Tisn't the Season...

I have just sent this letter here to a consumers rights thingy:
    To Whom it may concern,

I was just wondering if I have a right to complain about Christmas being imposed on me far too soon when I go into stores such as Dunnes, Pennys and Marks & Spencers? It is only October, hallowe'en hasn't even arrived yet and already christmas decorations and paraphanelia has rared it's festive head, since the end of September, I believe.
I find it a bit distasteful myself, I know it's not a huge issue but it kind of ruins Christmas before it has even begun. Please let me know if there is anything I can do about this.

    Regards,

    Windy

Is it a bit petty, or do you think shops should have a sort of respectable time frame to start wheeling out the festivities?

I would have been a bit more direct in my wording, be interesting to see what response you get!

In fairness, Christmas is only 8 weeks away, not that far away.

Although, M+S and Pennys have had Christmas stuff since end Sept/start Oct...which is a joke.

    Yes it's petty.

Shops are there purely to make money and it has been a tough year so in that respect they are trying to utilise the time left in the year to increase revenue.

It's not personal as Christmas is just another way to make money.

You can chose yourself whether or not to shop in these stores.

Same as last year and years before?
You can chose yourself whether or not to shop in these stores.

Well yeah I can, but they might want to know why I choose not to go to their stores.

Another thing to highlight the sillyness of pre-silly season sillyness is that M&S have mince pies on thier shelves that go off in NOVEMBER

Personally i know a lot of people who really love Christmas and can't wait for it to roll around again. They plan days and evenings out to see the decorations and visit Santa etc and always find the presence of Christmas in the shops quite cheery. While i would think Sept/Oct is early to display Christmas items, who am i to take it away from the people who enjoy it?

Also i love mince pies so if i bought a pack today they would be long gone by November. Nobody would buy food now for Christmas and theres no rule to say you have to wait for Christmas to eat a few mince pies

And who are they to force it on us? Don't get me wrong, I'm no grinch and I do love Christmas, but I don't need to be bombarded with crass commercialism from the minute the kids go back to school, and don't get me started on that godawful music we have to put up with

No-one's forcing you to go into the shops or to look at the Christmas stuff.

I love Christmas too, but not 4 whole months of it shoved in my face.

I think most stores play awful music regardless of season

That's a ridiculus statment! Are you suggesting I hibernate / starve / stay indoors until Christmas eve? People still have to shop.

What sort of christmas shopping do you need to do in 2-3 months?

Presents? They can be bought anytime.

Decorations?- I presume you don't put them up until December (why's that, I wonder?)

Food?- Most likely will be bought in December also.

I don't think anyone follows you around waving Christmas items in front of you? If its that bothersome then perhaps you should avoid the stores that are too annoying for you. The only options you have are to try and enjoy the Christmas cheer, never go into a shop for the 3+ months Christmas stock is in, avoid the shops that you find especially annoying.

There are elements of stores we all dislike all year round, you put up with it or shop elsewhere.

I think Jaycen is suggesting you try to avoid the Christmas stuff. Usually Christmas items stay in a particular section with a few decorations spread around the store. Do a few decorations really annoy you that much?

Bit nosey but ok, we're expecting our first baby a week or so before Christmas so I have to get everything (I mean everything) sorted before the start of December.
Presents, have some, have ideas for others I'll be buying most this and next weekend, some small stuff up to the day itself as usual lol.
My decorations won't be up until after the 8th of December, but that's my choice I'm not going to try to force my opinion on anyone.
Food will be bought in the next month, not risking stuff going off but have the biscuits, drink etc already.

My point is that it suits me this year, along with probably a few others, if the shops didn't have some of the gear now I'd be chasing around all the time waiting for waters to break .

BTW folks there's 2 months left not 4 as stated wrongly above.

Fcuking hell.. shops are giving people the option to buy early, instead of ransacking their shops 2 weeks before hand. Why does that annoy people so much?

"I can't believe it, i walked into dunnes today to buy a pair of socks and i had to look at some singing Santas on my way.. fcuking sickening!"

Again, surely they would like to know why I am boycotting their shop, also the majority of shops are jumping on the christmas competition bandwagon, so I have little to no choice.

There are elements of stores that I expect to put up with, and I am able to carry on shopping regardless, but honestly I just think the whole christmas in Autumn thing is taking the piss.

Woodies I believe started putting up decorations in Sept, therefore 4 months! I don't really think you guys are getting the point! It is the shops, the T.V. radio, all constantly barraging you with this stuff. It's like hearing a great song on the radio, then hearing it again and again.......pretty soon it makes you want to throw up! If shops want to start selling goods early fine but be a little more discreet about it, at least let Holloween get out of the way first!

Lifes too short to spend crying because you've had to walk past some Christmas dectorations. Get a grip.

No one forces me to look at porn either, but there is a reason why there aren't naked men and women having sex in ads.

    Bit nosey but ok,

You don't have to answer my post then. I was just putting it out there to see what you cant buy now that can wait until christmas (and why do you need xmas paraphernalia in shops to buy it? bar the decorations of course.)
Presents, have some, have ideas for others I'll be buying most this and next weekend, some small stuff up to the day itself as usual lol.
Again, presents can be bought any time of the year, regardless of advertising and paraphernalia ( I like that word a lot ;))
My decorations won't be up until after the 8th of December, but that's my choice I'm not going to try to force my opinion on anyone.

Whats that got to do with forcing opinions? There is a perfectly good reason to put up decorations in December, but by your argument in this thread, you may as well put them up now to ''get int the spirit of things''
Food will be bought in the next month, not risking stuff going off but have the biscuits, drink etc already.

Grand, biscuits and coke are available all year round, again regardless of whether Jingle Bells is playing in the shops or not.
BTW folks there's 2 months left not 4 as stated wrongly above.

September, October, November, December. 4 Months

Thread started toady, that's 2 months.

Woodies and 2 Seasons have decorations for sale most of the year, that's what they're there for

Slow i can't speak for everyone but i think your point is coming accross, i'm not sure my own point is though...

I find Christmas stuff in stores a bit irritating but not enough to boycott shops or give it much of a second thought really. When i see people enjoying Christmas, i personally find that quite nice. Windsock from your previous posts i did not realise you were boycotting the store and letting them know why. I think thats fair enough. As i said before you don't have much option to either put up with it, get involved or stay out of the stores. You've chosen the latter so fair play to you.

In all honesty i can't see how it annoys you this much. It seems like you're taking the presence of Christmas quite personally. Its not there to annoy you personally, its there because Christmas is coming up, some people enjoy it and some people want to shop now, obviously you don't.

But you can't choose not to have all this inflicted upon you every time you go to the shop, or listen to the radio, or watch TV though. It's everywhere already, and you can't avoid it.

I support the campaign to ban everything Christmas until December 1st. Christmas is December, not November or October and certainly not September. In fact, I've been receiving Christmas promos at work, as I'm part of the social club, since June. Yes, you heard me, JUNE!
