Really rude bus drivers.

Right well as a daily bus user I have noticed a lot of drivers to be decent enough, I get the odd one who doesn't bother saying "you're welcome" but besides that I have to say most are decent enough, but last night was a right shock to the system.

I was in town getting the 45 back to Bray at night and realized I'd left my wallet back in the bar, went through my pockets and found most of the bus fare I needed (needed 2 euro, had 1.70). So I put that in and tried to explain to the driver what had happened, most of the time and she was not happy, looked at me like I was dirt and told me to ask others for the rest.

Now I'm a bit of an intimidating guy in some ways, I have a good few piercings in my face and smelt of beer at this stage, so I asked a couple of people who ignored me (and to be honest I don't really blame them). So I'm getting off the bus and the driver stops me and starts giving me abuse. I'm mortified in frount of the others and I try to explain most of the time I end up having to put in too much anyway and explain why people at 12:00am on a bus try to ignore me asking for money due to my appearance in a feeble attempt to excuse myself while constantly saying sorry, she still won't have any of it so I try to make a light hearted recession joke, she then put on an extremely obvious fake laugh and mocked me openly in front of the others.

I got off and walked the rest home.

Now I know I am in the wrong here for not having my full fare, but at the same time I really don't think I should of been treated like that and would be half tempted to lodge a complaint. I was as polite as could be and was sober.

Any of you had a similar experience?

How can bus drivers be ignorant? They don't even say anything, ever. You get on put money in the little box thing and tell them the fare you're paying, they press a button and that's the last you see of them till you get off.

As for your story, it serves you right for trying to hop on the bus with out paying the full fare. You probably should have been fined. If I were the bus driver I'd have called the Gardaí and you'd have spent a night in the cells. Only scumbags try to dodge paying the fare the way you did.

It's one thing calling the Gardai on someone or issuing the fine, but the fact is I wasn't trying to do a runner even paid most of the fare, I explained my situation before I went off to get my seat. There is never an excuse to give the abuse she did, if anyone was the "scumbag" it was her.

You shouln't have hopped on, put the money in and then tried to explain yourself. You'd have been better off asking her if it was OK and then putting the money in.

However in saying that, there is never any excuse for being rude.

I was in town getting the 45 back to Bray at night

Only on boards.ie could town mean Dublin.
I read Bray as Wicklow so I thought it was a Bus Eireann bus in Wicklow you were getting until I read the €2 fare.
We don't all instantly assume town is Dublin, it could be anywhere

If you using Dublin Bus get a book of pre-paid tickets for next time.
The Travel 90 tickets are 10 for €17 so you'll actually be saving money (less than €2) plus you won't have to be sorting through change.

The 45 Is a notorious miserly bus. There was a time I was a 15 cent short the full fare, and a retiree kindly offered me the 15 cent, which I thanked them for and offered to the bus driver.

Now i did not ask for the 15 cent, it was kindly given. The bus driver then strangly drives on about 3 miles, then stops and calls the police.

The next day there were complaints on the national radio about the conduct of the bus driver.

They just need any excuse to show their true colours, in saying that imagine how many passengers don't say thank you or please or have a nice day. I wouldn't expect the bus driver to have to say your welcome to be considered a decent bus driver.

You setting the wrong precedence there.
In fact I had one bus driver look me funny and say to me: "a please and thank you would be apreciated" . I found that very condencending. I simply don't have to say please when describing my fare just the destination and fare. I wasn't using a harsh tone or looking to antagonise the driver, I just said my destination and fare as politly as one would.

So it explains alot that you would find drivers that don't say thank you not decent, when I am trying to just keep it simple and not to be expecting a thousand and one please's and thank you's.

As for wrinkled bus card's, there was this one driver that would not accept my bus card if it was wrinkled out of spite.

wow, that really sucks man... I mean I've seen drivers give out and stuff before but it was always pretty much required... That's disgraceful someone would be so horrible, after you being so polite! sounds to me like she was the one who had had a few cans, or just a crazy chip on the shoulder...

The 45 is crap anyway, meant to be 20min service and you're often left waiting an hour, would usually be better off walking. I would have lodged a complaint to be honest, bus reliability is crap enough as it is, getting abuse after being perfectly polite is just BS... No one's allowed abuse the bus driver, but neither is the bus driver allowed go on some mad power trip!

