see how the story turns out. Gotta love drinking out of the toilets though..
lol, been playing it for a while now and ive only realised that "Bottle Caps" are the Caps used for money! Was really annoyed with myself to think of how many i left behind thinking to myself "Bottle Caps? WTF will i need those for? Tsh!"...

I love the VATS system though, only annoying thing is the whole serious lack of ammo!! (Also having no stimpacks, then getting crippled by a grenade when 4 Super mutants are chasing you, fooked!)

The random crashes are really annoying, but i just have 4 save files and use them in turn, saving every five minutes or whenever something happens. So if it crashes and i load my file and it crashes again, i can load another on and not lost too much..Come on patch!

If you check the Fallout 3 wiki I linked to back a few pages it tells you the causes of the crashes and possibly fixes afaik.

I hope they improve the crippling effects in the next patch, its annoying "crippling" some Super mutants head and not having it affect his actions, accuracy in anyway. Same can be said when you cripple and arm while someone is blasting you with a minigun, they shouldn't be able to carry it anymore and should pull out something smaller to try kill you with. I only shoot for the head in VATS to get a critical or shoot the weapon to destroy it or get it out of their hands.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where the key is to the cell in Hamilton's hideaway?

I was thinking about playing this as Evil as I could. Is there any point of concentrating on every bad choice in converstations and quests? What effect does it have in the game?

I actually find that ,saying nothing is the best way to play.
Because the character tells you what their thinking then:D

Some bird gave me 400 bottle caps ,because I let her rabbit on.

Speaking of money, anyone have any good tips to get extra cash, be through good barters or whatever? I appreciate why there mightn't be ammo everywhere, but my lack of money is really hurting.

    I had the same problem.

Always repair anything possible, low condition stuff is almost worthless and repairing gets you extra cash as well as freeing up space.

Sell everything. Always know different traders in order to have somewhere to drop off your stash.

Yeah, but my money woes are so bad that I can't even afford to repair my own stuff, let alone the material I scavenge.

Lord; who knew a post-apocolyptic world would be so tough!

Hard was quite good, nothing impossible.

Not sure if your asking me ,but heres what i did.
When I was in the shack village (can't think of the name, the place with the robot outside) ,got talking to an irish guy that owns the saloon. Had to pick the lock to get in. It's at the very back of the village.

After talking to him a few times ,he asks for you to go and get silver (girl) . When you walk out of the village ,you get a marker which leads you west ,to a house.
Walk in and find the girl ,she starts talking. Don't say anything ,let her ask you about whether the guy sent you.

Basically tell her that you want the money she owes the guy.

Then when you go back to the bar ,tell him you've killed the girl .
Ask the guy for the information again. Offer him 100 caps and he accepts ,you keep the 300 thats left and the information you need.

That is one of the early story quests that you did there.

I've been roaming around looking for raiders and then flogging off their armour and spare weapons, after repairing my own, to get some cash together. I now seem to be getting ambushed every time I fast travel anywhere as well, so as long as I survive that initial ambush I gain a nice collection of new hardware to sell on to the nearest trader, assuming that I can find one that actually has any cash to buy my stuff with that is.

Thats one way of doing it my way proved far more fruitful....
Moriarty is the guy. He wanted 300caps for info. I blew his head off, stole all his caps and used his computer to get the info. Then I went to the girl, levelled with her for 100caps and told her I would say she had dissapeared. Then I blew her head off and stole the rest of her money.

The finale of a game like that ,should be interesting:D

Having good speech skill is a good way of getting money also. You can usually always get twice more money from people doing quests for them if your successful.

    Other tips:
    - Sell the ammo/weps you dont want to use.
    - Pick up any whiskey, wine, vodka, pack of cigs & cig boxes to sell
    - Hold onto any pre work books, sugar bombs or scrap metal you come across as you can trade these to people later on for caps (the guy who runs the waterplant in Megaton accepts scrap metal for 10 caps a piece)

Yea i find that nice guys are always broke in rpgs.
There is always a situation something like:
    Them::"Can i have a bajillion credits?".
and your responses are either: "yes" or "no, and now you die!".

    KOTOR comes to mind

Something bugged me about the game
,just before I met moriarty. I stopped at the first bar place and went in.

I started drinking water ,when suddenly about 8 yobs started shooting at me. Battering me ,I hadn't a hope in hell of doing anything.

Strange carry's on ,it had me afraid to touch anything:(
    .

Water is quite a valuable commodity in the wasteland.

Best way Iv found to make caps is having high repair skill and the ammo scrounger perk. Repair is a must have due to how fast weapons degrade and picking up 3 crap condiction weapons and repairing them into one good weapons get you lots more caps.

The scrounger perk for ammo ( not the caps one) rocks as ammo has zero weight and you will have oddles of ammo by about level 10 so just sell ammo for weapons you dont use much like missles.

Currently have 10k caps, every house item and all my gear is nearly at max condiction :)

Iv found that friendly NPCs will turn hostle if you are inside certain areas when they would normaly be closed like the trading area of rivit city. If you have NPCs saying stuff like "you need to leave now" its time to get the hell out of dodge :)

Only played for 2 hours the other day when i first bought it.
Ever since when i try to boot up the game i get an error saying fallout 3 has stopped working blah blah blah.
Ive tried some things mentioned on official forums but still no joy.
My comp is fully up to date and high spec.

Look in your game directory for the Fallout3.exe and use it to launch the game rather than the one in games folder ( vista ) or the one that gets made for you during installation due to secuerom crap on those.

Ok, been playing this for about 4 hours on the 360 and it is my game of the year so far. Better than i could have expected. Addresses so many of the flaws of Oblivion. Its actually worth looting now. Its worth taking on the real tough enemies to get better rewards.

I'd love to drone on but i gots gaming to be doing....

Been playing this for ages today and I love it. The V.A.T.S system is just brilliant and the cinematic style when you take shots. Have just
    disarmed the bomb in Megaton
. Finding so far that I have very little caps to purchase things with and am running out of ammo frequently. Does this cap situation start to change as you progress (e.g will I be waiting years to buy items in the shop for 1700 caps?)
