Austria's Jorg Haider dies--let the conspiracy theories begin

    Just as the right makes a resurgence in Austria, its most iconic figure Jorg Haider is killed in a car crash.

    I can just see every political correspondent from tabloids to TV going "Coincidence? I don't think so!!"


    Think the speculation about this will run and run.

    I don't really think any conspiracy theories will emerge from the story of Haider's death. Basically he was driving at 142 km/hr in a 70km/hr zone, according to preliminary investigations released on Sunday.

    I suppose there is the fact that he is not the only populist anti-immigration politician in a western European country to die suddenly in recent years - after the assassination of Pim Fortuyn in the Netherlands in 2002 there were all sorts of theories about different groups who may have had a motive to go after him.

    However, in Haider's case it seems to be a case of speeding. Are you suggesting that his car was being chased?

    And now it has been confirmed what a lot of Austrians believed for a long time anyway. Haider was as camp as Christmas.

    His boyfriend (nearly 30 years his junior) has confirmed that they were hot and heavy with each other.

    Let me see now. Glamorous but controversial figurehead. Engaged in an exciting liaison with a partner "unacceptable" to the ruling elite, driving at speed and while pissed.......no similarities to the Diana situation at all.

    So who dunnit? The far right, to get rid of him. The far left, to reveal his dirty secret and discredit him?

    Any truth that Sir Cliff Richard was involved in a love triange, and out of jealousy conspired to have him killed?
