put the blade in a pyramid overnight - a nice small 15cm one should do

or realistically , you could sharpen it on an oil stone,
the stone you can find , make sure it's got a fine grain
oil , should be able to scrape some off the road or of an empty oil container in the bin in a garage

The blades last me months and I've a thick beard I shave everyday. If you shower before you shave the beard will soften and will be easier to shave because there will be less friction. ..... Also only shave with the grain of you beard.

i found if you use cold water when shaving it makes the blade last longer. so Nice hot shower to soften up the skin and hairs then shave with cold water running. the blade doesn't get warped by the heat of the water so lees of the face taken off too. Oh and if you know anyone heading to the US get them to pick them up for you . they are a hell of a lot cheaper over there as is the old shaving gel. picket up some Gillette shaving gel in walmart last month for $1.67 compared to around €4 here. Mach 3 blades, 12 of them for $25, i haven't bought blades here in years so someone else may be able to tell you if that's cheaper but if memory serves me right it is.

Original razor blades were designed indefinitally without getting blunt but manufacturers have smartly designed them to last only a few shaves by tempering the metal prior to sharpening. You can get one up on them by purchasing this blade sharpener. :)

I read somewhere that storing your razor in a bit of vodka prolongs the life.

There's a programme in NZ called The Money Man on how to save money by doing small things around the house. One thing he suggested was to store your blades in olive oil. I couldn't understand that. Is olive oil free now or something?

Other suggestions that may now come in handy were to fill milk bottles with water and put them in the fridge. Apparently it costs more to run your fridge if it's not full and this way you also have cold water to drink FOR FREE. Another suggestion was to decant all your shampoo and body lotions etc into those plastic bottles with the pump things on them. That way you don't take loads of shampoo and it lasts longer.

    Yeah, NZ tv isn't great!

BIC rip the face of you.

When I saw the thread title I thought someone wanted to save on haircuts and shampoo in the recession by shaving their head.

    That's how you save money.:D

Actually letting it grow would save even more money.

Actually the olive oil does really work. I deliberately - and some might say sadly ;) - marked the day I started using it with a new razor. Started Friday the 31st July with a new Gillette Fusion razor (non battery type). Once I finished shave, I rinsed off razor then patted it gently against tissue paper to get any loose water out. I then leave the blade in just enough olive oil to keep it covered until my next use (I shave daily). I have not changed the olive oil since. The blade is as sharp as day one today. Usually a blade would be dull within 5-7 days with me. It's all down to oxidation of the blade I've heard and that the olive oil keeps this from happening. Stand to be corrected, but feck it, it works!

Gilette Sensor XL is the best razor I have used, have triedv the mac3 and Fusion nonsense and honestly the blades get worn out in no time, the XL's blades last ages. Although at the moment I have a full beard...

Shave once a week with a pair of hair clippers like myself... I may look like a tramp but at least I'm saving a fortune!
