ah they've always been blocked, but i don't see what the problem is with some applications that cannot be used like skype webcam etc. when your paying 4,000 or 5,000 a year ya think you would be able to do some of these things

You're paying for an education, not an internet connection.

Well the webcam conversation I'm currently having over skype would imply that it does actually work...

If you keep trying to connect to file sharing networks on the ucd network they ban your computer. That's why you have to register your mac address with daedelus.

There are still a few places around campus that have unrestricted access but they're usually closely guarded secrets or just in places undergrads don't have access to so it's probably not worth lookin'.

If you're pissed off about a slow connection just change the proxy you use. Netsoc explain all this stuff, or well they used to anyway.

howd you get that working? mine doesn't work with msn and its says in the guide doesnt work with skype so i presumed, dont suppose you would know how to get steam working? lol

Just go to Tools -> Options -> Connections -> Auto-detect proxy, and it works. I've never gotten steam working, but I can;t say I;ve tried very hard.

Rapidshare uses HTTP as it's totally web-based. However, the free one can be very slow.

No you don't, I haven;t registered mine in the 3 years and have no intention of doing so.

Give www.your-freedom.net a try, although I will warn you that if they bother to check why someone is running an annonymous web proxy aswell as a socks proxy, which is unlikely unless someone goes to alot of work to bother, most likely they wont be able to restrict much of anything to you, unless they just go outright and block your connection completely.

I just bought a new mac and am terrified of registering it with the it crowd in ucd (what if they ban the **** out of me for downloading a load of music?). It runs grand anyway but can be a bit spotty. Also the more you download in one day they slower the next one gets.

Been considering a rapidshare account but what if they just slow me down every time?? Seems like there isn't much point.

Mac addresses can be easily spoofed. This offers little security.

I think its about time that UCD put WPA encryption or some proxy filtering on the wireless. Im disgusted that people who live nearby the belfield campus get free access to a university connection only to piggyback the service to download torrents, porn and other ****. I like other people have to pay out of my own pocket for internet and its know where near as a fast as the UCD connection.

UCD does not require any MAC-address registration to use the WaveLAN network. In actual fact they've a pretty open network.

dude....you are not supposed to abuse the campus network like that anyway....

and goodjob of digging out a 1 yr old thread for your insecureness:pac:

p/s:no,they may register your MAC (media access control) address, but they will never register your Apple's mac laptop in their database :D
