    Hi Guys,

Are the Garda cameras that you see around town monitored by Gardai or civilians? Where is the control room based? I used to work as a camera operator and would be intrested in applying for a job if their manned by civilians. I couldn't find info anywhere.

Also are the cameras used much? Do they help in your job?

A, Manned 24/7 by trained Gardai.
B, Sorry thats for us to know
C, its not an area that will see civilian staff anytime soon. Its considered a sensitive, crime prevention area and civilian staff are intended for office, paperwork scenarios.
D, Yes they assist in a lot of investigations and spot a hell of a lot of public order and thefts early meaning the fight gets stopped early or the pickpocket gets nabbed at the scene. The recordings can and do get used after the event to piece things together. remember the guy on O'Connell Street who claimed he was assaulted and lost a finger? the whole 'assault' that didnt take place was on camera as was he which was how his finger was found.

    Cheers man, thanks for that.

Though I presume there is probably several regional control rooms rather than one looking after cameras nationwide?

Is this something that will be expanding like the CCTV they have in town centers in the UK?

I reckon they are a great deterrent to crime in the first place and I know I for one would feel a lot safer seeing a few more about the place.

Speaking of O Connell St and public order, were the cameras in place in 2006 during the 'love ulster' "riots"? Did they play a big part in identifing the yobs who were causing the trouble? I don't remember hearing anything about them.

The position is open to civilians in the Uk so thats probably your best bet if you fancy a career there. Look at some of the bigger forces for openings but there is also big competition for these jobs. I was gonna apply for one in Thames valley but the application form was too long or something, lol.

Cameras are located at Pearse St, O'Connell St, HQ and Harcourt St among others. This is public knowledge unless things have changed lately.

You could consider Dublin City Council who have a network of traffic cameras as an alternative?

Well going on the transmission range of one of them cameras I am guessing it would most likely be monitored in the HQ.

Transmission range? The cameras are wired.

When I worked in private security we could monitor cameras nationwide, and even some in the UK over an IP connection. Quality was perfect in the control room and the recording would be made locally onsite and by us for if it needed to be reviewed.

    What cameras?

The ones that we have been discussing....

I'm open to correction, but I'm almost sure those cameras are hardwired.

They are a mix of wired and wireless. Would take too long too explain and I dont understand it all myself but basically only certain 'hub' cameras are wired and a few others around it can work through it wirelessly.

Cool. So then "Transmission range" as described above dosen't really apply, as a 'hub' could be any distance from the central station.

However, I have seen these cameras in Limerick, Cork and Galway. The Garda website only mentions a CCTV control room in north Dublin city. But looking at the picture of the control room above I doubt it could support cameras nationwide. There must be several regional control rooms.

Would the presence of Microwave generators and associated other hi-mounted gubbins be in any way connected with the collection and forwarding of CCTV images in Dublin ?

I only ask as I have over the past few years noticed rather a lot of Microwave equipment appearing in the most unlikely of loactions ;)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Everything to do with monitoring and location of cameras. They have Garda logos on the side and are nothing to do with crime watch.

Dublin city council have their own traffic cameras.
