The Secret - Fact or Fiction

    Hi all,

There has been a lot of talk recently about the secret which promises that if used correctly, you can have the life of your dreams etc.

For those of you unaware of 'the secret' this is what it is:

Everything in the universe is operating under one law - the law of attraction. Like attracts like. Each thought that we think transmits an energy frequency into the universe. Whatever we think about, we bring about. We attract to us all of the people and circumstances by virtue of the images we are holding in our minds. So therefore, we have the power to create our own destiny. If we feel bad, we transmit a negative frequency and manifest bad things into our existence. And if we feel good, then we are thinking good thoughts and therefore manifest good experiences into our lives.

So what do you think? Do you believe this to be true? Or do you think its a load of crap? Have you used the secret and did it work?

Everyone uses it. You don't think you are but you are.

    Example:
Bloke A goes out to a club to get pissed and pull. He's not enitrely sure it's going to happen. He talks to a few girls nothing happens.
Bloke B goes out to a club to get pissed and pull. He fully believes he's going to be in someone's knickers by the end of the night. He is.

Whether or not they know they're useing energy or vibes or meditating or the law of attraction isn't important, but they are.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I don't think the sentiments are a load of bollocks, but the way in which they are presented - as something groundbreaking etc - is.

What it's about really is positive thinking, focusing on the good in your life rather than the bad etc, which I think is important for people to grasp. It's not easy for everyone though so self-help authors make a killing on this basis.

Sh1t things happen to a lot of people - whether they think good thoughts or not, but it's how we deal with them that makes a huge difference...

Sounds like simplistic bollix to me

Ha ha - I think you quoted the wrong post of mine...:pac::pac::P

Yeah, most people think it's crap cos it's oh so simple.. If it were more complex, would it be more believable?

I understand the basics of what you're saying and i actually agree with the sentiment, i just have a problem with people preaching condescending spiritual bollix.

This is also called cosmic ordering. I've read a few books on it, and although the topic is always aimed at drippy self-help types, I found it really interesting. A lot of it is rooted in scientific fact.

Positive mental attitude, Believe and you will achieve, etc etc etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,836 ✭✭✭Sir Gallagher

Once again i agree with the principle, but with terms such as "cosmic ordering" is it any wonder why cynical people such as myself can't get on-board with it.

    1. What is this "energy frequency"? What kind of energy is it? Is it measurable? From where is it transmitted?

    2. Were the residents of Hiroshima all "thinking about" atomic bombs when one dropped on them in 1945?

Is this just a c*ntish way of saying "be good to others and they'll usually be good to you"? It doesn't hold true always, but it often does. Not ground-breaking in the least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭gaybitch

No, not ground-breaking. It sort of crops up in lots of cultures over the past thousand years in some way or another - positive thinking, prayer, wishes, meditating on a thought, whatever.

I would have been extremely cynical when I read the book. Having seen the Oprah maniacs going on about it, "I believe in the secret and now I am a millionaire" etc. While I think the whole marketing is over the top, I have to say the general message of the book is true. Go through life with a negative attitude and you won't prosper. If you think positvely you are more likely to achieve. Success is a mindset. The book while not exactly ground breaking helps to reaffirm some basic commonsense in a simplistic fashion. Have recommended it to friends.

Well, one of the examples given in the book is this: A group of athletes were hooked up to machines that measured energy frequency. The same muscles fired in the same sequence when they were running the race in their mind as to when they were actually running on the track. The mind cant distinguish whether you're really doing it or whether it's just a practice. If you've been there in the mind, you'll go there in the body.

    2. Were the residents of Hiroshima all "thinking about" atomic bombs when one dropped on them in 1945?
Admittedly, this is the part that I find hard as well. Do the most vulnerable people on this earth attract living in a war torn region etc? They deal with it briefly in the book but it wasn't enough imo to give their argument substance.

Yep.. I found it in the selection of avatars offered by boards. funnily enough. Why?

