program shortcuts on desktop?

    hey.
    how do bring a program such as textedit onto the desktop, for easier access. also is there any free software thats handy to use that might have more functions than texteditor?

    Ctrl-click -> Make Alias. Drag the alias to your Desktop. You could also drag the app's icon to the Dock.

    You could try Bean.

    You can download open office for mac, it's basically microsoft office but free, made by sun microsystems. I believe neooffice is free also never used it though.

    Can you get OpenOffice for Mac? I thought that you can only get NeoOffice for it. Am I misinformed?

    Yep :). You can get OpenOffice for Mac OS X - and with the latest update, it doesn't even need X11 installed like it always has in the past:
