Newbie - Advice Needed

    Hi Folks,

Keeping a long story short, I am 30, physical shape not bad, no martial arts experince, looking to start something...?

Principal Reasons for starting a martial art is that I had a bit of a health scare recently with my old ticker(in the clear now) and its made me realise that you only get one shot, I have always had an interest in martial arts but never gave myself the time to study one, with work and collage

I am more interested with stand up rather then ground based, dont know why, maybe if I tried it I would have a differnt opinion, so maybe one day I will. Also I am not an aggressive person at all.....not that I think you have to be aggressive to want to train but I am alot more interested in the techniques used rather then beating somebody up.......does this make sense?

Just wondering what people thinik of the idea of starting out at 30, if its a runner what is around the city centre/southside as this is where I live and work.....?

Basically do people think I am too old to start and should I take up golf instead?

    Any input would be appreciated
    Thanks for you time
    NW

    Hi

You are not to old to start martial arts. If this is something you want to do, have a look around and try out a few styles. When you find something you like and a teacher you feel comfortable with, than go for it. In my classes I have people starting in their 40's and 50's and they having great craic. I have classes in southside and city center. If you interested in trying out one of these classes drop me a PM and I sort you out a trial class. Good luck with your search.

We have Taekwon-Do and Kickboxing training at our place, we're on the bus line out of town and we're in Cabra. It's great for fitness and all the usual bits and pieces!

Every single person in my beginners class is older than me. Some are old enough to be my dad. They love it. Give it a shot and I'm sure you'll love it too.

    Drop the golf clubs,
    then
go to www.chupasart.com on the Long Mile Road. That's all stand up, Muay Thai is a really interesting way to train and there's a lot to it. It's also much more physically demanding than a lot of other martial arts so you'll get fitter faster.

Best of luck with the search, don't hit the golf course just yet man there's many more years to go. At least I hope there is or I'm fvcked too.

The club I run has an average age of over 30 so you can come down and see what we do. It's in the Liberties so check the website at my sig for info.

I got 2 beginners starting next week already so you can join in no problems.

Never too late. I train with guys who started training and competing older than you are now.

I'd suggest you try out a few arts and see which one you enjoy the most.

Never too old... I know a guy who's just graded for his black belt in his early 50's. And he started in his mid 40s

What locations southside / city centre suit you best? There may be some clubs that are really handy to your house which will at least make it easier to initially try them out anyway. Convenient to your home can be a great advantage re actually getting to a class etc. Then again, if you find a club you like further away, the travel will be well worth it.

I'd also recommend trying a few different styles to see what you prefer. Worth spending the time doing that now rather than later. Any decent club will make you feel very much at home in your first lesson. You may just really click with a certain club's atmosphere, personalities etc

I have to agree I'm in my 40's and started CfS about 2 years ago to get my fitness back up ..try a number of clubs and see what suits you...If you like pop down to the handball alley on monday nights upstairs about 7:30 ish and see if you like it ..first class is always free.. the training is intense but the guys are nice but if you dont like it your free to leave or come and go as you please :).. all egos are left at the door :)..my advice is pick a club and style that suits you personally and socially and that you can fit into your social and work life..and that you would find intresting and challenging enough to keep you going back...:)

Hey there, yeah basically what everyone else has said, perhaps researching diffrent martial arts online and that may give you a general idea about what you want.

Obviously what style you choose is up to you, but it needs to be one that works for you. I have been training in TaeKwonDo for about 4 years now and i love it, however this style worked for me so it may not be for you at all, it mixs physical and technical aspects so it will keep you fit and it has the technical side your looking for.

As for classes on the south-side may i recommend http://www.inta.ie/clubs/#Dublin that link will bring you to the Irish National Taekwondo Association website with a list of clubs in dublin. They train in the ITF style of Taekwondo which is what i do. have a click around on that website and see what you think.

Of course thats just a suggestion and i'm not trying to be biased here about what martial arts to choose there is a wide variety out there and i would suggest looking at the one's that most appeal to you.

Go to some clubs, talk to the instructers and see what they have to say.

I wish you luck with your search, and let us know what you opted for yeah?

    Cheers.

30? You are not too old for starting MA. It's grand for fitness, but if you have a heart problem, recommend that you consult with your GP before beginning any MA classes. If your GP agrees, then make sure to inform your MA instructor that you might need a gradual start and slowly build overtime to reach your fitness goals.

You might consider taekwondo as one possible standup MA, but I would recommend that you shop around schools and disciplines to see if there's one that draws your interest. Some schools have free or discounted introductory lessons, where you can experiment and see if you like the MA as well as the instructors. A good way to shop before you commit.

Hi nigglewiggle. If you are still looking for a club there's a new American Kenpo club opening next Monday in Kilmacud. While the main focus of the training will be on "self defense" I'll be helping them to develop a "functional" sparring system based on Kickboxing/MMA sparring.

    See www.crxkenpo.ie for more details.

If you would prefer a more sports based club then the MMA gym I train in is in Drumcondra/Fairview and only a 10 min or so bus ride from Dame Street. We run specific Kyokushin classes alongside the MMA classes which focus only on stand up.

    See www.mmaireland.com for more details.
