    Hallowe'en attacks on Emergency Services

    Saturday, 1 November 2008 07:57

The emergency services have been dealing with fires as well as attacks on police and fire officers during Hallowe'en night.

Two gardaí have been taken to hospital after they were injured following an altercation with a group of people in Dublin. The two gardaí were on foot patrol when they were attacked by a group of seven or eight people just after midnight on Dorset Street. The two gardai were taken to the Mater hospital for treatment.

In Sherriff Street in the north inner city a fireman was injured and a fire engine was attacked by a gang of youths as the emergency services attempted to put out an extended bonfire there at around 9pm.

The fire officer is believed to have received an eye injury and was admitted to hospital. The windscreen of the fire engine was smashed in the attack.

The Dublin Fire Service reported up to six knife attacks and that 40% of calls related to assaults, many of them resulting in head injuries.

The ambulance service received more than 500 calls. Up to 50 cars were set on fire in the capital. The Fire services also dealt with three significant blazes in Dublin.

One at a factory at Castleforbes Road near the Point Depot, the second at derelict apartments in O'Devaney Gardens close to Arbour Hill in the north inner city and the third at the Westen Inn off Mountjoy Square.

The Fire Service also reported bales of hay being dragged on to a road in Co Monaghan and set alight.

In Northern Ireland, police officers were attacked with petrol bombs and fireworks in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh shortly last night.

The PSNI says it believed a fire at a tyre depot on the Corrody Road in Derry was started deliberately.

The Fire Service of Northern Ireland said that its regional control centre in Lisburn received a call approximately every minute last night.

The estimated cost of damage caused during Hallowe'en is expected to run into millions of euro.
During a night of violence in Dublin three buildings were set alight including a factory and dozens of cars were torched.
Dublin City Council estimate the clean-up operation alone will cost close to €1m.

Should have been public order units out on standby all over the country last night. The trouble makers don't like when they see the lads in the balaclavas dressed head to toe in black bailing out of public order vans. Another fault of management though, this is what happens when budget is cut = less gardai on the street = more trouble.

there was public order units on.at least there was in dublin and wicklow anyway.is there any reason why you say there wasnt

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭djtechnics1210

Did Wicklow have a proper public order unit out last night or was it 3 uniform in a van with a few shields and helmets thrown in the back. Well done to the Super down their if he put a full one out, I know that divisions in dublin had public order units/vans out last night but there were very few divisions/districts outside dmr with a public order unit deployed last night. Suppose its up to each super to sanction it, its a lot of money to put out public order units as most lads will be on ot/sub etc.

In my district we had 6 cars and the public order van out. High visibility throughout the district and the night passed off peacefully.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭djtechnics1210

Thats what ya need Nog, when theres high visibility and lots of mobiles, trouble makers know that we're out in force and that if trouble starts their be plenty of members around to help out, its great when you hear the troublemakers commenting on how many guards are around, those nights are always peaceful. Fair play to management in your district for putting out that many members etc. I was always a believer that nights like halloween are when ya need as many marked mobiles out as ya can. No point having loads of unmarked cars out .

It's about time the gloves came off with these scumbags but then you'd have people screaming Garda brutality (I'm not a Guard btw). Could we bring the French CRS over on a "cultural" exchange for the night?:p Having seen them up close in action I wouldn't fancy being on the receiving end!!
I think we need to seriously think about introducing a curfew for Halloween but then you'd have the civil liberties crowd up in arms (shame they only think about the rights of criminals but that's another rant!). I'm getting sick and tired of the way the scum in this country seem to be taking over while the politicians and judges keep their heads buried well and truly in the sand (amongst other places).....absolutely makes my blood boil!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭pokerface_me

Why were there 50 Guards standing behind there vans and cars while they got burned out and don't tell me because the scumers were throwing stones??? I agree time to take the gloves off with these scumbags, but you have to open your eyes to, is these scum don't give a flute, where are they tonight??? Back drinking on the streets probably. How many were arrested???? How many are in cells tonight??? Scumbags are taken over the place because they are allowed.......Gardai standing behind there cars...tell me who's afraid of who.

Its a small thing called health and safety = you dont see firemen running into burning houses without the proper equipment, you haven't a clue about anything regarding AGS and I think people should just ignore poker face because he obviously has nothing worthwhile to add to this forum and from his attitude it appears that he is not a member of an emergency service. "The ones that slate the Garda are always the first to call them when something happens".

800 incidents = how many where bonfires causing nobody any bother only busy bodys wasting our resources.

6 knife attacks, i'm sure there is plenty of stabbings every weekend.

40% were assaults probably the same percentage for every Friday night.

50 cars burned out, probably 50 cars burned out every weekend around Dublin.

    Riot em yep ok.

this is not a competition ye know.

any more flaming from you will earn you a ban from this forum. If you have anything constructive to say then say it.

No to be honest, all the money in the world wouldn't pay me to do it, you get no back up from the Judges, courts. The scumbags just laugh in your face. They know nothing is going to happen.

People that join the ES know damn well what they are getting into, if you can stand the heat get out of the kitchen i say.

Then clearly you shouldn't make comments when you have no operational experience to back it up. you have never been in a confrontational situation like that and have never had to deal with it so you really have no right to comment about members being scared and hiding behind vans as you called it. And just to let you know its operational procedure for all members not part of the deployed public order unit to stay behind said public order unit so this is probably the real reason the members were behind vans.

But that doesn't make sense to me, right there safety is of upmost importance i understand that, but what does the ordinary Joe bloggs think when he hears or see's this, look man you got me wrong i'm on the Gardai and Firemans side here, but they should be allowed to enforce the law of the land by any means. And standing behind vans while thugs run amok doesn't give me much confidence. The country is going downhill unfortunatly and its about time the Guards were given more power to enforce the law.

again ill ask.is this a typical night at your local.please describe a riot in your eyes.the 50 guards were standing behind vans as there WAS stones and other missiles thrown at them but there was another section of guards wearing their helmets etc in front of vans so they werent just standing there looking at the trouble or the cars being burnt out.your hardly telling me you expect them to rush them
