I passed it. I cant remember exactly what they look for, I think its a big peak and then you have to keep it above a certain level for so many seconds.

Same here. Big peak at the start and then the big long wheezy blow as your lungs empty, come up your throat and turn inside out....there is a profile that you have to match or near enough match. It was hard going, I'll feel sorry for all those drink drivers I get to take to the intoxiliser! NOT!

Honestly though, I don't think they would fail you and not let you know.

Yeah the spiro machine was a blast

The nurse said mines were quite good which surprised me. It could depend on which nurse you get though. The nurse I had told me to exhale all the air in my lungs until I felt ready to pass out. She also kept saying "push, push, push" as I was finishing each attempt! So I knew exactly what had to be done.

Although the doctor gave me no indication at all that I wasn't fit, I'm still worried about the result as it seems that unless your able to only tick one or two of the more trivial boxes in the form (the odd allergy etc) then they fail you. In a lot of cases I think this is mainly just to get more evidence on your condition when you appeal.

Only time will tell though...

Out of curiosity, has anyone ticked one of the more non-trivial boxes and PASSED?

I ticked the pneumothorax box and got a pass. Apparently it's fairly common in bean-poles such as my former self.

I aced the spirometer test, so I think they realised it was no longer a problem.

Not to harp on about the medical results, but has anyone actually received the letter saying they have passed/failed the drugs test yet? Or is this a letter destined never to come?!

I don't think anyone's received a drugs pass/fail letter and the medicals have been running since the start of September. It's looking like you only pass the medical if you've passed the drugs test.

mate i wouldnt worry, i couldnt do it eithjer but passed it for c13! the nurse said i was to young and my lungs had not fully developed (i was only 19 at the time) hope this helps

Good to know mate but I'm 24 so I would guess the lungs should be fully up and running! Kicking myself I didnt get out there & get fitter so that my lungs would be better! If I had realised how hard it would be then maybe I would have! Did the computer come up as poor result for you?

Has anybody heard anything about many no shows for the medical itself? Heard from someone the other day who said most days 1/4 dont show. Say they are processing 16 medicals each day, out of them 16 maybe 12 or 13 show and the other 3/4 dont. Seems a very high number (if true) and I wonder if it is mainly in relation to the hair testing or have people just suddenly decided the jobs not for them?

Hey, the guy doing the drug testing told me the same thing as loads of people hadn't turned up on the day of my medical. Strange

I think alot of people apply and do the tests without really really wanting the job that much. Then when they get a medical date they cant get to it through work commitments or just cant be bothered going. I also wouldnt be surprised if some people have went to do the medical and were unable to find the building. I would never have known where to go if someone who knows the area wasnt with me to direct me.

So let's say that Recruitment are putting the top 500 in the merit list through the medicals and ¼ don't show. That could mean that someone who initially had a merit number of 500 could end up being 375 on the list. Happy days!

Our merit numbers could essentially be ¾ of what they were. :cool:

And that doesn't even account for med/vet failures and people who don't take up the offer.

Well i couldn't find the building when i got there, as I accidentally went the coastal route! Then seen a little policeman on a motorbike, flagged him down and asked for directions, and he gave me a police escort the whole way there!:cool: haha. The man on the gate looked at me as if to say...who she think she is!

The medical has nothing to do with the drugs test, there are merely held in the same place and happen on the same day. The drugs test is more closely linked to the vetting side of the process

This makes me sooooooo happy!
There was a no show at my AC and I know of other ACs who had 2,3 or 4 no shows. So stands to reason the Meds might well be the same!
All the better for those of us who reallllllly want to be in PSNI:D

I did not even know about this website until a guy at my medical a few days ago mentioned it. I am totally terrified to ring up and find were I am on the merit list.

I suppose the numbers will all change after the results of the medical, suppose its somewhere to start.

There were 2 no shows at my test, I don't understand why people would go through all this for nothing.

If you've had a medical you've done very well, I wouldnt even worry about finding out merit number.:D

Hey thanks for your reply, should I be worried that the medicals started in September and I am only getting mine now, does that mean anything.

My nerves are totally gone with this whole process, totally worth it though.

My friend is in here 5th week of training, the more I hear the more green I turn.

Dont be worried there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the way things are being organised medical wise.

Yep this process will turn you into a gibbering wreck but its all good clean fun! ( Unless you hit the lemsnort but thats another story altogether!)

We've board friends in training at the minute and they love every minute of it even tho its incredibly hard work and long days.

Roll on the day its me!!!!!!!:D
