    Jesus H Christ!!
A 10 day course and now a bjj instructor?
I suppose if you spout enough bullsh1t about learning effectively in weekend courses you begin to believe it yourself.

I suppose it reveals what most here thought about these one day overpriced exploitative seminars to have been true all along...........

Ah Patrick Cumisky of Krav Maga Fame is teaching the classes.

i think this is the stripped down versio of gjj. you only learn a small number of techniques, and you can't grade anybody, I think i remember reading on bullshido that you have to bring in a gracie bb every 6mths or year. basically they were questioning whether this was bullshido or not.

Either way he's not a gjj instructor, but a gjj combatives instructor, which is probably around about blue belt level???

***edit*** ere's the thread for anybody who may be interested

I'd say there's a few blue belts who might have something to say about that.
The Gracies are even more shameless shills than I thought
"Fight research shows that the 34 Gracie Combatives™ techniques are responsible for more street fight victories than all other Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques combined."
At the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, a blue belt is awarded to anyone who perfects their understanding and execution of the Gracie Combatives techniques. Since you will be licensed to offer the complete Gracie Combatives course to your students, you will be authorized to promote them up to fourth degree white belt level. Up to two (2) times per year you can arrange to have a Gracie Academy Head Instructor visit your training center to evaluate all fourth degree white belt holders and award blue belts to those who qualify.

    Jesus wept!

Gracie Combatives: Although Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of over 600 individual techniques, studies of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in real fights have definitively proven that only 36 specific techniques were needed to achieve victory in 95% of all cases. The Gracie Combatives course was developed by Rorion Gracie and is based entirely on these 36 essential techniques and is consequently designed to prepare any individual for real combat in less time than any other course in history. The techniques of the Gracie Combatives course have been officially adopted by the U.S. Army, Navy Seals, F.B.I., Secret Service and countless local law enforcement agencies. The effectiveness of the techniques and the unparalelled structure of the curriculum have made Gracie Combatives the most popular and most important course offered at the Gracie Academy headquarters in Torrance, California.

I wonder what the 36 techniques are?

Although I've been sarcastic in this thread I'm not actually trying to knock PC or GJJ Combatives. Like I would suspect that the 36 techniques the participants get taught are presented very well with a lot of attention to the details. And I would presume they'll get shown how to do drills and I hope the importance of rolling/randori/sparring is also instilled in the trainee coaches. My issue really relates to the marketing, the price and the value of short but intensive courses.

The Gracie academy presents its self as the authority on GJJ/BJJ and that every other school is inferior and every other martial art is inferior. They seem to claim that all other BJJ schools are just sports jiujitsu clubs which don't accommodate the notion of reality or self defense or "the street". But a lot of BJJ schools are also MMA schools so the comments the British guy (sasha) makes about the difference trying to do jiujitsu against a guy trying to punch you in the face isn't all that significant. A lot of BJJ guys train under these conditions.

My next little gripe is with the price. I couldn't find out how much the courses cost but I'd speculate they're in the 2000-5000 dollar range. Of course, it's not my business to tell other people how much to charge and how much to pay for goods and services they receive but it's clear to me the Gracie Combatives course is equally about profit and spreading Gracie propaganda. Personally speaking, I much prefer to deal with people that supply a good or service because that's what they do, that's what they are, being a plumber/doctor/ice cream man was their vocation. This is as opposed to a guy that realized at the age of 30 he wasn't really as rich as he wanted to be he's investing in pyramid schemes and life coaching courses and martials arts courses and new gyms that use weird equipment so they can charge people foolish enough to spend the money massive prices as they prey on people's fears and doubts.

Finally I suppose it's simply the nature of intensive short courses themselves that I don't condone. Yes I'm sure after completing this course and you paid attention and you have good memory, retention and coaching skills you could remember exactly how you were shown the techniques and be able to repeat them faithfully in a demonstration to complete beginners. But having no actual experience in the alive environment of grappling/rolling/jiujitsu how will you be able to answer questions you haven't heard the Gracie already answer or give advice to your students in regard to individual game plans and strategy. AFter doing this course I can't see the coach/instructor being anything more than a real-life instructional DVD. Therefore the classes will simply consist of warm-up, teacher demonstrates a technique, students copy technique, and then warm done go home. This isn't alive training, this isn't effective and it isn't conductive to improvement. It's traditional martial arts training at it's worse.

So that's why I'm convinced the Gracie combatives course is simply a method of dumb people taxation and of the Gracie infiltration into the martial arts schools. I genuinely feel the Karates and the Kung Fus are at risk of extinction. Perhaps I'm just mad.

For those not bothered reading ^

    This course is basically profiteering.
THe techniques are perfectly valid but will only produce cardboard cut out coaches.
Tradional martial arts schools are at risk.

    Dear Mark
Thank you for your interest in our Gracie Jiu Jitsu training.
In the late 1920 Grand Master Helio Gracie created Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after he realised that he

anyone can do it , man or woman, regardless of their size or athletic capability
Although Gracie Jiu Jitsu consists of over 600 techniques, studies of fights conducted by members of
the Gracie Academy have shown that 36 techniques have been used more often and the greater success
than all the other techniques combined.
Soon after these studies were conducted the Gracie's' realised that the fastest way too effectively prepare
any new student to defend themselves against larger untrained opponent was to initially focus entirely
on teaching them the 36 essential techniques.

Are they blue belt tested after the intensive course?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

AFAIK, it's not a blue belt, but a Gracie Combatives blue belt? Basically, ebay belt.

It's saddening that it's all come down to the almighty buck. I've no problem with people doing a 10 day intensive course, but nothing beats time on the mat. I wouldn't like to be instructed by someone with 10 days of instruction.

"I've never taught jiu-jitsu, or never trained jiu-jitsu before."

10 days later, he's going to be instructing? Surely something is wrong here. I'm not knocking the fella, but I just don't feel that he could instruct Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to any sort of competency. There is one fella there who is a BJJ brown belt. Imagine the difference in instruction between him and that Irish lad. yet they are both supposed to be instructing the same thing?

Is that for real? I really feel sorry for anyone that would pay that much money for a private with someone whose only BJJ experiance is a 10 day course. And because the Gracie name is attached, there are plenty of people who would assume they are getting Rickson, Royler & Royce quality instruction.

This is a major cash grab for everyone involved