And town is the city centre, of dublin, definitely. thought everyone knew that... :-/

So did you get your wallet back or not? I think I'd be more worried over that

You should've just walked back to the bar and tried to get your wallet instead really. Bus drivers in Galway aren't too bad. One or two of them are a$$holes, some just don't give a damn, and you get those overly nice ones too.

What happened the money that the OP had put into the box, did the bus driver keep it? It fo, then he should probably have called the police and have had her charged with theft.

Short paying bus fare isn't actually a criminal offence and the police should get involved, the only time the driver should even bother the police is if they , or their passengers, are in real danger of getting attacked etc.

Dublin Bus steels more money than any one elese in the country, their system for collecting your change is as un-customer friendly as possible, you can only get change from their head office in O'Connell Street during office hours and upto one o'clock on a Saturday. They should be required to open branch offices throughout the city which stay open until a reasonable time and open until around 6 on Saturday and Sunday. The staff are also very unhelpful and rude when you go into to collect your change, and they also make up rules to prevent people from collecting change receipts, which no provate company would ever get away with

You should have had the money or tried to get it before handing out 1.70. Also, how do you normally pay more than what is required when the fare is 2e?

Do the drivers have access to the money?

    I hope you're joking, I really do.

The OP was hardly 'dodging paying his fare'. He was thirty cent short and tried to make it up by asking the other (rather unhelpful) passengers to give him the extra money. This is not the same as hopping on the bus without paying anything and hoping he gets away with it. So it's a bit unreasonable , not to mention laughable, to call him a scumbag and hope he would spend the night in the cells.

Some bus drivers aren't particularly friendly or helpful, others are lovely. It's a shame that the grumpy ones give the others a bad name.

I am sure it will only be a matter of time when all Dublin busses will be fitted with voice recorders to record any abuse being made to drivers. It could work both ways if you had a problem with an as*hole driver. There is currently up to 7 CCTV cameras fitted in all Dublin busses.

The usual rules and laws don't actually seem to apply to Dublin Bus drivers. I have seen drivers speeding, talking on their mobiles and smoking while driving.

tbh pay for wherever the 1.70 takes you and then stay on until your stop.

it's a secret though, nobody else knows about this trick! shh!

If I saw a any Bus driver chatting on a mobile phone while driving I would record it on my phone and post it on UTUBE. :)

Their speeding can be monitored by a tachograph, it would be examined if the bus was involved in an accident and speed was considered a factor.

Jeez dont shoot the guy for not specifically saying "I was in dublin city center". I automatically think that everyone would know where I mean by town. Its a bad habit :p

Here's how I picture the scene

It's midnight. The after pub crowd are on the bus, smoking upstairs, throwing up downstairs. My granny is driving the bus, at the end of her ten hour shift, when Vyvyan Basterd from the Young Ones 3622699_tml.jpg gets on, reeking of beer and can't pay his fare.

I think she should have called the Spanish Inquisition!

As has been said, you shouldn't have put your money in straight away. Popping the money in first and then explaining was cheeky and would have understandably pissed off the driver.

Are you personally responsible for money transactions in a customer facing job?
Right well as a daily bus user I have noticed a lot of drivers to be decent enough, I get the odd one who doesn't bother saying "you're welcome"

You expect a 'youre welcome' every time you thank someone? Surely you give thanks for something that someone has done. A good rule of thumb is give to give, never give to receive.

That's a good bit of advice - it works, and not only on bus drivers ;)

The OP should have been issued with a 1.70 ticket and allowed to board the bus.

It is the drivers job to drive the bus and collect money. It is the supervisors job to ensure that people are in possesion of the correct fare. As far as I know only Inspectors have the authority to remove someone from a bus due to the incorrect fare being paid.

It shouldn't really make any difference to the driver how much the OP paid as he had a valid ticket for the bus. The ticket is valid until the paid number of stages is exceeded and only then would there have been a problem, which would really not have been any of her concern for the reason mentioned above

By retaining the money and not issuing a change ticket as she removed the OP from the bus, she has technically stolen the money and this should be reported to the police

I fear that this reasoning, as sound as it is, will be lost on the masses of AH.
