Thats what i loved about fallout, it just let you explore at your own pace. I was playing mass effect there and its all "bang bang, boom boom". Fallout took so much time letting you settle into this unfamiliar world and "meet" people.

God I want to play this game!

Is this game just using a modified version of the Obilvion engine? If so I'd imagine it should run ok on my pc (8800gt amd phenom 2.4GHz 2GB ram - Vista).

Trying to decide whether to go for pc or console version.

Although I'm finding pc games harder to play these days. Think I'm developing a mild case of RSI in my right arm from work.

Playing through Fallout2 and Tactics atm, love tactics for the free combat which isn't limited to turns. Really looking forward to Fallout 3, lets hope they pull it off !

I was thinking of getting the Limited Edition instead, comes with a Brotherhood of Steel figurine.

Reviews are in and the game sounds amazing. Best to get it on PC if you have a high end one. PS3 is the worst system to get it for.

    PS3 IGN review

"However, there is one major issue with the PS3 version that can't be fixed with a reset. Every time anybody on your friends list signs on or sends you a message (or any time you receive any network notification), the game freezes and the screen blurs for a few seconds. "

Hopefully it will be fixed with an update.

The game seem's epic in scale, not enough hours in the day.

They do like their 10/10 reviews, dont they :)

Considering they really slated it in the initial previews, my expectations for this have gone even higher. As a big Oblivion fan, and a small fallout fan, i cant wait to try this now. Gonna need my new graphics card first though.

Too lazy to check, but is that the same person who did the negative preview?

Nope... Previews were by Christian and Oli (Oli's was particularly damning).
    Review was by Kristan.

who also did the Oblivion review (and gave it 10/10) so there will be some bias there.

Also the metacritic reviews are showing a few 8/10's popping up so I have a feeling its another 'generous' 10/10 from EG.

That would be 3 reviews out of 16 on metacritic - 4 if you count an '88' ;) besides, since when does 8/10 indicate crappiness? See, gaming marking schemes are a load of bollix :D To be fair, your judgement on the game does likely depend on your ability to immerse yourself in a gaming world you're playing in (witness Noodler's impatience with the start of the game). In the case of EG, clearly Kieron Gillen loves getting lost in the mythos of a game & those of its type.

Dammit - was almost hoping this wouldn't be good because the wallet just can't take much more punishment. I'm knee deep in Fable II, Gears 2 is out in a week and FIFA needs attention too.

    Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.

After reading that EG review it's still pretty much Oblivion with guns.

    No thanks.

    It sure does.

    Yes please!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,408 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Yes please from me too. Oblivion was great, and is even better with the fixes the mods can do (some of which are included as standard in Fallout).

I think it's probably a 10/10 alright. I think that reviewer is a fanboy to an extent (gave Oblivion 10/10) but I believe him when he says it's an improvement on Oblivion in all areas. That's more than enough to sell me right there (although as a long time Fallout fan, I was always gonna buy this no matter what)

Well your mention of the eights did suggest a certain cold water being thrown on EG's judgement, so I was just pointing out that so far the less-than-stellar reviews are neither the majority nor the opposite of the waxing lyrical being conducted.

My own feelings have taken a 180 so am once more looking forward to sampling the world. It seems like the important faults of Oblivion have been remedied. Can't wait for the mods !

I was questioning the 10/10 from EG a bit alright.

I understand your arguement that 8/10 is still a good score but its rare to see EG give a mark that is above the average of all other scores. Also, as good as 8 is its still 20% off full marks. I haven't enough hours in the week to play to 10/10 games let alone 8/10!

Anyway, I put 20 hours into Oblivion at the weekend so I need to know the quality of Fallout before I jump in.

The game has scored an average of 93% not 80%. If you are going to base your opinion on critics then thats how you base it.

I never said the average was 80%, I said its rare that EG give a score ABOVE the average.

They fixed the levelling system, the level scaling system, and a few other things that i cant think of right now. I am still playing Oblivion at the moment (albiet a heavily modded version), and its still a great game. Certainly has its flaws, but if Fallout is similar, in a post apocalyptic world...being it on. I wish our world was post apocalyptic :(

Yeah, I get pretty much constant aching in both my arms (left more so, I'm a lefty). I also get needles and pins a fair bit in both arms more easily these days depending on how I sleep. I guess dicking around with computers since the days of VIC20 and working in the IT Industry for the past 10 years is to blame.

I particularly notice it when I'm playing PC games at home. I have the PC on a Dining Room Table which isn't suitable as there's no elbow support. Once I get my study cleared out I'll move it upstairs.

Anyways, I'll be getting this on the PC. I simply cannot play FPS type games on joypads.

    TC

Wow I sure hope Ive been here long enough to reply to this but here goes anyway!

The first screen takes 5 minutes to get across for some reason with little scorps picking at me. Then I get to a outpost of some kind and theres nothing at all to do and the most I got anyone was a "welcome to.." or generica "hello". I got to the target vault and there is a ladder but I can\t figure out how to get down it.
