Anyone know why UPC broadcasts so many of its analogue services in Mono ?

    Channel 6
    Living TV
E4 (yes there is a dodgy reason re 48mhz but not for the 535(?) frequency

While MTV defaults to mono on any philips TV (Whats that about)
and its not unknown for sky one and sky news to be in mono

And while talking about Audio - why is the audio on Setanta so loud! - i know in the UK there are laws about the audio levels

the audio on channel six is compressed to hell aswell, it sounds bloody awful, which is a pity seeing as they play a good bit of music videos

I always assumed the reason that E4 on 64Mhz is in mono was that it was the former Eurosport frequency and Eurosport was never in stereo on analogue satellite (so the cable feed was mono). But I don't know why Channel 6 isn't in stereo - maybe they're just not running some of the NICAM encoders anymore?

Though in a way I think Dublin are lucky to get as many stereo channels as we do, down in Limerick I remember the only channels in stereo on Chorus were the Irish terrestrials.

Yeah it's still like that in Limerick. I doubt any of the analogue headends are going to see any upgrades at this stage. NICAM encoders cost a lot - just looking on eBay and the only one I can find is €2500!

This too. It seems to only be their own shows and trailers that have awful compression (puts Californication to shame), the US shows sound fine. So I guess it's their fault.

You should try listening to the sound on the analogue feed for RTE 1, 2, TV3 and TG4 on the cork network. It's absolutely dire, clearly they're encouraging people to get a box and a proper digital sub.
