Windsock are you seriously compating Christmas shopping to porn?
Or is this thread just all a joke?

I won't even start on how stupid that statement is.

Seriously, have you thought about the fact that some shops are so busy at this time of year that they have no choice but to organise their Christmas decorations and stock before the crazy Christmas rush. Most shops have to hire extra staff at Christmas just to deal with sales, let alone decorating.

That's a low blow, and from the quality of spelling and grammer of Lolas posts she would be far too literate for the sun!:D

What has the start date of the thread got to do with anything, my point was that this had started in september therefore 4 months before Christmas, you don't seem to grasp this point!

I don't get you point at all, I didn't see any shops with Christmas decorations up in August/September, or Christmas ads on TV or the radio, what is your point?
Woodies and 2Seasons sell decorations to professionals, they would need to have some of that stuff in stock (just about all year round) but the general shops: Dunnes, Tescos, Smyths etc didn't have anything of the like, at least none that I visited.

How so? The point is that you don't need to have something shoved in your face to be aware of it. Why is it stupid?

Woodies had started putting their decorations up in Sept, not on sale! That is my point! I had thought my post was clear, obviously not!

Windsock there is no need to become rude towards me because i don't agree with you. Your statement was people don't force you to look at porn and people don't force you to look at Christmas decorations but they are still there. Personally i think there is no comparison between porn and Christmas but i guess thats just my crazy thinking. I'm surprised you are becoming so argumentative because people aren't agreeing with you. I doubt its beyond your understanding to realise some people enjoy the Christmas decorations...

Just threw that in there as that is the sort of thing a tabloid would pick up on from my post and askew it. I never stated that Christmas was = Porn, unless santa's sack was....no, forget it :pac:

I think it was Limerick, not sure, they were banging on about it on the radio, some people were getting quite annoyed about it and ringing in saying other woodies were doing it as well. I remember thinking at the time that it was a step too far!

Yes, why do you think when you go into Dunnes stores, the pictures of people advertising in there aren't having sex with each other? After all, sex sells.
I'm surprised you are becoming so argumentative because people aren't agreeing with you.

How is it surprising, isn't the whole point of an argument to give your point of view to people you don't agree with, as you are doing now...?

    porn is censored-chrismas isnt.
this whole thread became ridiculous when porn was mentioned

windsock you asked for opinions, now your arguing with people for there opinions and insulting them?no need for that

One statement refered to decorations for sale WS, the other referred to decorations the store itself had up.

Hope that sorted the confusion. :P

Well there's no point in insulting people by not reading their posts properly and askew it to mean something entirely different either.

Yes, and why is porn censored, when all we have to do is not look at it if it offends us?
this whole thread became ridiculous when porn was mentioned

No, this whole thread became ridiculous when my post was taken up wrongly and written to make it into something else.

Where did I insult everybody I am disagreeing with?

Nobody re wrote anything you said./ I saw what you wrote and in understood that you felt the same about christmas as porn. I thought the poster who took you up on it did so lightly. If thats what you meant perhaps you should edit or clarify your post if your getting abusive to posters over it.

I didn't abuse anyone. I am being falsely accused again? Please show me where I am being abusive and where I compared christmas to porn and I will apologise. If you can't then I would expect one in return, and an apology for dragging the thread way off topic.

I'm twenty now and I have to say, from my point of view it's always been like this. Even when I was a strapping young lad in the 1990s Christmas would start to invade my conciousness somehow, maybe not through direct hysterical "MERRY CHRISTMAS"-isms but definately a noted increase in toy advertising beginning in September (every year) or more direct xmas scratch card advertisements in October.

What I'm trying to say is this whole "is Christmas starting too early" argument is something that has come up consistantly every year for as long as I can remember, and it's easily ignored that it's pretty much the status quo nowadays. I think a few people just have to get used to it or something.

i try and shop early for the simple reason that all my big bills are due christmas week - mortgage/car insurance/childs birthday/esb etc - i get paid monthly so its usually a long long bleak january, therefore i find it prudent to shop now, yes now 62 days before christmas, in order to pay for my bills and have a bit leftover. Im not suggesting for a moment that these stores are pushing christmas to cater for people like me, its a recession, they need profit and they need us to spend on christmas, hence promoting it early.

They promoted it early before the recession too though.

It doesn't bother me but I do find it amusing to see people defending the practice by talking about what a tough year shops have had and how they need to ram Christmas in our faces to make people shop.

Surely their best bet would be to promote halloween instead, which is another made up spending excuse and when that's over move on to Christmas? This would mean they didn't dilute people's Christmas spending surge over several months and they could put more impetuous on hard selling halloween instead.

End of the day though I do like going into a shop and seeing the decorations. Hate the music though!!

Harrrveyyyyyy Noooorrrman! Immediately when I hear that name I think of an irritating cnut with a loud aussie accent! I am aware of where the shop is, what it sells, and will go there if I want to buy something, I do not need that voice screaming in my ear! I feel the same way about Christmas ads on TV radio, music in shops

the recession came about for a number of reasons, it didnt happen overnight, prehaps a slip in sales volume for the past few months prompted retailers to encourage spending to enable them to predict future cash flows. I dont work in retail but i work in marketing, christmas stock obviously is seasonal stock and therefore has to be sold, the longer is is available to the consumer the more likely it is to be sold. You dont have to buy it, its merely an invitation to treat not a binding contract
