Grip strenght is a great way for athletes to test CNS strength. If your central nervous system is run down it will seriously affect your grip strength. In the morning, as your body is just out of sleep and the CNS has slowed down over the course of the night this affects your grip.

Normally when you fall asleep the brain 'paralyses' your entire body so when you dream of running you're legs don't actually start running in the bed.
Some people notice this when they wake up suddenly only to find that they can't move at all, taking a couple of seconds before they get control of their body back (damn scary!).

Maybe it's a side-effect of this?

It's not paralyse, just the CNS slowing down while the brains runs up keep, for want of a better explanation! It's effectively "harder" to move, but no impossible. I've punched holes in the walls during dreams.

Unlikely, unless the cardboard is wet.

When punched, cardboard is likely to bend more so than tear unless it's fixings are very solid. If in a cardboard box and you punch it, the lowest corner on the opposite side is likely to lift, carrying the force and resulting in no damage to the box and possibly just a slight friction burn on the knuckles.

AFAIK that isn't a normal condition. You shouldn't be able to. And maybe the fact that not only did you act out in real life what you were dreaming but it was something connected with violence then you may have been going through a rough time in life?
