Have they axed the Swedish dept. in Trinity?

Basically, yeah.
It was a component of the Germanic Languages degree but that was axed this year.

Right, but there still is a Dutch dept.? that was kept?

There is no Dutch department either it would seem. Though Dutch appears to be part of Germanic studies.

I know its part of the discontinued Germanic Studies but the website says you can take it as an optional module if you are taking German in TSM

Flemish is anyway. No idea about Dutch. Point was that there is no "Dutch department".

Sorry the point I was making was that it doesnt surprice me that Dutch is in the German department.

Dutch people can talk in Dutch to germans and vice versa and they can understand each other

Hey, I'm in my final year of Germanic Languages at TCD. Here's the lowdown!

There is no swedish or dutch department and never was -- there's the germanic languages department which houses both. It's an office on the third floor. They used to be in a bigger office on the fifth floor (where the German department is located)

They began phasing out the entire course last year. They still accepted new students this year, and I think they will be the last ones to graduate before the course closes down (either that or second-last).

The current first and second year GL students will no longer have the option to do swedish (usually one starts dutch and german in first year, and then begins swedish in second year). They're pretty peeved about that, as they weren't told this when they signed up. I think they are teaming up with the modern languages society to get swedish classes in the evenings.

Only the current fourth years are still able to do swedish. Third year is spent abroad for GL students so I imagine those who are away now will be able to continue swedish when they get back, if they are doing it abroad -- though I'm not 100% sure about that.

Yes- Swedish, German, Dutch, Danish; they're all quite similar. My dad is fluent in Swedish and can understand the others reasonably well as a result [particularly Danish, it's practically identical].

I want to know if You can do Dutch as a subject if you take German in the TSM because the prospectus says so!!

This year at least, you can still take dutch if you're studying german. But only in second year, I think.