I didn't read "The Secret", actually, so I can't really comment about the women on Oprah or anything. But, really, if you read scientific books that deal with cosmic ordering, there are several experiments that have been done that focus on mind over matter, wish fulfilment, affirmations etc.

It's really just experimental philosophy, that some chancer is trying to convert into simplistic self-help shi.

    But

    There are other people?

Everything in the universe is operating under one law - the law of attraction. Like attracts like. Each thought that we think transmits an energy frequency into the universe. Whatever we think about, we bring about. We attract to us all of the people and circumstances by virtue of the images we are holding in our minds. So therefore, we have the power to create our own destiny. If we feel bad, we transmit a negative frequency and manifest bad things into our existence. And if we feel good, then we are thinking good thoughts and therefore manifest good experiences into our lives.

That reads to me as something on a purely one to one level. Which at that level it works.

    But multiply it by millions.

person A transmits thoughts that manifest good destiny for him, but it will have bad consequences for person B how does this work out?

Or what about people who transmit directly hate and anger towards their fellow man?

Plenty of those about. They don't seem to have good lives though do they.

1: Go around trying to "transmit" hate to your fellow man. There is no magic cosmic universe watching you. But your fellow man will pick up your body language / verbal language etc. and will avoid you or ignore you.

2: Go around in a positive frame of mind and don't constantly whinge. People might want to talk to you or get to know you and opportunities will arise.

It's not a secret but try it for yourself. Walk out around Dublin and have a look at some of the sour pusses going around. The constant whinging comes from those with the negative frames of mind. The people who do well in life don't generally go around hating or blaming other people. The people who don't do well always have somebody else to blame :)

Existence is complicated so instead of trying to understand it I'll just pretend everything revolves around me and things happen because I have mystical mind powers.

I have actually read the book, one of my female friends (it is about 80% females that are perponernts(sc) of this "Secret" much like you will find with astrology, tarot card reading, psychic phone line advice giving scamsters ect, I'm just saying), knowing I don't believe in this kind of crap insisted that I do. Now the concept of "think positive and it may be more likely that positive circumstances will unfold" I can get on board with. I believe that, to use the example someone above gave, if a fella goes out thinking "yeah I'm definately going to pull tonight" then there is more chance of him pulling than if he is doubting himself, but that is down to the fact that he will be more confident and he will be more determined to keep going if things aren't working out for him at the start. But that's it. All this crap in the book ($16.99 from all good retailers btw, order now and receive a free healing crystal, and a dream catcher to ensure a pleasant nights sleep) is just that, crap. It's just a big dose of mysticism with a few scientific phrases thrown on top, and claims that "even one of the smartest men alive, Albert Einstein, knew this Secret". It's the usual, quick fix, you just have to believe in yourself, we'll tell you everything you want to hear, but we're for real, just ask this scientician from the university of Guam bull****, aimed at the same market that ring PsychicsRUS hotlines and check their horoscope everyday. Please, if you are planing on buying this book, think about it for a second and then make a donation of $16.99 here instead http://www.ispcc.ie/Donate-Now.aspx . I guarantee it will be better for your karma.

I must see this Scientific Fact or else I'm calling Shenanigans on this statement.

I don't think anybody doubts that if you have a positive outlook, things will go better for you, but to claim that on some cosmic level the universe is going to give you everything you want is just complete and utter crap.

I'd like to sit the woman who wrote this down and get her to list off 3 things she's going to ask the universe for within the next 3 months, and see just how successful she is. Or if she'd ask for some abstract thing like for "life to get better" that she can't be forced to quantify, therefore proving in her mind, that this bullcrap secret works.

It is a fact that the secret is fiction.

But essentially it is just telling you to have an optimistic look on life .. and to believe in yourself and positive thinking blah blah ...

I'd say most people want two things in life, love & money

Now in love we know that confidence is a factor in scoring and one can extend this to a job/etc (e.g. job interview nervous wreak Vs outgoing confident type)

but if someone wants to pay $30 to give them more confidence and it works, then good for them
