Why do single journey train tickets cost the same as day returns?

And then why are monthly returns almost twice as much?

I don't really mind or anything because I could (and probably should) be paying adult prices but I just don't understand.

The standard single fares are regulated by the Government.

Day return fares are discounted by the railway company, as a promotion to stimulate travel as are the current web fares promotions.

That's why they're often not available on peak services, as capacity is already limited.

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Irish Rail! Leave that cold logic in the car, it doesn't apply here.

I remember one Saturday morning years ago, I had to travel from Dublin City to Edgeworthstown. I had to pay the same fare as a Monthly Return for the priviledge ... and there were only about 3 people in each carriage.

Way to go promoting off-peak travel.

Irish rail now do cheap one-way off peak tickets. They can only be booked online.
